New Beer Sunday: A New Export Stout

Evenin’ NBSers, with a special alert for fans of export stouts and/or recreations of old beer recipes.

The weather here today was a bit different from the forecast. We had lots of sun, some occasional clouds and no showers. Quite the change from the last several days. (At least they got the temps close to right!)

This evening’s new beer is the 200th Anniversary Export Stout from Guinness. This beer was part of the Guinness Anniversary pack that I “inherited” from a friend. The beer is said to be based on brewery records dating back more than 200 years and is intended to be a recreation of the very first Guinness shipped to North America.

As usual, my review, subject to revision until the beer is finished, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/user/beers/?ba=drtth

The aroma/flavor profile of this beer is interestingly complex and has some chocolate, some roasted malt, a bit of anise, a bit of dark fruit and an almost burnt finish that turns dry as some caramel sweetness disappears from the back of the palate. I’m glad I got this beer to try and am looking forward to finishing off the other bottles in the basement.

Music on the player tonight is classic performance of Mozart’s Magic Flute. This opera has a very demanding aria that few sopranos carry of successfully.

The Queen of the Night—Maria Callas

    Cheers, all!

Gifted to me by one of the small cadre of craft beer drinkers I work with. I supply him with my home brews and he shares notable IPAs with me.
L - Hazy gold with a substantial off-white head that receded slowly allowing horizontal lacing to form then slide down the side of the Spiegelau IPA glass. (4)
S - Tropical fruits abound with guava and pineapple leading the charge. (4.25)
T - A monotone bitterness was present but not noteworthy. As if too much collaborating did not allow it to find its way. (3.75)
F - Strange but this is where this beer shined for me. Starting with an ear tickling astringency but followed by a smoothness that lulls one into thinking the show is over only to explode into a juicy, mouth-watering finish. (4.5)
O - Definitely a standout in the vast IPA universe. (4.25)

Pour is black with a dark tan head that recedes as quickly as rainwater down an open gutter with a fizzy flourish. The nose is equal notes rich coffee, vanilla (from the barrel), and earthy stone fruit.

The taste, though, has a healthy rich cocoa component, which I love. This combines very well with the coffee, vanilla, and stone fruit flavors. I only wish the mouthfeel was a bit more substantial, but this is still really good, IMHO.

Epic Big Bad Baptist Imperial Stout, 11.7% ABV. Pours black with a one finger tan head that left nice lacing. Nose is chocolate, and lactose, and a bit like 'smores. Taste follows, plus some coffee, moderate sweetness, light bitterness, some bourbon flavor. Excellent mouthfeel, overall outstanding.

    Hello New Beer Sunday!!!

A quick stop in Bemidji Brewing in Bemidji, and enjoying my first new beer of the day.

    Mexican Choco Late Porter.

There is a slight heat to it, but isn't strong. It really works well with the chocolate and vanilla. Really delicious.

Hey NBS, I'm bock, I mean back. Sorry for recycling that crappy pun from my WBAYDN. Anyways, this is my first time trying this beer, and one of my first beers representing this style. Let's dive into Tröegs- Troegenator Double Bock
    [IMG]
No observable bottling date, but it does say Freshest by 5/14/18.
    Look: 4.50
Deep plum/brown in color with hints of red. About 2 fingers worth of head, with minimal retention. Very generous amounts of residual glass lacing. I am a fan of both the color and presentation of this beer.
    Smell: 4.50
Huge notes of plum, figs, and dates. Also some hints of apricot and peach in there. There is a sweetness to the smell, reminding me of caramel and butterscotch. Malts prevalent on the nose as well.
    Taste: 4.50
Maybe since I am new to the style, I am over impressed, but I am diggin' this. Huge flavors of dark fruit, compiled with a rich caramely sweetness. The front end is mostly sweet, and the finish is somewhat bitter. The aftertaste is really sweet, with a molasses-like lingering flavor. Malt flavor is prevalent throughout the taste as well.
    Feel: 4.25
Medium in body and weight, with moderate carbonation. Slick property to the beer, but not chewy. Smooth yet nice balance of bitterness.
    Overall: 4.25
I am impressed. I enjoy the richness this beer has to offer. It is sweet, slightly bitter, and very tasty. Can't detect the 8.2 abv at all. I am eager to try more in this style.
    My Final BA Score: 4.43
    Cheers!

Opened up this can for my next brew. It was sent to me by somebody, but I can't quite figure out who, so sorry for no shout out.

Pours pale straw, hint of haze and a big bubbled thin head that is off white. The head bubbles itself out quickly leaving a tiny collar of bubbles.

Aroma is mineral and floral. Not much of the traditional hoppy smell I was expecting.

