If you're looking for beer, the Alaskan interior villages are probably not your best bets. Several of them ban not only the sale of alcohol, but importation and possession as well. A missionary I worked with a few years ago told me there were even places where he was not allowed to bring in any communion wine.

Even so, the locals seemed to find ways around it.

As a corollary to my previous post, Nunavut was probably a pretty hard place to find a decent beer in the past. Baffin Island's only brewery has recently announced their first beer. No idea if their beer will be any good, but ya have to admit, it would make a pretty cool place to add to the brewery visit bucket list!

The Dakota's get founders at least, unlike Colorado.

He'll, we get Founders. Doesn't exactly fly off the shelves, but we get it.

Nothing beats Saudi Arabia (and probably Iran). It's illegal to consume alcohol, and homebrewing can carry a severe punishment. Even possessing alcohol is forbidden. Makes other countries look liberal by comparison.

    Saudi Arabia:
"Drinking or possessing alcohol is illegal in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Persons who drink or possess alcohol are subject to arrest and trial. Punishments range from heavy fines, lengthy prison terms and whippings"

Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Pakistan - all illegal.
Yemen - illegal except for one city: Aden

Small Town Nebraska can be pretty bad. The northern half is mostly small cities spread far apart. A lot of the larger craft breweries skip over Nebraska and the small stores have limited shelf space. My cousin lives in a small town and they pretty much get New Belgium, Shock Top, Goose Island, Blue Moon and Sam Adams. Along with some (terrible) local stuff.

I know. I have trouble getting my wife to agree to a 30 minute drive out of the way to visit a brewery. I'm not sure how I'm going to convince her to forego a week in Jamaica for a trip up to the arctic!

I remember reading an article a few years ago about how bad alcoholism is some of those areas. The area focused on in the article not only banned finished alcohol, but brewing and winemaking supplies/equipment.

Cant speak for the world but for America Id say it has to be Arkansas, west Tennessee, Mississippi area.

Literally nothing that pulls me to that region. It's just a pass through spot on the wat to Dallas, Nashville or southern Louisana

Where I live in West Virginia (Parkersburg) is pretty dim for WV standards. A lot of the state breweries won't distribute because we're so close to Ohio, the stuff they do give us is basic and not very good anyway, and the beers just sit on the shelf because everyone drinks Busch and Bud.

It's a drive but you have to go at least 15 or so miles to get to the stores in Ohio. I buy probably 90% of my beers at a store almost 20 miles up the Interstate because it actually gets really good beer. Then you have Jackie O's and the Athens scene 30 miles up the highway in the opposite direction which is really good as well. Athens has a bottle shop that gets pretty rare offerings, and always has good options in the make your own 6 (Evil Twin stouts, IPA's from Ohio breweries, etc...)

I have a craft beer store in my neighborhood (in WV) and it will get stuff from Founders, Sierra Nevada, Stone (limited), Bell's, New Belgium, and Great Lakes. That's it. And there are of course freshness issues (Two Hearted dated from December still on the shelf)

I don't mean this in a racist "evil white man firewater" context, but I thought Eskimo and Native Americans in general just physiologically cannot process alcohol like other (European?) races. Maybe that explains the ban.

Your "analysis" is full of presumptions that are dead wrong. I'll just leave it at that.

But you did take a lot of time to write those worthless comments, so you seem to have more skin in the game than just blind butt-hurt patriotism. Care to share?

Quebec's craft beer scene makes Vancouver look like the shallow, latte-drinking poseur town it is. Bellingham WA has better breweries than BC.
And as far as Ontario goes: I suppose anyone there would be duly impressed with a dogpiss saison --- if you could buy it somewhere other than a government-run warehouse. That place is just medieval.

re: :"Sure, some of the macro stuff is far more expensive up here"
edit: replace some with all, macro with beer.

re: the "Magic Hat, Blue Moon and Sam Adams" petty slur:
It's high time more people realized that Canadians are in fact an intolerable bunch of world-class arrogant, smug asshats. They just don't let having nothing to be smug about get in their way.

re: Orval and Rochefort: I drink them in Brussels or Amsterdam....fresh. Not skunky, and for 5X the price like a fool.

I doubt there is a genetic tendency to addiction. Their addictions may have more to do with depression, poverty, and dis-incentives to work (aka handouts). This is what a Native American reformed alcoholic addiction counselor told me.

I agree with all of this but the handouts part. People of all walks of life drink and take money out of our pockets to do so. I doubt "hand outs" would be a contributing factor to drinking, other than maybe having more time to do so.

The handouts dis-incentivizes work, which leads to poverty - even with handouts, depression, addiction, etc.

Did a Canadian kill your dog or something? Your disdain for the country, its people and its beer scene comes off as a rather extreme.

Skunky Rochefort 10? Now I know you are pulling my leg. Nicely done!
