Afternoon BAs just got back took the wife to pick up a new anniversary ring for putting up with me for 17 years and now I need a new beer. This one I received as part of the latest Can Can BIF from @jpatag66 it is a single hop Nelson IPA brewed by Thorn brewing in San Diego California clocking in at 7%. Let me begin by saying I am a big hazy juicy IPA fan but sometimes it is great to have a nice clean refreshing crystal clear golden hoppy IPA and this is it. This thing is clean beautiful and very flavorful. Thanks Jason for this wonderful beer and all the great things you sent!!!

Appearance 4.25 - Pours crystal clear golden color with thick white cap that settles to a thin layer. Spotty lacing around the glass.

Aroma 4 - Great Nelson hop aroma pine, grapefruit, citrus peel so clean. Light lemon.

Taste 4.25 - Taste is wonderful, crisp clean nice citrus peel and pine

Feel 4 - Medium bodied light slightly dry finish.

Overall 4.17 - Super solid single hop IPA

You can see @jpatag66 damage below.

Thanks guys! Didn't end up going out as it was spitting rain all day so far. and now that I hafta use both DEET and permethrin (due to Lyme spectrum diseases) on my woods-wear, getting soaked is a bad idea. Supposed to be great weather all week so my daylight hours are gonna be out in the woods for sure.

And yeah, Chris, my friends Jamie Bishop and Larry Stock are the brewers at Mill House. They used to hit every Doom Saloon back in the day too, as well as being founding members, with me and six others, of Mohonk Home Brewers Association. They are doing quite well, glad to say, and a visit to their brewpub is a treat that shouldn't be missed by anyone in the area. Their Kolsch is still a fave of mine, as well as Velvet Panda, which I knew as Jamie and Larry's Stout back in the day (when it beat out my stout in the club competition haha.)

NBS! I just got back from a week in California. Missed y'all last week but I was hiking in beautiful Yosemite. Beer was not a focus of the trip but I got to try more than a few new CA beers while there. Now back and returning to where I left off with my box from @strohme2

    A: Hazy, orange/light brown, one-finger head
S: Tons of grapefruit, pineapple, orange, mango, hints of grass, pine, earth - super aromatic
T: Surprisingly sweet. Tropical fruit, citrus, melon, with sweet malts towards the finish (I totally get the barleywine reference below)
M: Full-bodied, sweet, only a hint of alcohol
O: A delicious neipa, the aromas are its best part. I'd score it higher if less sweet but still worth seeking out
    Overall 4.27 rDev -3.8%

Cheers! The lawn grew enough while I was gone it's time to fire up the mower for the first time in 2018.

Today is the day I opened @2beerdogs blind beer offering from our NBS BIF 007. The only thing I can tell you is that it is a traditional WTHIT style ( What The Hell Is This). [IMG]

    BLIND REVIEW
I poured into a Bruery tulip that Derek also provided. I did this based on the size of the bottle, the neck shape and the larger looking bottle cap that The Bruery tends to use.
Btw, I did not cheat with the cap, kept it concealed with tape. I used Mrs. Strohme2 senses as well FYI.

First pour- Very dark brown, large tan head. Specks of amber if I hold the glass up to light. Large 2 finger head of tan foam. Leaves some decent lacing on the glass.

Next, the nose. Sponge cake, chocolate, vanilla. Roast?

First sip neither of us could place. We both knew it was something delicious but nothing we could pinpoint. After many, many first sips I’m getting something creamy and nutty(?). Some raisins or figs, molasses. Faint dusty chocolate, ash, coffee. Faint flavors of bourbon and coconut from wood?

I’ve been nursing this one. Floral rather than clove honey? Faint soft citrus?

Medium bodied, smooth (especially at warmer temps), drying finish.

Initial thought was a bourbon barrel aged imperial stout or imperial porter. Grey Monday maybe? I don’t get a big hazelnut punch I would expect with that beer. I don’t know enough about The Bruery’s beers to really make an accurate guess. I will say I’m (we) are enjoying it and trying to pick out different flavors that would identify this beer.

    The REVEAL!
Imperial Stout with Orange Zest, Cacao Nibs and Vanilla Beans. Quite pleased. The orange zest is there and complements rather than overpowers the beer. I think the spongecake/creamy I was getting was the vanilla.
Derek, this was a fun beer to blindly review!

