That's the way I've done it for years, tip first, and not only does it work it's a dandy way to start off a relationship with the server and staff.

Genuine question. But how does that work? Like I walk in, sit down at the bar, and what - just slap down 20% of what I’m anticipating I’m going to spend? Or just the tip for the first drink I plan on ordering? And do you ever have to explain what you’re doing or why you’re doing it? Or they always get it.

@cavedave - your friend - is he NYC based? Just thinking about bars I go to in NYC, I just think this could open up lots of awkward conversations where the intent becomes lost

Plus not to mention - more and more transactions are cashless - so that complicates this further

Same here and it gets confusing. When I was younger I was taught 15% -20% at restaurants. Then I was told 1 dollar per drink at the bar. If I open a tab its probably going to be a 20% tip. If I'm only buying a couple drinks its 1-2 dollars. Yesterday for instance the local tap house got some cans in from a brewery and after work I picked up a few 4 packs. I didnt tip because they didnt do anything but swipe my card.

Most sours are over-hyped, over-priced, cheaply made and border-line undrinkable. Oh yeah, and a lot of them taste very similar.

I am sorry to say Jan passed away two years ago. He was a neighbor, and customer at the recycle center I managed, and always tipped me first, and explained why. Don't actually do it myself, I have to admit, but it makes more sense than tipping after if your goal is to motivate great service. But really neither thing makes sense when compared with the so much better idea of tips not being a mandatory thing for some situations.

Every time I go to a brewery/bar I give them my debit card, they open a tab, I get the bill back, then I tip based on the total bill.

    I usually tip 20%

The only scenario that I've encountered this is when you have a packed bar and you're paying with cash. I wouldn't even call it tipping first. Rather, pay as you go and provide a generous tip on the first round. Even at that point, you're likely not tipping for premium service, you're paying for above average service compared to 30 other people waiting for drinks...

As an outsider I never cease to be amused by the tipping arguments.I cannot see how a tip in a place where tipping is the norm can get you better service because all the other customers are tipping too,
I expect and get served promptly and in turn, clean glassware (though a fresh glass on request is a legal requirement) and full measure. Any excessive head and a top up is given. All this for the posted price without any tip.

The other part of the problem is the arrogant employees who want tips because they don't pay tax on them. The law SAYS that they're supposed to pay tax on them, but if you give them cash, a lot of them don't report it.

Any time I hear somebody bragging about how much they make in tips and don't pay taxes, I want to smash them in the mouth. Sure, I hate paying taxes too, but if I don't have any choice in the matter, neither should they!

Tipping in the US is easy...be generous & don't worry to much about it. You can't take it with you anyways...

Stuff must be different where you are. Out here, where we don't have a state income tax, but stupid high sales taxes, employers are required to post what they think their employees make in tips. So, yeah, ones server might pay taxes on money that they never received.

Sure, the IRS might look the other way, a bit, if the rest of ones numbers make sense (and, a lot of servers only work the service industry because the hours give the time to either work a different job, or work on what their passion is, but having a bunch of W2's or 1090's is at least a yellow flag, if not a red.) There are so many layers in this.......

Please, tell me more about arrogance.

Uh, the government taxes you what they think you make in tips, regardless of your actual earnings. If you have a great night you can pocket some without paying, but if you have a shit night it goes the other way.

I don't believe you routinely hear people bragging about this anymore than I believe people who post about the profoundly preachy thing their toddler said to them the other day that just happens to dovetail perfectly with their political opinions.

Agreed. Kinslahger in the suburbs of Chicago also has a strict no-tipping policy. Imagine that, paying a living wage to your employees...

Lotta beer drinkers have untrimmed facial hair. I hear them use the word beard. My controversial opinion for all you folks is if you can't braid it, it ain't a beard. It is untrimmed facial hair. A beard becomes a beard when it's long enough to braid.

To take this further, there is no Best Beer in the World. There is the one you enjoy the most but who knows what is out there that you might like even more?
Also tastes change. I find more and more that I enjoy the good old fashioned milds and bitters more than the attempts by brewers to reinvent the wheel.
