Refresh my memory, so I can forget to visit it again this Fall? :stuck_out_tongue:

Most has been mentioned, just thought I'd throw this in the mix ... on some German FB craft beer threads many hold Giesinger Bräu as one of the better craft beer brewers in Munich. I know nothing about them, have never been but there seems to be a positive online consensus.

I understand that you're pressed for time but Tilmans opened a new taproom about 2 km south of the old town called Frisches Bier. It looks like they have 14 taps with some guest taps available. Tilmans specializes in modern takes on traditional Bavarian styles and I've enjoyed their offerings. I have yet to check this place out but it might be worth a stop if you want some variety.

I visited last Summer and felt their beers were fantastic. There was a period where their reputation was a little "meh," but I think that has mostly passed. I have a couple discerning friends (including an award-winning pro brewer) who recently stopped in and left impressed.
I think the key is that they're doing both traditional and craft styles well. That isn't easy, and a lot of the smaller German craft places can't really nail one or the other. They had a weissbier that was "Munich good" on the same menu as barleywine and a lemondrop tripel. You just don't see that kind of thing much.

It's also super easy to reach, which is also nice. Just take the U-bahn to Silberhornstrasse and it's only a 5-minute walk.

This thread was helpful as I will be in Munich May 12-15. @chrisjws shoot me a message if you feel like grabbing a drink. I'm visiting from Chicago and I'll be riding solo for this leg of my trip

    Half day recap:

    Got in at 3:30pm
Hit Augustiner Klosterwirt when I meant to hit Zum Augustiner and had the waiter rudely inform me they were not the same. So is the way it works here essentially a franchise for beer?
Went to Hofbrau Haus and had two liters as I soaked in the pure awesomeness of that place. I mean, like, holy shit.
Went across the way to Ayinger where I had the horseradish soup and it was like Jesus came into my life. I had breaded steak there (forget the german way of saying it) and the Jahrhundert and the lager on cask, of which I got the first pour. By the time I left the cask was out.
Hit Der Pschorr as I headed back to my hotel for a quick cask Helles

Made good time in a half day. Assuming I wake up tomorrow gonna hit a lot more.

Nice report, and thanks for posting. If you didn't sleep much on the plane, I hope you have a good alarm as well as a back-up.

I am surprised the Augustiner Braustuben isn't more highly recommended. It by far had the most local feel and can even get a bit rowdy on the weekends! I found myself frequenting that bierhall the most often when I spent a summer in Munich. I'll be back in Munich for a few days mid-June and cannot wait to enjoy that great city again

Walked for a lonnnng time into the Englisch Garten, past the lake. Grabbed a Paulaner Hell at the garten nearby.
Hit Andescher am Dom on my way back to the hotel for another Helles.
Dinner, a Dunkel and a Bock at the Augustiner Bierhalle

Well done. Plus, you have made a large group of grown men very envious.