Coffenade IPA. Much like a throat lozenge. Lingering flavors of coffee and lemon wedge. Like Ricola with coffee. Very weird. 3.62 out of 5.

Greetings, fellow NBSers and thanks to @cjgiant for getting us underway this a.m.

About 70° and clear this late morning. Supposed to reach 82° by late afternoon.

Was going to open a stout from @beerloserLI this a.m., but I dropped it, and while no lasting damage was done to it, I had to have another beer from his NBS BIF box pinch hit. Why the baseball language? Take a look at the can:

Really nice hazy pale ale. Very drinkable stuff, quite crisp too. The name combined with the can's appearance made me think of A-Rod in a highly ironic way, but I'd still happily hit this again, especially outdoors on a warm day. Thanks, Brian!

    L - 2-finger hazelnut head atop a black body.

S - smoke, firewood, meat. Love it!

T - liquid smoke, smoked meats, smoked malt. Hot middle - peppers burn on every sip. Low sweetness, low bitterness, no booziness.

    F - medium-full body and medium carb.

O - Smoky pepper beers are kinda my thing. This is great. Not a guzzler, but greatly enjoying sipping it.

New Pale Lager Sunday (Week 689)
Greetings fellow NBSers from on the ridge in Mid Hud Val, NY. Been spitting rain all day, so ended up watching some Zatoichi re-runs waiting for the sun to come out, and working on a song that doesn't yet have a tune, for which I was asked to write lyrics to memorialize the passing of a local hero. Was gonna pick up some Narragansett Lager on recommend of @TongoRad , but instead got this delicious local lager from Industrial Arts when I saw it on shelf. Summer Landscape
    [IMG]
Wonderful aroma full of crisp grain, lemony tart, light doughy yeast notes, floral perfume, and slightest spicy bitter.

Wow it is just like the bouquet, a clean and perfectly balanced version that is spectacularly delicious.

Soft on palate, med. carb., very clean and refreshing, with the perfect finish to cap it and set stage for following sips.

Hard to give descriptions that would do justice to how delicious, satisfying, and refreshing this beer is. Highest recommendation.

Hope you also have a Great American Beer in your glass. Cheers!

This weeks NBS comes from Trap Rock a Brewery Restaurant in North NJ. It's name says it all Mosaic Pale Ale. This is a 5.2 5ABV West Coast style Pale Ale. Mosaic is the only hop used.It pours a pale straw color with a thick white head. The aroma is tangerine, Papaya and grass. The taste is about the same. The mouthfeel is light and the finish is clean and dry. A very good easy drinking Pale Ale. Well done.
At the brewery Mosaic Pale Ale is being served on a regular tap and on a hand pump. Drinking them side by side is both fun and interesting. The hand pump is not cast conditioned but it is served warmer and has much less carbonation and a thinner head. It's nice but I preferred the regular tap.

Ok, next beer today comes from a brewery whose regular releases are hit and miss for me (their Pumpkin Ale being the standard bearer in that style, however), while I have enjoyed every Ibex series beer I've had from them (which is only 3). I'm not sure if this is from a different series, but there was another "cocktail" beer next to this one - it is listed under their Cellar Series on the Schlafly website, probably due to the use of bourbon barrel chips in the process of making Kentucky Mule. Seemed not-quite-but-almost appropriate on Kentucky Derby weekend.

The bottle is promising me an "exotic and comforting" beverage with "sweet and spice" and other "rambunctious flavors." Not sure what rambunction tastes like, so let's find out...

First off, it was hard with the cold beer and humid outdoors to get a shot of the clarity on this light orange amber beer (lower left image is best I could do), though I will note a refill was actually fairly hazy. The head has the yellowing color of the teeth of a person who smoked for quite a few years but has started using whitening toothpaste. Volume in the picture shows the difference between an aggressive and a more safe pour.

Nose is spot on for the non-spirit additions. The ginger isn't sharp or pungent, and a ginger ale impression is unavoidable. The lime is more aggressive, but doesn't have any sharpness, either. The bourbon wood chips might be the smoothing agent, as the ever so light charred honey/vanilla sweetness they bring is quite enticing.

