I have eating and drank around the world. 90% of the time no problem. Once in a while you come upon one that just boggles the mind. This was one of the 10%, service was good, food was good. Just the attitude of the staff was bad. Actually, it was sort of surreal. I swear I could not get the guy to recommend anything but an IPA. I ended up going to the bar myself and getting a drink when he wasn't around! From my experience, I have seen the attitude in other Craft Beer bars as well, but not to the point of writing about it.

That made me laugh. That said, my jeans are not skinny enough nor are my tattoos ironic enough (I don't have any) to be considered anywhere in the realm of hipster. Add to that the fact that I don't wear glasses or do Crossfit and my hipster rating is pretty low.

I think people are being a little hard on the OP. Even if this is more of an internal than external thing, it's still happening. The problem is the binary nature of the environment. Craft beer and big beer. It is what it is, but it's clearly not the ideal.

My fiance (wife next week) got into craft beer shortly after I did. She started to get a little big for her britches (borderline snobby) so I had to put her in her place a little. She's good now, had to remind her of her drinking roots though. That goes for most craft beer drinkers, few of us started off sipping whalez and giving tasting notes. It is funny when a snob tries to educate someone who knows more than them though:slight_smile:

Yeah, I have no tattoos. My jeans are skinny because they're the only pair that fit anymore (thank god for stretchy jeans lol). My hipster ranking would only be supported by my beard, which isn't even trimmed neat most of the time. I'd classify myself as a short haired hippy if I had to take a label I guess...

Maybe that is the real problem, I just don't get along with hipsters. I swear when I went to the bathroom this morning it was 1991. : ) Just kill me if I have to wear skinny jeans, drink IPA and do crossfit...

Guys - beards have been post-hipster for a while. I see plenty of finance douches (I am a finance douche btw) sporting them. It’s been this way for a couple of years now here in NYC. Secondary and tertiary markets will catch up soon if they haven’t already.

Now that is a good discussion question, where are your drinking roots?

I come from the New York Ballantine, Shaffer, Rheingold and Shlitz era. Those are the beers I stole from my Dad's refridgerator when I was a teen.

If a bartender is discussing the "nuances" of an IPA with me, I think that's pretty cool. I wouldn't consider it "lecturing".

You guys seem to seriously underestimate how many assholes are out there in craft beer bars.

I remember when one guy made fun of my friend when he was telling us he visited the Leinenkugel brewery. WTF.

I guess this is something you only "get" if you see the whole scene from outside.

Edit: Most people are cool though, but things like that do happen

When it comes to being preached at my level of indifference is infinite. If my bored expression doesn't work then I start correcting their sentence structure.

I travel frequently to Detroit for work. There are several bars light on craft beer right next to the Cobo Center, such as Cobo Joe's (Molson, Blue Moon, Guinness Blond, and Stella on tap and only a couple of craft options). It's actually very easy to get a "normal beer" at a restaurant around the Cobo Center. To me, for a city of its size, Detroit is notable for not being oriented toward craft beer by 2018 standards and compared to much of the rest of Michigan.

I do get the impression that the availability of some of the European imports that were popular in the late 20th century has waned, as many customers have shifted to American craft beers and others to international adjunct pale lagers. I can see that development being frustrating if you're still a fan of those old-school imports.

To the OP, there is a lot of great modern beer to be tried if you shed your disdain for those bearded, tattooed millenials sitting next to you and focus on what's in the glass.

Different if you are interested in IPAs. I asked the guy what Kolsch's and Pilsner's they had. I find Kolsch a good starting point beer if I don't know the bar. I got a 20 minute lecture on IPAs and how I should really try it. I don't care for hoppy beer. Sorry.

Why is it so hard for anyone to believe that some people want craft beer? This thread makes me happy. I feel pretty too! lol!

Wish I talked to you before my visit. You are right about the European imports, which is where I usually live. I drank Craft Beer all week, usually Kolsch's and Pilsners. No issues, it was the attitude I had a problem with. I drank Stroh's on tap all night, it was not bad.

What do you know about Spokane, going there next!

Funny that you say this because on the NYC trip that I mentioned earlier, I asked for local recommendations twice on the entire trip and both servers/bartenders suggested an IPA. They were the only IPAs that I drank all weekend. Not that I don't like them, I have just gotten to the point where I want to drink other types of beer.

I just figure that it's the same percentage that's in the world as a whole. Pretty high percentage, if you ask me.

Did he go for the shandy?

I definitely think it's more difficult to see how it looks from the inside, but it's not impossible. If beer geeks would just stop taking themselves so seriously, this would be a non-issue. It's just beer, no reason to get all uppity about it.

My conversations about beer with my bartenders usually don't go beyond, "What did you think about ____ beer?" or, if it's the beer manager, "What do you have in the queue?". Other than that, we just talk about normal people stuff, like music or sports or some funny thing that happen at the pub or at work.

Life is too short to judge what others chose to drink. I'm sure there are people out there who love to do so, but that is their choice.

I wouldn't expect every bar with a majority craft to have non-craft options, but the staff should be better trained to offer more accessible options than IPAs to people who either say they don't like them or haven't tried them. That level of training truly is not that hard.
