The obvious answer is Sam Adams Boston Lager for Massachusetts, but I would throw Mayflower and Harpoon in there as representative breweries as well. The Google says BBC is the oldest craft brewery in the state - I am not sure that is true, but I can't find anything to the contrary.

There are a plenty of breweries and beers that I guess fit the "blue/liberal" nature of the state - taking liberties with style guidelines, pushing the envelope of creativity, etc. but I would still have to go Boston Lager, Mayflower Porter, Harpoon IPA.

I thought the original premise of this thread was the brewery that most represents craft beer production for a state but later posts lean toward a particular beer. My vote for the most representative South Carolina brewery is Westbrook in Mount Pleasant.

Fat Tire represents CO's former reputation as "the amber state."
These days I'd probably go with something from Troy Casey. Maybe Cherry Fruit Stand. The fact that he uses all CO ingredients and we've been doing the wild/sour thing for a while makes me lean in that direction.

    Well giving this some thought

For D.C. (not a state but of course) - D.C. Brau - The Public Pale Ale
For Maryland - Flying Dog - Dead Rise Old Bay Summer Ale

For CA, I'd have to say Pliny . . . it not only set the template for the WC(D)IPA, but also carries a distinctly CA we-'re-too-cool-to-care-but-secretly-want-to-be-loved aspect. And it still remains a damn good beer, my personal desert island brew.

    Abita Amber or Dixie

but my personal pick would be Ghost in the Machine

Arizona Wilderness. They are big into outdoors lifestyle and using the states resources to create awesome beer. So with that I vote for them. There are a few others here I really enjoy but AZ Wild has stepped up their game so to say.

Really I was looking for a single beer or beers that you think capture the zeitgeist of your state. Not necessarily the most popular beer or the one that reflects your states brewing culture, but the one that you feel like you could tell a fellow BA 'drink this and you will understand what it's like to be a [insert state resident term here]'

Since Newman's was the start of the east coast micro brewery revolution, and that was the start of "craft" beer out here, and Albany, NY has a long history as a beer city going back many generations, I would love to be able to say Newman's Albany Amber is the answer to OP's question for NY State. I would even pick any of the ambers brewed by FX Matt under the Saranac label, since Matt goes back to mid 1800's as a brewery. But sadly those ambers aren't around now.

Another poster said Brooklyn Beer as their choice for NY, and while I regret that choice due to I don't care for almost all their beer, I guess that is as good a choice as any, since they were around before Saranac.IIRC

I'd say the classic OR representatives would have to be Deschutes (Mirror Pond and Black Butte), Widmer Hefe, and Rogue Dead Guy. I'd put Pelican Mother of all Storms in that bid as well, but it clearly sees far less distribution.

    Cheers.

(Side note: While I agree with Pliny and Anchor Steam, no one mentioned SNPA for CA!?)

SNPA is certainly the CA representative for drinkers outside of CA. Always a solid go to when traveling.

I don't want to speak for Pennsylvania as a whole, but for the Philly area it's gotta be Hop Devil -- we're old-school and bitter.

CA as a whole is very hard to represent with one or two. You'd almost have to go by region. No question that for years Stone IPA was the clear Southern rep, and Firestone Walker DBA for the Central Coast. Perhaps Lagunitas along with Pliny for North. Too many to list.

Kind of a difficult one to answer here in Ohio. My first thought was GL Christmas Ale (which I don't like much personally) but it is, obviously, a seasonal. FH Head Hunter is probably the most ubiquitous (doesn't equal 'representative,' I know) and I happen to really like it so I will go with that one.

I like @JayORear 's take on why Pliny fits cali, and I had another thought while thinking about it last night. The Booth EurekaSeoul Citra hop ale. They are a Korean brewery that came to cali so they could increase their production to send back to Korea, then found such a great excitement for their beer by locals that they started experimenting with batches of NEIPAs for local release and now sell a rotating series of those as well as their flagship Kukmin IPA (wc style) around town.
