I’ve been going back and forth with @jrnyc about this but I figured I would put forth the question to the main forum.

Going to Dominican Republic with the family and long story short I want to bring 8 tall boys with me. I will declare them because I don’t want us to get hassled at the airport. Me, or my family.

So, anyone who has gone through this process, how do you go about declaring your beer, will they hassle me regardless, is there any chance they will confiscate my cans because obviously I don’t want to lose 8 of my best beers for nothing.

I appreciate any responses, thank you.

A quick google seems to suggest you can bring in up to one liter of alcohol. Beyond that you’ll be charged import duty. Not sure if that’s accurate but a few sites seem to suggest it. No idea whether that duty is substantial or a pittance.

I see now that I can bring up to 2L of alcohol without declaring. So 8 cans would be double that. Anyone have experience with paying the duty on top.

I have paid the duty while traveling back from Mexico, Canada and overseas. This wasn't a problem in years past but In today's climate I simply wouldn't bother with the hassle of transporting any. A simpler albeit more expensive option would be to ship the beer to my destination.

They don't want your beer, they want your money. In my experience it is pretty pointless to declare anything. If you are going to a country that doesn't have a lot of money it is likely that they will search your bags and make you pay for something they have found anyway.

In regards to bringing beer and alcohol back to the US, I've never been hassled about it. They've always been more concerned with people smuggling drugs or bringing in produce. I usually get more attention to the spices I might bring than the beer or alcohol.

In any event, if they do charge you for bringing it back to the US it isn't much: https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/de...ements-for-importing-alcohol-for-personal-use

I’d be bringing the beer to my destination not from it. I hear my selection in DR isn’t the best and I’d like to be able to enjoy a few of my own while I’m there.

I would put the cans in my suitcase and not say a word. I sincerely doubt anyone is going to raise an eye.
Now if I was going to a Muslim country, I would be worried

Lol I didn’t even know this was a thing.

Brought eighteen 16oz cans to the Bahamas last year, didn’t declare anything, didn’t get any hassle.

I’m leaving for Jamaica on Tuesday, was planning on packing cans. Now I’ll follow this thread with interest, as I also don’t need my wife complaining about us getting stopped because of my “hobby”.

Funny thing...I’m fairly certain that if I put 4 cans in my bag and 4 cans in my wife’s then I should be good regardless.

I've taken beer to Aruba ..... 3 different trips, IIRC. Two Pseudo Sue bombers one trip, a 6 Surly pints the other two trips, I didn't declare anything, no issues at all on any of the trips.

    Good luck.

If it was me, I’d be fine with Presidente and other local beers. They have excellent rum so that would work for me. If you split the beers among bags, chances are you should be fine.

The alcohol duty free allowance is per person so you shouldn’t have an issue with those numbers.

I don’t mind Presidente one bit, but for 5 straight days? I don’t know about that. I’m having my kids too, and I’m not a big liquor drinker to begin with, so I’d rather not drink rum too much. I spent a lot of money on this trip and this is supposed to be like paradise so I’m looking at it like, well, why shouldn’t I drink at least a few of my favorite beers while I’m there.

I doubt there will be a problem entering Jamaica, but they are pretty stringent with searches when you leave. Even after you clear security, you will be subject to a random search when leaving- happened to me last year, shoes, wallet, phone case, everything. It all became clear to me when I realized that they were looking for drugs.

I am here now, we went through VIP line, they took customs form and didn't even look at it. I had declared $50 worth of beer. I watched the regular line, they just took the customs form, never looked at it, then people proceeded to put their bag through x-ray machine and that was it. Looked like maybe they did some spot checking of bags.

@guinness77 , you will be fine. Declare on form and you will likely skip right through. Worst case scenario is they pull your bag and maybe make you pay duty, that seems unlikely too given they never looked at custom form. Bring your beer, don't sweat it and enjoy your vacation!!

Sounds like he's gotten pretty good advice from jrnyc, but in any event, this is what I always do as well (except I bring wine). Have never had a problem.

I got a question (I hope it's ok that I ask here): I've been visiting the US a few times from Europe with bottles in my suitcase, never declared anything, but lately a canadian friend told me I should (I usually travel with 6 to 10 x 750ml bottles), or i could have troubles with customs even if I am under the limit. What's your take on that?

I just went to London from LAX last week and brought a bunch of bottle logic bottles and Monkish cans, didn't have to declare anything during the process on the way over. I brought back 14 bottles of Cantillon into the US and declared $250 worth of beer, I was sent to secondary inspection and had to wait in a long line, they X-ray my bag again and made me show them the beers, they asked if it was good beer and told me I was good to go, no problem, I can bring back as much beer as I wanted, I didn't have to pay any fees.
