Unfortunately that’s probably because the output of (well regarded in beer nerd circles) NYC/surrounding area breweries is ~80% IPA. Hopefully that starts to change soon. Glad you had a good time otherwise

It's just the generation gap, brother. It's easy to look at that younger group of people and think that they're assholes because their culture is different than yours. I know that I catch myself doing it from time to time.

It was awesome, man. I try to drink mostly local beer when I travel, but with most beer menus being 1/3 - 1/2 hoppy beers, the degree of difficulty goes up a little.

I would say it's kind of snobbish to say that locally brewed IPAs are "whatever ... the owner created in his garage". Just because a beer is brewed in small batches doesn't mean it automatically sucks or is of poor quality.
Reminds me of the Golden Road founder talking down to homebrewers saying something about "beer they made in their bathtub".

You've probably described every single bar except for 2 around here. And I'm glad the 2 exist because I can go to one place and try a bunch of beers from the area without driving all over the place.

I was at a local bar/pizza place, a nice one with a large selection of good beers. Some guy ordered a coors light and the bartender responded something like “really a Coors light?”When the customer got the can of coors light he responded “hey the mountains are blue.” The bartender said “they better be otherwise that beer tastes like shit.”. While it did make me chuckle kinda assuming the bartender was mostly trying to be funny but if I was the one ordering the coors light I would see it as what a dick.

That's one of those, "Why do you carry it, then?" scenarios.

So what did the bartender say exactly? Did they say they do not carry any Kolsch or Pilsner and then go into their IPA discussion? Did they ignore your question outright? What options for anything other than IPAs did they have, if any? Seems some more details around the encounter might help frame your experience a bit better for us. Well, for my anyway.

Pretty sure the bartender has no say it what’s stocked. As the owner/manager probably wants to capture additional sales by carrying it.

Indeed, but being a dick about a beer that you carry isn't a good look.

This made me laugh because there is a place that I used to go to that had Budweiser products, cider, and IPAs ... except IPAs was just what they called every craft beer they had. So the conversation would go like this:

Me: What craft beer do you have?
    Server: We've got several IPAs
    Me: Oh ok, what IPAs?
Server: Um, Goose Island Green Line, Victory Golden Monkey, Samuel Smith's Organic Apricot beer and a local wit beer ...
    Me: .... uhhhhh ....

I agree, especially when you work mostly for tips. It’s like a server busting someone’s balls for ordering chicken at a steak house. Why do I care what someone else drinks. I am not the one drinking or paying for it

Agreed. I wouldn't want to discuss the nuances of a particular beer the entire time. It can be a good conversation starter though.

I never had many people wanting to chat me up at beer bars. Especially attractive women, but I digress...

And I agree with others who say you really shouldn't expect to find adjunct lagers in a craft bar any more than you should expect a good craft selection in a bar with Miller and Bud neon signs in the windows.
