Didn’t they do the ink with Suicide Squeeze? For some reason this sounds familiar.

Yep. The scales and eyes of the snake changed color when you refrigerated the cans.

Digging this modern times orderville I picked up in Portland. Very juicy with the bite I like on the back end. This could be a dangerous beer. Goes down very quickly.

Still my favorite "hazy" IPA from MT as well. I find that there can be some variation in the quality when purchased in can or bottle format (this is a beer that definitely does not age well). On tap however, the beer is just fabulous, and is worth visiting the brewpub in PDX just for that alone (IMHO).

Just had that on tap last night, it was definitely quite good.

Still like this beer, but liked it better before they hazed it up.

Had the pFriem Juicy IPA last night. One of the better ones I have had. nice amount of bitterness that let me know I was still drinking an IPA.

on the other hand, i had samples of a Crux "hazy IPA" and an Oakshire mango fluff yadda yadda hazy whatever. Both of those resembled some kind of non-bitter, flavorless orange juice.

I guess i'm nuking my original thesis that started this thread. there is certainly major quality differences within this style of beer. Ill contend that many taste nearly identical (Revision, im looking at you. They have 20 different hazy IPA releases and every one tastes the same) , but there are certainly outliers on both the good and bad end

All the fields of green taste like bubble gum to me, like the sixpoint stuff... trying to figure out why, thought it was the yeast, but juicy yeast is in the desdemona, so, a hop then...

Agreed. I've done a LOT of research on the subject since your OP, and if anything, I feel even more strongly that there are indeed major quality differences within the style. The best ones I really, really like (in fact, I've even enjoyed most of the Revision beers I've sampled), but then we have Claim 52 and the like. If I never sample another C52 hazy IPA I'll die a happy man.

I mean... I've really enjoyed Fluffy in the past. Why you no like the Claim 52? Certainly there are better Hazy IPAs in the market, but there are also worse.

There's definitely a big gulf between good Hazyish beers and the average ones. For instance I had the Fremont/Belmont Station Anniversary beer last night and it was fantastic whereas the Trap Door/Ex Novo collaboration I followed up with was clearly not at the same level for whatever reason. 100% agree on the Claim 52 beers, though....I really don't get the hype. Coldfire is significantly better even at the Hazies.

To me they all taste pretty similar (and Claim 52 makes a boatload of them), and none of them tend to stand out. To me, C52 is the epitome of a brewery churning out hazy IPA after hazy IPA just because they're the hot new thing, and they know a certain chunk of the customer base will buy their IPA's just because it's a hazy IPA.

I've been to several "hazy IPA" events, and invariably the ones made by C52 are my least favorite. They come across as one dimensional, overly fruity, and with minimal bitterness. I'm not sure what it is, but I tend not to like the mouthfeel on them as well.

When I think of C52 IPA's, I think of the old adage "if you throw enough of this crap at the wall, some of it is bound to stick." It seems like they make one NEIPA after another, thinking that at some point they'll luck into making something truly spectacular, that everyone thinks is the very best thing since sliced bread.

As I guess you can tell, it's really turned me off.

I get that to a certain extent. But I also, and correct me if I'm wrong here, remember Claim 52 Fluffy being one of the VERY FIRST hazy IPAs I had on tap. We got it at Belmont Station about a few months before Juice Jr. started coming out, and then we started getting hit with Three Magnets cans... and well, the rest is history. Now we're awash in Hazy IPAs from across the damn country.

It's been so long since I first had fluffy, it's hard for me to answer. I vaguely recall trying it at the Tap and Growler in Eugene when I was still living down there (so this would have been in 2015 or early 2016). It was recommended to me by the bartender, who was really gushing about it (told me it was the best C52 beer ever). I think there were a few local hazy IPA's on the market back then, but not many (as I vaguely recall wanting to compare fluffy to some of the others I'd had). They were definitely one of the first places to come out with one, and the beer got a lot of attention (comments about how it was as good or better than the stuff made by Hill Farmstead, Tree House, etc). That might have been part of the problem actually (this created unrealistic expectations on my part). Anyway, I didn't think it was bad, but I definitely didn't feel any need to order a second glass after the first glass. Also, in what I guess is something of a common theme with a lot of NE style IPA's, the beer tasted pretty good initially, but by the end of the glass I was tired of it, and didn't even want to get another glass.

Just my opinion and my two cents. Certainly I can see how others might find C52 hazy IPA's to be very good. They just don't appeal to me.

Liked the stuff I've had at fests. Was pouring near them at Belgianfest, and the stuff they had on that day was very nice.

I like Matchless a lot. He was the clearly the dude at 3 Mags who knew how to make good IPAs.

    I don’t particularly like theirs.

I've enjoyed what I've had from Matchless. I'll still pick up Little Juice Smoothie from 3 Mags, but in any other situation with a hankering for haze, I've enjoyed Matchless more. They did a collaboration Japanese rice lager with Chainline in Kirkland called "It's ake," which might have used sake rice, and that was one of my favorite lagers that I had last year, on top of being the best Japanese rice lager I've had. I hope it's at least a rotational/seasonal offering and not just a one-off.

Well, this particular weekend (April 20th-22nd) presented the opportunity for at least five fresh Hazy options in the PNW:

    1) Three Magnets
    2) Structures Brewing
    3) Urban Family
    4) Ruebens Brews
    5) Modern Times
    6)Possibly Holy Mountain (not sure)

I personally think Ruebens absolutely KILLED it with Crushed Squared! Weird, but reminded me of a dryer Riesling wine. Grabbed three 4-packs and wish I would have purchased an entire case.

Three magnets, Structures, and Urban Family were are really good. Not sure if Holy Mountains can release was a hazy beer.
