I can't say that I saw any of the cause for the police involvement, but I did see the couple in the pit having a grand old time. I hope my comments don't come off too judge-y, but they were putting on a bit of a show with the gal having her skirt hiked up far enough that her underwear was on full display from about 100 feet. And he appeared to be dressed in jean shorts and fishnet stockings. If anything, it seemed like the kind of behavior that you'd see at any one of the band's shows. Maybe a bit over the top for a beer festival, but nothing really offensive.

Cut to about an hour later, we happened to be standing in the variant line when she was dragged outside of the festival grounds by police kicking and screaming. We just assumed that it was a case of being over-served.

There is no room for that sort of behavior- Dark Lord Day is a respectable event. I'd hate to see it canceled because one person got drunk.:flushed:

And heaven forbid people who actually like the music go and enjoy themselves.

Wrecked-palate and post-recovery remembering from late Saturday:

    - FVM 18: absolutely loved it due to the strong coffee aroma and chocolatey taste
    - HJ 18: VERY sweet, can't compare to other years but glad I finally got to try it
    - Cavaleiro: again, it was late in the day, but it didn't taste that different than regular to me
    - Chemtrailmix 18: holy cinnamon bombs Batman. Not usually a fan of cinnamon but it works with the sweetness and smoothness. Had some bottled CTM 17 a couple weeks ago and cinnamon was still there but much less prominent. Keep that in mind if you like cinnamon in your beers and got this for your variant. Gotta think the same goes for FVM with coffee.

Otherwise, had a great time and I think arriving later/closing the fest down is the way to go. I apologize to the peeps we line cut for 6pm FVM, meeting up with another guy already in line, but we were chatting it up good, I left to go get Handjee, and the FVM seemed to last long past when we got pours.

Out of curiosity, anybody try this year's FVM and Spaceforce! and can compare? Was Space's coffee also very strong?

Oh, and the chicken & waffles was fantastic, Dylan Lord (sic) hot sauce is legit.

P.S. Total variant count at 13,202. Ran into someone who said tickets sold was closer to 15K than 10K in past years, will verify with the DLD info site later (@kodt ).

A FFF employee told me the day before DLD that 12,000 tickets were sold this year.

I only tried FVM (and loved it) but my buddy I was with tried both and he thought FVM was quite a bit better. so much chocolate & coffee in this year's FVM. if that was my variant I got I'd be for drinking fresh as opposed to aging (which is where I think a lot of people went wrong with FVM 17 - coffee fades/wine barrel notes grow more pronounced or just get weirder.)

I had a pour of 2015 Biggleswade in the Dark Matter line. Not sure if the age helped, but I thought it was quite good. Definitely had a “Spice rack” profile. Definitely funny how the perceptions of the variants seemed to have 180’d on here since they announced the list to post-DLD. Cheers everyone.

I opened my '17 FVM within a month of getting it and it was terrible. The barrel was awful and it was muddled sweet weird mess.

I agree it was an awkward barrel for that beer but I still got notes of S'mores just mixed with weird wine notes.

looks like the few ratings on here for Spaceforce! are not super great...

My group had a great time this year, really happy the weather held out. I know this might be an unpopular opinion but I did not like that they posted the variant tapping times. Some of those lines were insane and added to the event congestion. In years past, I liked waiting in a line to find out one keg was tapped and the next was a variant, it was like winning the lottery! I hope next year they expand the festival site, this was my 6th year and definitely felt more crowded. We left with the following variants:

    French Vanilla Militia
    Lounge Against the Macromachine
    Greatest Teachable Moments
    Brozerker x 2
    Cavaleiro of Varnov
    Turtledogg

I fear that if expansion construction is done in time for 2019 DLD that they will then be able to accommodate 20,000 in the industrial park. Maybe they'll have a Dark Lord Distillery Day in the fall....

Do you guys think they'll be using their own barrels for the 2019 DLD releases or not until 2020?

I rather enjoyed Spaceforce. It has a cocoa-coffee thing going that I thought was pretty tasty. I have not had FVM though, so I can’t compare. I’m actively looking for a bottle of Spaceforce for a reasonable price, and will happily wait until the hype dies down. I managed a Chemtrail and a Turtledogg...figures I’d get the rarest variant, that is a complete crapshoot on quality. Seems some people out there REALLY want it though, but I’ll probably crack it open with one of my scotch loving friends.