Flavor is similar to the aroma, floral layers I expect come from the honey with a mineral base that adds to the moderate level of bitterness.

The body is lighter side of medium with moderate carbonation. It does coat the tongue a bit.

A different brew. Interesting but doesn't have a lot of the typical IPA characteristics.

Amazing porter! Fantastic lasting head retention and thick soapy lacing on the glass. Aromas and flavors of huge peanut butter, milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, caramel, coffee, brown sugar, toffee, toasted biscuit, and dark/brown bread; with light notes of smoke and herbal hops. Light herbal/roast bitterness on the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium-plus body; with a fantastic creamy, silky, and velvety malt mouthfeel. Slight sticky hops, chalky roast, and lingering bitter dryness. No cloying sweetness. Zero warming 5.9%. Super drinkable. I need a 6 pack of this in my life ASAP! Extremely rich and well rounded malt complexity, with big authentic peanut butter presence. One of the best PB beers I have ever had by far! WOW 4.38
    [IMG]

Fantastic! Decent head retention, minimal lacing on the glass. Aromas and flavors of huge milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, nutty dark roast coffee, cinnamon, vanilla, chile pepper, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, bourbon, toasted oak, and dark bread; with light notes of molasses, smoke, char, dark fruit, and herbal pepper earthiness. Very mild herbal/roast bitterness and bourbon/oak/pepper spiciness on the finish. Light-medium carbonation and very full body; very creamy, silky, velvety, and rich mouthfeel that is fantastic. Slight slickness, sticky spice, chalky roast, and oak tannins. Minimal dryness, no cloying sweetness. Mildly increasing pepper heat and alcohol warmth of 10%, no barrel booziness. Dangerously smooth sipper. Super rich and complex malts, great coffee/cocoa/spice balance, and spot on barrel integration without any booze. I've got 2 more BBA cans from them to review from a friend. Ellison has been nailing everything I've tried yet. Even pale lagers. 4.25

Night Shift Brewing - One Hop This Time: Simcoe

After my positive reaction to their Matisse saison on a previous NBS, I’ve grabbed another brew from this brewer. This 6% ABV IPA is a hazy lemon/lime gold color. Nice head and lacing. Soft body. Herbal hop flavors dominate along with a very nicely dialed in bitterness. This is a little catty, a little grapefruity, and recalls fresh green onions a tiny bit - emphasis on fresh, this isn’t the oniony taste that can sink an IPA. This is a great IPA. The clean and striking bitterness is it’s greatest quality. I’m impressed.

Just poured this can from @LloydDobler who sent me an amazing box last week.

This is a big hazy DIPA collaboration from two breweries known for their IPA game.

Beer is hazy straw, grapefruit juice in appearance. Thin foamy head that settles into thin collar and leaves sticky foam lacing.

Aroma is ripe tropical fruits, peach and grapefruit. Zesty, and additional earthy hops.

Flavor is sweet tropical hop juice with a big backing of earthy resins and pine. Fresh peach flesh, sweet grapefruit juice and zest.

Moderate carbonation with a little bit over medium body.

Tasty brew, smooth, sweet, enough bitterness to balance things out somewhat.

I enjoyed about two hours of yard work today in 90 degree heat before giving up and moving to the deck to read and drink beer. Early I had a fresh Zombie Dust, thanks to @mschrei, then my first Sixpoint Puff of the year. This new beer is also thanks to @mschrei. Time to relax before the kids' last week of school.

    [IMG]image uploading site

Poured from a can dated 4/16/18. Pours a deep amber/orange with a one-finger white head and thin lacing

The smell is both tropical and citrus up front with tropical dominating. There's pineapple and orange up front with a bit of malt showing through.

The taste is less in your face than the nose but tropical flavors dominate again. There's a definite malt balance on this with a bit of a lingering, piney finish.

The mouthfeel is medium/low carbonation with medium body.

A very nice double pale. This may be my first double pale. The malt is a bit heavy for me, but a very good beer.

Prairie Artisan Ales Deconstructed Bomb! Coffee

    look: 4.25 | smell: 4.5 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.75 | overall: 4.5

I approached this with some trepidation because the regular Bomb! is such a model of balanced flavors that it might be my favorite blended imperial stout (please don't make me choose, Beer Gods), but this brewery hasn't let me down on anything so price be damned!

Poured into a DFH tulip there was a moderate dark tan head over a dark brown body. Smell was of boozy malty coffee. Taste was very coffee forward but not obnoxiously so with a slight, not overpowering, alcohol burn. Feel was just about perfect for the style.

I was gonna drink this last night but it was a yucky humid night with rain off and on and I decided I didn't want to mar a potentially very good experience. Tonight is cool and crisp and I'm in front of the stereo just loving everything.
