    New Beer Sunday: An IPA

Afternoon NBSers with an alert for fans of IPAs with a noticeable caramel malt backbone and some citrus fruit.

This afternoon’s new beer is the Flesh & Blood IPA from Dogfish Head.

As usual, my review, subject to revision until I finish the beer, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/64/205200/?ba=drtth#review

The aromas/flavors of this beer include some nice citrus riding on top of a rich caramel malt backbone that has noticeable sweetness and keeps the light hop bitterness well controlled. The citrus which is the focus of the beer is a mix of lemon and some blood orange that also has a touch of resin. This beer is worth a try and I’ve more in the fridge so I’ll be revisiting this one. If I were to change anything it would be to emphasize the citrus flavors from the fruit just a bit more. (One way to think about this beer, think DFH 60 min. brewed with real fruit to produce flavors beyond what may be brought to the table by hops.)

    Cheers, all!

Loved your review. The phrases that grabbed me were earthy and fragile, refined but not too precious. I will look for it! Cheers!

Time for a classic. The beer pours a clear, pale yellow amber with 3 finger white foamy head. Aroma is the expected banana and clove elements, albeit much dialed down. Nice wheat malt and a flavor is similarly subtle yet reasonably complex, neutered clove pervades the proceedings but is trumped by fruity citrus notes, orange, and bubble gum. A pleasant dry wheat spiciness lurks in the background along with a light caramel sweetness. Light bodied and prickly carbonation. A delicious beer to be enjoyed at anytime.

Weihenstephaner and Sierra Nevada Collaboration Braupakt, 6% ABV. Pours cloudy orange, with a nice two+ finger white foamy head that left foamy lacing. Nose is yeast and banana, taste is banana and clove, with a moderate hoppy bitter close. Excellent mouthfeel, overall outstanding. Still prefer Weihenstephaner Hefe Weissbier.

Thru a pork shoulder into my Webber Smokey Mountain machine at 5am, made a potato salad, a bourbon based BBQ sauce and nursed a few beers.
I offer Brickstone Brewerys Dark Matter, an Imperial stout with Barrel Aged Coffee Beans. Who'da thunk it?
Poured from a 12oz can this looks to be a thick, oily brew, and offers up a dark brown head that lingers, not much lacing. Ten-tidy, watch out.
Aroma is muted, mostly coffee a bit of chocolate. Taste matches the aroma. Smooth body, goes down easily. Solid beer.
One last note for all you Chicago Bear fans, this is brewed in Bearbonnais, Illinois, training camp home of "Da' Bears".[IMG]

Ah, doppelbocks! One of my all-time favorite styles.

This particular example appears to follow the classic stylings. It's rich, infused with tasty dark malt qualities, adding just the right touch of bitterness, and feels quite smooth and rich on the palate.

I certainly miss other classic American examples -- specifically Boston Brewing's doppelbock (which I looked forward to every year until it mysteriously and inexplicably disappeared from distribution), but as long as smaller breweries such as Bayern churn out well-made examples of this beer, I'll remain satisfied...

And a fine beer to savor while listening to Clay Jenkinson's "The Thomas Jefferson Hour" on the radio...

Poured from a 16 oz can picked up at the brewery yesterday. No date, but I am pretty sure it was canned this week based on the how they say the sell out every weekend.
Pours very opaque, golden juice color, small head some lacing. The nose is rather mild, but hints of melon, pineapple, apricot.
Taste is also mild for the style, but similar flavors at the front. Nice hop finish with mild alcohol warmth. The body is fantastic, great mouth feel, very representative of the style.
Worth the purchase and a great beer but not a wow beer.

Good Afternoon NBSers I finally have a Sunday where I can sit down and relax, no kids to move or chores to do so think I will sit down with a few new beers and enjoy myself. I am not sure where I got this (I know through trade) but I have it for a good bit but I wanted to save it so I could sit down and really enjoy it. First new beer today is Hill Farmstead Everett described on the can as a Robust American Porter and that it is. I am not sure I have had a porter with as much smoky/nutty/roasted flavor as this one. It is just wonderful the smoky roasted coffee and malts really stick to your mouth it is just a wonderful beer.

