Any chance of getting a dislike option on reviews? Some of the reviews are so outrageously bad that I think it would be a good way to help someone determine a more accurate profile of a particular beer. For example, if someone writes a glowing over the top review that doesn’t match with what some others are saying but has a lot of dislikes on it as well, would help someone researching a beer decide whether or not to buy it.

I understand what your wanting but reviews are based on an individual's own views of the beer. If someone hates a beer that happens to be rated very well does that make their review bad or does it mean that style was not for them? I actually like the system as is because it allows for people to express their views, I really don't want a conformist system in place. That would make it worse because then your reviewing to fit in and avoid remarks if that makes sense.
I think what would be a lot better would be to remove reviews that are clearly fake or such. I am sure others can chime in on this, I totally get what your asking but I think we need to be careful on restrictions.

With all due respect, I don't think that's necessary. Palates are subjective. I don't form my opinion based on another person's. I find Kate Upton beautiful; some find her repulsive (believe it or not). To each their own. Also, the dislike button really doesn't promote any kind of harmony, so to speak, within BA. I'd like to think we can all respect each other. Cheers.

Totally agree. Everyone is going to have their own view on a beer, even if it is world class to some it may be swill to others. I just get wary when people want conformity, I think that actually hurts the rating system because people are not going to be 100% honest if they are worried about negative comments.

This would just be a work-around for folks who are trying to hype a particular beer for their own reasons. For example, a brewery could have their employees and fanboys purposely give a thumbs down to low reviews, to help give that beer a bump. Over time, the outlier reviews (both high and low scores) get averaged out.

I think the "report" link already serves the purpose of informing the administrators of people that are trying to game the system.

If you disagree with a review, you can always add a review with your own perspective.

I would rather see us focus on reviewing beers, rather than reviewing reviews.

Out of curiosity, you have a couple examples in mind?

I see and read plenty on Beer Advocate that I don't like . . . I don't push the like button.

I’m not crazy about this idea because, echoing what others are saying here, taste is subjective and individual palates are different. I also like that this site provides a safe forum where people can give their opinions about beer; putting dislikes might intimidate people from freely reviewing. Finally, if you want information for researching whether or not to buy a certain brew, start following people whose knowledge you respect and go by their reviews.

I actually thought there was a +1 / -1 feature for a short amount of time on reviews before it became the Like button and the -1 was removed.

Quick search tells me that was back in 2014 - I think it was removed by people trying to "game" the system to make certain reviews appear before others.

I was going to say the same thing - if the review is so outrageously bad you can report it and have a Mod look it over. But there is a difference between "that review was outrageously bad", and "I strongly disagree with that reviewers perceptions of the beer".

Yea, I'd be curious to see them too. @gvickery any examples?

I agree that a lot of reviews are total nonsense, but nothing is more subjective that our perception of flavor and taste. There is a difference between disagreeing with someone's opinion, and feeling like that review is fake or purposefully malicious. If it's the latter, report it.

There was a feature like that at one time. If I recall correctly, it was a thumbs up or down. Glad it’s gone. Everyone’s tastes are subjective and like me, most of us are not experts. You can usually weed out the fan boys or non useful ones pretty easily.

I review 'em as I see 'em and if my point score is above or below the average I don't get night sweats over it.

I'm confident the moderators will cull anything that's too far afield.

I don't read reviews as much as I read forums, and it never occurs to me to like them. Not sure if any of my 30,000 likes are from my 515 reviews. I never check my reviews for likes, and don't really notice which reviews by others are liked. I don't see the point in demoting them. They can be reported if really bad.

...a dislike button could devolve into something like this...

...It's the most hideous creation ever conceived. No one can laugh...or joke...

So, most kind curators, no dislike button. Please.

I like Todd's "no chance answer." As several people noted reviews are subjective. Also I think a dislike button will discourage newer reviewers. Who wants to review something if you are going to be dissed by a bunch of old farts? After you have read a few reviews you can tell who knows what they are talking about and who doesn't.
