I am part of a beer group in Northern California that is almost 3k people strong. Talking on Facebook from behind a screen creates distance from people. Last year a couple of guys filmed themselves while chugging a rare/seasonal beer, posted it to the group and challenge a few people to do the same. The act not only kept things light-hearted but it also bridged the distance that is created from talking on Facebook. It brought out community a lot closer and reestablished the fact that we are a community. I do agree, chugging takes from the craft beer philosophy, however, it did strenghthen our community.

LOL @ this fucking thread.

I was going to say that I was stunned it took 80+ posts before the Just Keep Tastin' channel on YouTube got a mention, but maybe I shouldn't be. It's probably no coincidence that the person who posted it also had, by far, the best take on the entire issue:

Ultimately, chugging beers in online videos is about the show. Call it trolling, call it attention seeking, call it whatever you want, but the point is to make a show of it. Case in point: some of these chugging groups stage miniature tournaments where, in addition to chugging a beer quickly, people are encouraged to ham up their video with theatrics and costumes and all sorts of craziness to make it entertaining. That's ultimately the point.

Do some people chug because they think it give them status? Probably. Do some people chug to get drunk quickly? I'm sure they do. Do some people chug to troll people who are so perplexed/upset by chugging videos? Absolutely.

But in my experience, most people chug because they are fucking around and having fun with beer. I love the nuance and subtlety and taste of craft beer just as much as the next guy, but there are definitely times when it seems like we take the hobby too seriously. Chugging craft beer is a minor rebellion against that.

Exactly. And this is where the "taking it too seriously" bit comes in. We have a 4-page thread dedicated to decrying what other people do with their beer, right down to a discussion on when chugging is "acceptable" or not. From what I gather...
    • chugging out of a functional need to quickly finish your beer = approved
    • chugging because you are super thirsty = approved
    • chugging because you are goofing off = not approved
Hell, some people are so upset by it that they've cool with making harsh judgments about those who participate, without ever having met them.

This thread is pure sadness. Why do you all care anything about what other people choose to do with their own beer? If you don't like chug videos, block the people who post them on social media. This is CRAFT BEER. Try not to take life so seriously. Can you only chug macros? Is that ok? But craft beer has to be slowly sipped and debated meticulously between 20 people?

I look at chugging as an art. I probably only post to social media about 10-15% of the videos/beers that I chug. I chug based on speed and quantity. I also like to have fun and talk throughout the video. It's fun...like beer should be. I may buy a 4 or 6 pack to get the tick....but if its not my jam, it's getting chugged.

Try it before you knock it. Go grab your phone and chug a craft beer. Send it to a friend and see what they say.

Yes, it's truly pathetic. As if any of us really need approval from neckbeards, mules, trustees, proxies and other stereotypical beer-scene shitlords about how we're supposed to "properly" enjoy beer. Get fucked, I say. I'm not a chugger but I might just go to a release and shotgun a BBA stout just to see the looks of disapproval on all of their faces

I have no problem with chuggers, I just don't understand it. It doesn't quench your thirst (it actually dehydrates). The carbonation would make me vomit(it can't be that enjoyable) It's not gonna make "neck beards and beer-scene shitlords" mad, as most non chuggers wouldn't waste their time watching such videos. Again, I'm not hating. In fact, I appreciate anyone buying good beer and supporting the economy. I just don't get the satisfaction in doing such. (Other than approval from other chuggers I guess)

My guess is, to not take beer snobbery too seriously. Anyone I've ever seen do this has an appreciation for quality beer 99% of the time. They just have chosen to be silly and have a bit of fun, with that other 1% of the time. Typically, "bros" wouldn't even know what type of beer to pour to drop some jaws.

Now where did I put that Heady Topper? Papa's done with work and could use something to shotgun. I kid, chugging great beers is not for me. But, I'm still going to likely get a kick out of anyone who throws away their money like that.

I see you weren't around for it, but this thread reminds me of the thread here when folks tried to deny that getting high was the main motivation for drinking beer.

I love watching chuggers, I have no judgementalism about it, if it feels good do it has been my motto since before most of these chuggers were born.

But come on, really? None of you all chuggers do it cause it gets you wasted quicker? Right, you all do it because of your desire to flout social norms, lol.

Me, I just hope you ate some colorful shit before you chug so if you barf it will be even more entertaining to watch..

Lmao you guys! If it’s my beer and I want to chug it, I’ll chug it.. I chug alone or around people, with or without video, doesn’t matter, it’s something fun that I like to do.. some people sky dive for fun and I don’t see how that could be fun at all! Lol

Perhaps we should have an online tasting, themed "Slam that Cult Beer". Nothing under 12oz.

In the **** industry, sometimes it can take the edge off of the entire crew on set. I usually give the whole lighting crew a couple cans of suds pre-scene so they're more relaxed. When ropes are flying sometimes you need a little sauce.

I am a Chugger. I chug high end craft beer. I belong to a chugging group and we do some absolutely outrageous and fun stuff through chugging. As far as chugging BECAUSE it gets you drunk faster, definitely sometimes true, but not always true. It is however, always a result of the chugging. If I go to an all you can eat Ahmish smorgasbord and pig out for two hours it's because the Ahmish are fantastic cooks and the food is delicious, getting fat is a result but not the reason I went.
