Hi all. Not sure if this is the right forum for this. Dropped off a six bottle styrofoam shipper last night at a FedEx I frequent often that is open 24 hours.

Before I got there I noticed how loud the liquid was inside. Purchased a box of skittles and a pack of oatmeal to throw in. When I got there I asked the guy I usually interact with for shipping tape because I forgot to throw something in the box. Usually he just gives it to me. This time he said he could tape it himself. I was able to still throw the box of skittles in there, but he saw the outside of styrofoam.

Knows me as the hot sauce guy because I always say that's what I'm shipping. But overall, it felt like an awkward experience, especially with how cautious everyone is being after the Austin incident.

Now I'm looking at tracking the next morning and seeing a shipment exception notification. Any reason for concern? Could I hold it there and go pick it up?

I had an "exception" happen to me a year ago shipping a box to WI from SC. The Fedex website said "exception-alcohol. return to sender" Turns out one of the cans I shipped somehow opened and spewed everywhere causing the box to leak, even with the bag around it.

I didn't do anything, and a few days later my cans and bottles showed up at my door in a new box and new packaging all put in a trash bag inside the box. I simply printed a new label and stuck it on that box and away it went successfully.

Chances are your box will come back to you. I have heard of some cases where they take the box and it disappears and you are SOL.

I've had much better and cheaper service with UPS lately, but your mileage may vary.

Appreciate the response. It was just an awkward experience, but I called FedEx customer service and the representative said that I'm most likely getting this notification because I missed the pick-up time for ground shipping last night. Hoping it updated by EOD today or I'll really start to worry.

It'll work itself out, don't worry.

Worst case scenario is you have to pay for shipping them again if it does come back to you.

This happened to a trade partner of mine literally about 1 month ago. It was actually immediately following his first box to me breaking. I didn't have the heart to tell him that there was an exception because I was 99% sure that was the issue. That was a Saturday though, so I had to wait until Monday to get an update since it wouldn't ship till Monday. Late Monday night the exception went away when everything started moving and updated.

This probably. I get these frequently and it's always this. Used to freak me out. Not so much anymore. Either way, good luck.

When I've gotten a FedEx exception it has meant a slight glitch in transport and hasn't been a problem, yet.

Worst case scenario would be that they completely trash the box, due to alcohol, and he needs to buy the beer AND pay shipping again.

All good! Package arrived on Friday with everything safe.

Thanks for all your advice. It's best to remain calm and wait for updates. I just never got a shipping exception right off the bat with FedEx.

IF there was a problem with the package before it ever left - even if something was leaking, I feel like they would have an obligation to notify sender and give it back. In-transit is one thing, but before being shipped? That's one of the reasons I did not get worried with my experience above.

Course, just because it's logical doesn't mean it will happen.

hmmm...I see there's a Shipment Exception on my package now.

Hopefully it's nothing and it finds it way to Texas ok.

Nevermind, I saw this in the Shipping History:

Package received after final location pickup has occurred. Scheduled for pickup next business day.

My heart skipped a beat for a second, but looks like it's nothing to be concerned about.

Just a tad annoying. It's been two days now, and nothing on the tracking has changed. It still says Shipment Exception, with the last Travel History as 4/23: Dropped off a FedEx OnSite. I would hope the package is enroute by now, rather that still sitting at the place I dropped it off at 2 days ago.

Meanwhile I got my package today (he shipped through UPS).

For whatever reason, you seem to be one of the few that has had better experience with UPS.

That said, both given personal experience and given those that I have read - if you drop your package off after the truck has already left for the day - and get that exception - it seems to update slow for some reason. Could not tell you why, but has happened twice to me (only once did I see the exception, though). If package is dropped off before that time, never really ever have an issue.

This very same thing happened to me on Sunday. I dropped off at 3pm - exception notification received that evening.

Package is scheduled for delivery today. I'm not worried about it. In your situation, it should be fine as well.

Bumping this thread: I got a notice Wednesday about a shipping exception.
    "Unable to deliver--Damaged package"
    Any advice?

Call the warehouse that it is at IMMEDIATELY, and speak to the manager. Don't give up until you do. Badger them as much as you have to. Make the manager locate your package and tell you exactly what is wrong. If they say the package broke and it contained alcohol, and that's against their policy, play dumb and say that you did not know, and that you would like them to ship it back. If they say they can't, harass them about destroying your property, and that they can't do that.

Basically, be a jerk if you have to. From all the posts I have read, this is the only way you'll get anywhere IF they are giving you the run around. Some people have had positive experiences, where they apologize immensely and state they are returning to sender.

Also, the shipper is the person that needs to call them.
