Are all Hazy IPAs mostly the same?

Me too, but I feel as if I also have to give credit to the significant increase in high quality alternatives to the IPA's I always crave. The Chuckanut Kolsch was a complete revelation to me, and is easily the finest Kolsch I can recall ever tasting. It's a beer I'd order again in a heart beat. And the current pils/lager selection in the NW... have we ever had it better when it comes to domestic versions of these beers?

While I don't think I eschew hazy IPA's quite to the same extent that you do, I do get tired of them pretty quickly and am very happy to find some excellent alternatives.

is the Chuckanut Kolsch available around Portland?

I had the pFriem Kolsch last weekend and I loved it.

I haven't seen it recently, but it was around as of a month ago. I think the pils is still pretty easy to find around town, so I would assume the Kolsch is around.

Haven't had a chance to try the pFriem Kolsch, but have heard a number of folks singing its praises. It's on my short list of beers I need to try.

I had the Kolsch a couple weeks ago at Hoplandia. It's really absurd how good Chuckanut is at Lagers. Hell even their Mexican Lager was fantastic.

I've snagged the Pfriem Kolsch and it's definitely really good. Probably would rank it up there with Heater Allen, Zoiglhaus

Remember that Josh Pfriem was the original brewer when Chuckanut opened. He probably learned a thing or two from Will Kemper. Also, fellow Cnut alum Bryan Cardwell is on team at pFriem now too.

Wayfinder brewer Charlie Devereux is an Alum as well. They've had a Vienna Lager from Chuckanut on for a while that is absolutely fantastic. Speaking of which I just saw that the following event was announced at Belmont Station:

    For the Love of Lagers

Pretty much my favorite non fest event in while.

    Preach, brother.

I pretty much ignored lagers and pilsners for most of my beer-drinking life. That changed when I tried Upright's Engelberg Pilsner 5 or 6 years ago. Good thing, too. Otherwise I would have missed out on Heater Allen, and The Commons' German-style beers, and Chuckanut, and Occidental, Zoiglhaus, Buoy, Wayfinder, pFriem...

Also: Is there any other forum on BA where a discussion on hazy IPAs would turn into a thread praising the joys of lagers and pilsners?

    I love the NW forum.

It was the easy transition from trendy beer style to unfashionable beer styles which made me grin.

I had a WA hazy the other day at a quiet local place in North Seattle. Nothing special, not at a special event- $8.60 for a 16 oz. pour :slight_frown: I think the hype is hiking the price....

    And the brewery was...?

It was Fortside Orange Whip. It was certainly good, but not $8.60 good.... High prices like that are why the majority of my purchases are at brewery taprooms.

Kevin Davey, Wayfinder's current head brewer is also a Chuckanut alumni. On a related note, the Station is having a "For the Love of Lagers with pFriem and Friends" event on 6/16 featuring a bunch of stuff from pFriem, Chuckanut, and Wayfinder.

People tend to scoff at Kolsch beers. For the umpteenth time..........Chuckanut Brewery makes one of the WORLDS FINEST KOLSCH BEERS!

On top of their quality beers, the pricing is borderline ridiculous (in a good way). For some reason, Chuckanut have NOT been bottling their Kolsch, Lagers, Pilsners, etc for some time. Talk about withdrawal....Ha. Not a big fan of their Dunkel Beer which was being pushed heavily for a while. For real, bring on the summer beers Chuckanut!!!!!!
