You are not the only one disappointed. But Lounge does have my interest piqued.

 

Yeah, it's a real bummer. Too far to Uber for cheap, too far to drive or get dropped off and picked up. Just tough to make it work with all the different logistics. It's going to end up taking 2 hours each way to Uber to a shuttle and in and then reverse that. Gotta do it, though.

This! Skye isn't anything crazy but I do really like it and will drink it if available. Kinda interested in the 15 Moloko tbh. I wanna see how it holds up without the barrel. But agreed, definitely nothing special. Last year the released a new beer (mother of dreadnaught) for the day before. It wasn't fantastic or anything but it was cool all the same.

Hey guys, I haven’t been as active on this thread this year because it seems to drag the lead up to DLD out so long! Now that we’re this close, I think I’m good.

I wrote my take on each variant this year, and I’m anxious to see if some of you can talk me out of the negativity I have on some of them. Take a look:

Handjee gonna Handjee

Chemtrailmix- switching to rye should have little to no effect. The rye may add some hints of spice over bourbon, depending on the mash bills of the specific whiskeys.

FVM- Trump and Pump + adjuncts. They keep fucking this up.

Spaceforce- Temeculan 3000 and Legio Gemina also used these barrels. Not promising history there. At least the adjuncts in this are traditionally great adjuncts.

Lounge Against the Macromachine- most tequila BA stouts turn out mediocre at best. One exception would be 2014 Mexican Cake, but even Westbrook had issues duplicating that success with the 2016 and 2017 versions. The cinnamon and peppers should make this possibly good, but the cocoa nibs + tangerine scare the shit out of me.

Greatest Teachable Moments- Earl of Biggleswade 2.0. Barf.

Hung Drawn N Quartered- Regular BA DL (rye instead of bourbon). Safe bet with some of the garbage on this list. The rye may be better suited to counter the sweetness of regular DL (again, depending on the mashbills of the ryes).

Cavaleiro of Varnov- Oloroso Sherry is great for finishing non-peated scotches. There is solid history to suggest that this could be a true gem. The only scary part is the usual sweetness already present in regular Dark Lord probably doesn’t need to be sweetened more.

Brozerker- port BA Dark Lord with a cool name. The 2013 Part BA Dark Lord has solid reviews.

Brotilla- Ronaldo minus the cherries? Madeira (used for Ronaldo) and Carcavelos (used for Brotilla) are both Portuguese. After reviewing these 2 (along with the port style which is used in Brozerker), it looks like Madeira and Carcavelos have similar flavor profiles, depending on the type of Madeira barrels that were used in Ronaldo. I’m cautiously optimistic about this one.

Turtledogg- scotch BA stout. Most people will hate it. I expect to enjoy it, just like I enjoyed Scotch Parabola and Goose Island’s recent offering.

Brozerker/Brotilla/Cavaleiro of Varnov (3-way tie)

I can pretty much agree with this assessment. That, with the exception of Turtledogg.

Yeah Spaceforce! could either be 2017 FVM 2.0 or could be closer to FVM 2016 which would be great. It will be on tap, so I might try to get a pour.

Hung Drawn / Chemtrail / Handjee I think are sure things. They will be great.

Lounge Against the Macromachine could go either way, could be a nice Mexican stout thing going on, or could just be a mess. It has the potential to be this years sleeper hit, but could also be another Biggles/Temeculan disappointment.

All of the single barrel treatments, minus scotch should be pretty good even if very sweet. But nothing terrible, just share with people. I thought Dwarven (Muscat) and the 2013 Port were both not bad in small amounts.

FVM hopefully will be better than last year with a fortified wine barrel instead of Muscat.

Turutledogg will please scotch fans, but not others.

But seriously, where the fuck do they get all these obscure barrels from?! No one else seems to use them at all, not even for wild ales, at least very few that I hardly ever notice.

And more importantly, why the fuck is FFF even sourcing this stuff in the first place?! I mean just picturing them looking for these kinds of barrels at places that would seem diametrically opposed to their culture is a hilarious image.

Some of us beer drinkers are also sophisticated wine drinkers as well! Perhaps the Dark Lord enjoys a Sauternes from time to time...

 

I think we can collectively hope for a speedy opening of their distillery so they can use their own barrels....