Appearance 4.25 - Pours jet black with big fluffy mocha colored head that leaves tons of lacing all around the glass.

Aroma 4.5 - Big coffee, roasted malt, char, rich milk chocolate, light vanilla, very bold and rich.

Taste 4.5 - good bit more smoke on the taste than the nose, coffee, roasted malts, decadent chocolate flavor it is almost like a smoked chocolate dessert. light vanilla on the finish the roastiness carries on and on.

Feel 4.75 - Big full creamy mouthfeel slick oily nice dry finish.

Overall 4.51 - Just an amazing porter not sure I have had one with this much roast and nuttiness. Excellent full mouthfeel.

Howdy, everybody! I'm way behind on my gardening and, well, everything else I suppose. My freelance side work (architectural drawings) has picked up immensely this year, and that has been taking up most of my spare time. Just yesterday I was in Astoria measuring up a house for the start of what looks to be a really fine renovation- so today I really had to make every effort to clear the docket of other projects, and I've been at it since breakfast. So far, so good, and I'll get two out by the end of the day, but right about now I need a little 'me time'.

I've really been looking forward to this one since I had their superb Kolsch not too long ago. It's Altstadt Lager from Texas, and was sent to me by @Premo88 , whose last boxes were just packed with pleasant surprise after pleasant surprise.

And I'd count this among them. They just use the generic 'Lager' term here, but you know on your first sip that it is brewed in the Munich Helles style. The malt flavor is richly bready, balanced with just enough slightly grassy/spicy noble hops. I'm also getting hints of pear juice and lime peel. The finish is malty yet dry, and bitterness is unobtrusive- so they got the feel absolutely correct on that end.

My only issue is that it seems like it could use a bit more 'pop', like the pH needs to be dropped a smidge. I bet a dash of salt would do wonders here. That kind of thing would keep it out of the top tier for me, but it's still quite the enjoyable brew. Right now it's a low A- (4.1) from me, but I do have another bottle, and who knows how that could change . Thanks again, Robert, I'm really glad to have this place on my mental radar now!

From a 16 oz can made this week to a nonic.
Beautiful beer! Pours very opaque gold/yellow big multi-sized bubble head.
Nose is light, like my other Tilted Barn today. Mostly over-ripe melon.
Taste is sweet to dry in a nice way. Pineapple to hop desiccant.
Mouthfeel is creamy, juicy, thick. A real pleasure to drink.

What's up NBS. Nothing combats the heat better than a 11.8 abv stout. This is my first of the deconstructed series, figured I would start with vanilla.
Look: Pours pitch black with apparent viscosity. 2 fingers worth of full tan head, which settled and left heaps of residual lacing.
Smell: Very sweet smelling. Chocolate and malt are the superstars, with some butterscotch/caramel/toffee undertones. Not picking up much vanilla on the nose. Alcohol also detectible on the nose, but its minimal.
Taste: Huge roasty malt and chocolate fudge flavor. The chocolate is semi-sweet with decent bitterness. Slight coffee flavor in the beer as well. The finish is sweet with a booze burn, leaving a sweet caramel/chocolate flavor in the mouth. The vanilla becomes more pronounced as the beer warms, but so does the alcohol. Still very likable.
Feel: Medium in body but carries a nice weight. Carbonation is moderate to high for the style. Very nice feel and remains smooth.
Overall: Prairie makes another great stout- no surprise. This set my expectations high for the others in the series. I love vanilla in stouts, and though this was a little more chocolate forward rather than vanilla, it is still damn tasty.

    Look: 4.00 Smell: 4.00 Taste: 4.25 Feel: 4.25 Overall: 4.25. Final Score- 4.18

It's been a productive morning. The car has been vacuumed out after lots of sand volleyball this weekend. I'll do a waterless exterior wash later tonight when the sun quits cooking the panels. My room has been slightly cleaned up and the beginning stages of a purge have taken place in prep for a move that may be happening in the next couple months. Suppose it's time to inventory the cellar next and start knocking it down a touch as well. Any body want to help? Otherwise, I have plenty of dark robust beers to help me pay back those who help me move.

