I have a King Julius in the fridge. Couldn't wait to crack it tonight. About to open it and realized my left nostril is about 90% blocked. I'm not gonna risk it. I opened a regular Julius and could hardly make out the nose and the taste was pretty dulled.

Anyone ever have a similar situation? I'm not gonna crack a whale when I'm not on my A game. Haha

Still enjoy beer but not anything too fancy, but usually if I'm stuffed up I avoid most of everything. Soup year round.

The difference between Julius and KJ is negligable outside of the rare. You can wait until you aren't congested, won't really matter.

When I'm not feeling well, I don't really feel like drinking beer in general. Wait until you feel well to enjoy a couple cold ones, especially beers you haven't had before.

When I'm less than 100% for smell or taste, I'll avoid reviewing a new beer, and won't drink anything high-priced and/or cult.

Since 80% of what we taste comes from smell, I usually don't drink anything that I actually would like to taste when my sinuses are stuffed up. I usually eat spicy foods to help clear the congestion and drink lots of water. I'm usually not in the mood for beer if I don't feel well.

Not exactly a whale, but I was once so congested I could hardly taste a Hopslam. I thought if any beer could make it through, it would be that one, but nope.

Slightly more whalish for me since nobody in my area carries it anymore, I wasted an Abt. 12 in the same manner. Never again.

If you don't mind your taste being dulled when you're cracking something you had to pay a premium for I guess that's cool cause you're the badass we all aspire to be.

I've been there many times. It often seems like the second I get my hands on some whale or receive an awesome BIF box, my allergies hit or I catch some sort of head cold. If it's a rare beer I'm not likely to come across again very easily, I'm not going to drink it all congested. It can be pretty rough waiting the day or two days or week to clear up.

I usually just abstain in that situation, but have also found that regular old Guiness hits the spot despite a stuffy nose. Cheers!

If you cant taste it don't waste a good beer.

Just drink your usual till your sense of taste returns.

Bourbon clears out the ole sinuses better than beer, IME.

Wait, is that not what you were asking?

Get yourself some Fluticasone (Flonase and other brands, even OTC generic). This stuff changed my life. What you need to know is that it won't really help until you've used it everyday for at least 2-weeks so don't give up on it. Seriously, changed my life in the spring.

Gotta killer recipe for a hot toddy. It helps but whisky is the answer and the main ingredient. 12 year old Glenlivet makes it very tasty.

I don't think that number is realistic for everyone. It surely isn't for me. Maybe it's allergies or whatever, but I've drank quality beer with plugged sinuses and it hasn't made that big of difference.

Onto the second half of your comment and spicy foods can **** my enjoyment for beer. Maybe the two are related, where you seem to get more out of the aroma, while I get more from the taste.

    YMMV