The feel is as smooth as the nose is well blended. An almost flat opening, a hidden tingle of carbonation grows slightly as some of the bite of the ingredients comes on. A near clean, even so lightly toasted malt pauses longer than expected, almost making me wonder how none of the scents transferred to the taste.

I start to feel the ginger just before tasting its rooty flavors. The lime follows in lock step right behind it, so close, it's like those old cartoons where the following character's each leg movement and step is so perfectly mimicked, the lead guy can't even turn around and catch his pursuer - they are like one. So, we're at lightly malty ginger lime - with almost wooden base that I can't say is more the non-spicy side of the ginger flesh or the barrel chips. The bourbon comes next, under this wooden shroud. It's accent is lightly spicy - without alcohol burn. It ends up cleaning out the lime, and allowing the ginger bite to gain the late taste with a light lingering aspect.

A very well constructed beer, unlike my first one, in the sense that the flavors that one would expect from the ingredients are all present, and meld well together. The wooden note and more balanced overall sweetness level (the hops aren't distinctly noted by me) means this still seems to have a "beer" impression to it versus a "malt beverage." I'm still deciding if they generated this well-crafted beer for my palate, though. I'll probably end up at 3.75 in that category.

    Perennial - Saison de Lis

Alright, I’m gonna stretch the rules of NBS, but hopefully not to the point of breaking. I had this beer once before, but in a 750 package as opposed to a 16oz can. I previously featured it as part of my 750 saison thread (if anyone remembers that one), and I immediately knew that I was shortchanging it with my attention given the brevity of my review. I just featured two 16oz saisons in this NBS thread, and with the discussion of “favorite canned saison,” it felt wrong to not open this as well. Consider it a post of comparison to the other two new beers.

This beer is brewed with chamomile flowers. It’s a pale gold and has a slight haze. Its big head is the sort of thing that people like to look for in a saison. It seems far more delicate and nuanced than the other two beers. I’m reminded about how I shortchanged it earlier. If you don’t pay careful attention to it, it’s easy to just drink it down before thinking too much about it (which definitely isn’t a bad thing). This is a subtle beer. There’s a little corn sweetness, some lemon, and a faint grassy character. This is gentle like the chamomile flower that’s used to brew it (but good chamomile tea can have more of a flavor punch than this). I’m actually getting that chamomile tea flavor, but I’m not bright enough to have picked up on this without the cue from the brewer. An admirable and bold beer that’s satisfied with only whispering.

I'm gonna rank the 3 canned saisons according to my enjoyment of them:
    1) Night Shift Matisse
    2) Perennial Saison de Lis
    3) Mill House Peas and Pods

While I really liked the Perennial beer, having these three together really reinforced my high opinion of Matisse.

It's already been a good day of drinking, but I'll be back with more later.

[IMG] Poured slowly into a 16 oz IPA glass canned on 3/16/18 it looks like. Pours a slightly cloudy yellow with a 2 plus finger sticky white head that leaves thin wisps of lace as it slowly settles into a layer of bubbles. 4

Smell is tangerine, clove, apricot, pine, hard candy, and grapefruit rind. 4

Taste follows spicy clove, tangerine, apricot, pine resin, and ripe grapefruit. 4

Mouthfeel is good size, plenty of life, maybe a tad dry, and at 8.5% ABV pretty easy drinking. 4

Overall this is a very nice brew, along the lines of Raging Bitch. I would definetly drink this again. Thanks @jzeilinger for this one. 4

Did you find that separately, or is that out of the Blend Like A Brewer 12pk? I haven't seen it separately. I tried the included recipes, but also sampled them alone, & do like that one.
If you follow the recipes (I measured :grin:) , it leaves a little leftover. My favorite combo was actually the mix of 3 leftover bits : Cellar Blender, 1554, & Abbey (dubbel) . :sunglasses:

..above average body with very low carbonation
..aroma is leather, tobacco, and alcohol. Can't pick up too much as the alcohol diminates
..taste is similar but not as heavy on the alcohol.

Ha! Thanks. Though I might need points off for the poor description of what is so vividly obvious in my mind of the old school cartoon bit but I can't find anything online. Closest I can find quickly is the classic 1929 Skeleton Dance (if you imagine the skeletons facing the same direction and closer together). Can't win 'em all, I guess