Life stories aside, here's a new to me beer hauled home via some great family members.

    Bearded Iris's Double Homestyle.

Pours a foggy, cloudy orange with a finger of white foam. It looks rather stock standard for an IPA. Pouring the final ounces of the can into the glass gives the beer a little more of a haze, but it never turns murky. Aroma is light mango, papaya, and lemon zest with a huge hit of biscuit malts behind. Tropical fruit notes become more powerful as the beer warms up. Malts play a solid role, while allowing the hops to sing. Flavor profile is mango, papaya, tangerine, and lemon zest. Tropical fruits are more abundant in the flavor profile than the aroma. Biscuit malt plays a role, but not as hearty as the aroma. Mouth feel is smooth, and aside from a little fuzziness via a light graininess, is rather soft. It carries a medium thickness. Overall, fair hop notes mashed with a solid malt base give this beer a good character. The 8% ABV peaks through a touch when the beer is straight out of the fridge (~40F), but recedes as the beer warms a touch.

G' afternoon NBS-ers! I hope everyone is enjoying theirs!
I received today's entry in the last NBS BIF from @foundersasap

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a JK Snorkel glass.

Appearance: Beautiful ruby red body with a fizzy head of bubbles on top.

Aroma: Oh yeah! Cranberry, lambic funkiness, a red wine-like smell as well.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Plenty of cranberry fruit and tart and sour funk. A light and fizzy mouthfeel the helps the tartness of this one.

Overall: A tasty beer full of tart and sweet flavors and yet it isn't too overpowering that you can drink it. A lovely beer.

    Cheers!

I am finishing off my Sunday with a cookout. Nothing fancy. Just some baked potatoes and London Broil, which has been in a marinade all afternoon. But I always coat my baked potatoes in an olive oil mix that includes chive and thyme from my herb garden.

Now for the beer. From New Hampshire, this is the 7th Settlement Free Bird Barleywine. It is a powerful 11.9% ABV. New Hampshire generally does not allow anything over 12% so they came in just under the max. It is new since it was released in March 2018. The pour is a brown tone with a quick-lived off-white head and a slight cloudiness. That 11.9% booze is strong in the aroma and taste. A bit too strong. Although I know Barleywines tend to be strong, this seems over the top and almost distracting from the barley, pear, and sweet caramel sensations playing second fiddle. I rated it 3.58 on BA.

Good afternoon, NBS crew! I spent the morning and early afternoon with fellow NBSers @larryi86 and @thebeers at Tired Hands for their 6th anniversary can release. 7 new cans were released! But we ended up standing in line for 6 1/2 hours before we got them...

Today’s first new beer is from @vabeerguy . Mike knew I was a big fan of The Veil’s ddh Galaxy DIPA, so he immediately sent me cans of this little-brother single IPA. Thanks as always Mike for these fresh Veil cans!

L - 3-finger marshmallow white head is high density and lingers. Body is an opaque, gleaming orange.

S - tropical fruits, orange, pine, some herbalness. Has an earthy/soily element to it that is unusual.

T - interesting. Dirty/earthy hops are what I get first, which I don’t associate with Galaxy. A small amount of dankness, along with orange and pineapple. Medium bitterness. Low sweetness. No booziness.

    F - medium body with medium-high carb.

O - an unusual take on a single-hop galaxy ipa.

    Weyerbacher + Jackalope's Rockytop.

Pours a slightly foggy copper with a finger of white head. Head retention is okay with a final ring of foam lasting a long while. Aroma is yeast, lemongrass, light rye spice, and toasted, biscuit malts. It has an open and airy aroma. Flavor profile is lemongrass, yeast, rye, and biscuit, toasted, and nutty malts. Nice round flavor profile giving it a sweet, but not sugary feel. The rye cuts the sweetness just a touch. Mouth feel is lightly fizzy, with an otherwise crisp feel. It has a medium thickness. Overall, good qualities all around. It has a welcoming and warming effect, with sweet notes cut properly via rye. Personally, not picking up any honey notes.
