Drinking a 2018 right now. ABV is hidden incredibly well. Great mouthfeel, maybe slightly thicker this year? Not too sweet by any means. Coconut for days. Loving this more than I remember. Dare I say better than the last couple batches. Good job Perrin!

I’m glad they’ve made it a bit better. Maybe I’ll grab a bottle later this year when it hits stores.:stuck_out_tongue:

It tastes better this year because it's more rare. It's science.

Hey now there are plenty good people in detroit. Sports teams and breweries:stuck_out_tongue: but seriously give detroiters a break. They can't help the fact they drive like assholes. Still got love for detroit though.

I mean. Eminem lives there, but...he's a god, so that's not really fair.

Then you got the guy from Hard Core Pawn, Les. He's a real piece of shit. Sooo...I dunno. I kind of feel like I should stand by my statement..

I have been a Perrin frequent for years. I was told the ex sales head for Perrin pushed to make the largest amount not only for Michigan but other territories as well in 2017 against the production manager wants= shelf turds. He left and once again like 2015 and 2016 a limited amount was made so no distribution. They want it to be harder to get. Some cases were saved for special pub releases and brewery events. The myths tied with this are crazy, go to the pub make friends with the good servers and get real answers. It is like the Malted Milk Ball myth, Perrin doesn't own the orinigal recipe?! The brewer that made it at perrin tried making it at his other two places of employment and Perrin was thinking about a cease and desist. At the release I heard an employee say they almost posted the recipe of MMB on the wall to show everyone they still had and owned the orinigal recipe.

Brewers know all too well that beer drinkers tastes change dramatically over time. The more time between batches/releases, the more publicity the next batch will get. It is too easy for a brewery to be nothing more than noise these days and they desperately need occasional beers like MMB to renew interest in their brewery. It might be a real eye opener to hear the uncensored account of the product managers strategy for MMB and NR over the last couple years.

You can’t trademark/patent a recipe though. That’s one of the dumber things I’ve heard.

You can trademark the name though.

I'm no saying that the production of a good is the same thing as a recipe, even if you follow a "recipe" to get the final product in both cases. That said, isn't it the case that a recipe is in fact part of the trademark when you are talking about an actual item. That is, you can't just reverse engineer it, figure out how it was made and then reproduce it - you have to find a way to make the exact same item without the same recipe?

Or am I just out of bounds here?

The only problem with that theory is that a spokesperson came out and said they made the same amount as last year.

The lawyers around here will probably correct me, but my understanding is that trademarks primarily protect branding and identification of a product (names, logos, symbols). A recipe would be more like a trade secret. Whether Perrin is able to prevent their former brewer from making MMB likely depends on what was specified in that person's employment contract and if any sort of non-disclosure agreement was in place.

Speaking of Malt Milkball Porter, that stuff they bottled last year wasn't even close to what they had in tap when they first started selling it.

Regardless, just wait until we see this in a gift set at Meijer next November.

Yeah, this whole "protect the brand" initiative makes a hell of a lot more sense with the understanding that they didn't make as much for 2018 as they did for 2017, in spite of having said that they did.

Also, on the topic of legal protections for recipes... there really aren't any. In certain cases, you could patent a recipe, but only if it involved some kind of new technique or approach that hadn't been used before. Patents cover inventions and recipes usually involve little more than adjusting ingredient ratios and minor details about the process of completing the recipe. Now if Perrin's recipe somehow involved a special, novel way of infusing the pastry ingredients into their stout, then they might have a chance.

Perrin would be better off at this point saying they don't have the original recipe to MMB because last years version was a steaming pile of monkey shit.

And if No Rules doesn't make it to stores, oh fucking well, maybe a few years off from that beer will make me like it again.
