Are all Hazy IPAs mostly the same?

What was the 3Mag beer? I’d be willing to spring for it based on a good review.

Had Lawn Darts from UF last week and enjoyed it enough to get a second glass.

The two Holy Mountain/E9 collab IPAs are also hazy.

I stopped at UF today and they still had Mage Fight cans. That was a nice surprise.

I also can’t inagine buying more than a four pack of anything. I guess I don’t drink enough.

This, after cracking a 3Mags offering next to a Foam Brewers last year at a bottle share I've never bought another.

My current PNW (distro) Hazy/NEIPA tiers...

    1. Holy Mountain, Modern Times, Block 15, (PS, Wolves & People Nosecone is one of the best Hazy IPAs I've ever had)
1b. Fort George, Reubens, Breakside, Level, Great Notion, Pfriem
1c. Wayfinder, Baerlic, Ex Novo, Evil Twin,
    2. Matchless
    3. Revision
    4. 3 Mags
    5. SN, SA, NB

@itracy63 I should clarify the Three Magnets mention was based on a fresh batch and distribution of Little Juice Smoothie that is tasting really good. Access, price, and quality of this particular canning make this a great buy.

I confess i go back and forth on this, but I'm drinking a glass of Ft. George Eleanor right now, and I'm starting to feel annoyed. It's virtually a cookie cutter hazy ipa, with the predictable ocean of orange and pineapple juice on the nose and palate. There's almost no bitterness, it's expensive ($6 for a 12 ounce pour), it's murky, and in my opinion delivers virtually nothing of interest to me. It's absolutely in the camp of "heh, heh... Everyone else is making one, so we needed to make one too. Heh, heh... here's ours."

These guys make such great beer... Drinking this crap, it's hard not to feel a bit annoyed.

To each his own I guess. I thought Eleanor was one of the best hazy IPAs I’ve ever had.

Probably why they make it. It's clearly very appealing to at least some folks

And completely agree salemcheech. Each to their own. I'm just voicing my opinion.

If you get a chance, try the Belmont Station special hazy from Fremont. Probably the best Hazy I've had in a while. But yeah, I've been drinking a ton of Heater Allen, Zoiglhaus, and Pfriem Lagers lately as I am pretty burnt out on the Hazy thing right now. Also a big fan of the Bright Pale Ale

Right now hazy IPAs are where the $$ is, if I had a brewery, I’d be pumping them out and cashing in too. I guarantee a brewery could brew the same one twice, but change the name and label the second time around and cash in on the hype over a “new” release.

Structures does the opposite: they make a beer called "Fuzz, our ever changing IPA ". Each batch is different, but it saves them work. Plus, drives tickers crazy: "but bro, 5 more ounces of that cool hop changes everything bro. It's a different beer, should have a different name".

No, I'm not quoting my friend Dan. Nope. Not even a little.

Same grist every.single.damn.time. Hops rotate because we don't want to lose our minds brewing the exact same beer every week. We love to play around with different hop blends until we find the ones we love (El Dorado and Chinook are in almost every batch of FUZZ at this point).

We would have stayed working as shift brewers in big production breweries like we were before if we wanted to continue brewing the same beer all the time. We didn't open Structures to do things that we were already doing, we opened it to do things how we wanted to do them.

My impression is that this is what Claim 52 has been doing. They make sooooo many hazy IPA's, and at least to my palate, a lot of them taste very, very similar (and at least to me, pretty unappealing).

That being said, I can't disagree with your post, or C52's decision to make a raft of them. Hazy's are a hot item and it IS where the money is right now.

The ones that aren't just pure juice are the one's I've had a tendency to like. I also had the double dry hopped Orderville at Modern Times yesterday, and I liked it just fine (though I'm not sure it tastes all that much different from the regular Orderville). The beer has a huge juice presence, but also had some light bitterness, some pine and some dankness. The Eleanor just comes across as a juice bomb with pretty much nothing else. YMMV, but that's what I got, and I just didn't think it was very appealing. I'm a big fan of Ft. George stuff, and I really feel as if they could (and should) have done a better job with it.

Taste being subjective and all, for those that enjoy the Northeast/West Coast mash-up, I really liked West Coast Masshole from Matchless, one of the rare hazies I’d purchase a second time.

I haven't tried very hard to keep up with all the hazes. I'm just waiting for the next 3-way at the end of the month. Sounds like it might be crazy good.

I, too, am looking forward to trying it. I always look forward to each year's version.

That said, I did not enjoy how difficult it was to find last year, and it's hard for me to believe this year will be any different.

One of the best things about 3-Way was that it was always easy to find in great quantities. My wife and I went through cases of the stuff in 2014 and 2016. Last year it was too damn much work to find.

Maybe next year they'll buck the trend and go back to a clear, readily available IPA that isn't so fragile and they can actually can it in bulk.

hehehe, funny how the tide is finally turning in my favor on this thread (and some other threads). Seeing a lot more "im burnt out on the haze craze" and "they are all beginning to taste the same" comments lately.

there are obviously degrees of quality (like any style), but SO many taste nearly identical to me.

i enjoy the style, but man-o-man do I appreciate a good BITTER IPA, well made pilsner, maibock, helles, etc. etc. in the face of the haze-wave.

Maybe here, but don't kid yourself. The haze craze is at full steam out in the real world.

yeah i get it. its an extremely approachable style. was at Uptown Market last week and saw a couple ladies come in and ask for "every hazy beer you have" . they must have dropped $200+ on 4-packs and 22s of Haze.

I can't imagine buying 4-packs of everything, I don't drink enough. Very glad Chucks and Bottleworks let me buy singles of stuff.
