This is tough because a part of me wants to think of beer as the "everymans" drink, but then when we get snobby we kind of lose our manliness....For me, I know the bars/restaurants in my area that have good beers on tap and maintain their lines, but I'm not going to go to a fancy Italian place and get dicky about the beers, because in that case I am there more for the food...

Beer should not taste like orange juice.. Stop seeking beer that drinks like oj and just buy oj... You will save a ton of money

Same applies to flannel shirts. They are essentially the working class Mainers dress shirt/work shirt/casual wear. My grandfather wore them,my father, me. I now blend in with hipster trash that don’t actually work for a living. This is purely unintentional. Hipsters ruin everything.

True story. I was at a brewery and asked for a Howler of one of their beers. An asshole, standing in line, immediately begins to laugh and ridicule me in front of my friends, his friends and assorted strangers. “It’s called a Growler you idiot, not a Howler” and so on. I politely directed his attention to the chalkboard as well as the rest of the crowd and asked him to read it aloud. Growler, Crowler, and yup, Howler. Oh, the satisfaction of watching his very public humiliation.

The only beer dicks I've ever encountered were at releases, these assholes cut lines , had mules, xtra trips to get beer to trade. The local Pub your as likely to see a Corona as the current hop hot IPA on tap. Works for me.

I’m 6’3 285. A look usually is enough. And for the record I’m not a badass, a tough guy, or the type of person who likes to intimidate people but size has advantages at times like these.
Don’t forget cutting you off when trying to pull into a parking spot.

Exactly. I never have any problem finding something to drink, and I never catch any attitude from bars around here. What is fun, though, is to occasionally eavesdrop on some fellow holding court with his friends after a few 8%+ beers. It's generally the odd patron that has the dismissive attitude about what beers are available on any given day.

I'm curious if someone could carbonate Sunny D and add Gin and called it a Northern New England IPA if it'd be wildly celebrated

I was in Milwaukee a little bit ago and I found all bars and tenders to be very helpful and nice. They all answered my Q's and steered me to good local beers and that includes local big beers. I was at local local places and larger breweries and all in between. I dont go out much at home but on business I do and almost always hit it off with the bartender. I prefer a dive bar with live music or just good music and am fine drinking PBR or whatever. Good food is nice too. I am in no way a hipster even though I have a big goat and wear glasses.

I even had a great conversation at the airport with the tender and a few patrons. At $10 Moon Mans it was a really nice way to forget I dropped over $50 plus tip before I got on the plane.

If you get grief at a bar let them know you are going elsewhere with your cash and walk out. Ive done it and have no problem doing it again.

    Enjoy

Precisely. I go into a bar with a heavy craft presence (not a brewpub or brewery, maybe a restaurant bar with plenty of craft on tap and bottled). The taps are unfamiliar to me so I ask what's on offer, and they rattle off barrel aged pastry stouts and IPAs brewed with stuff like Froot Loops and all things dank and hoppy and high alcohol. After experiencing the Shock of the NEW I'll hear them say, "And we have Sierra Nevada Pale Ale in bottles." So I pick the SN and I get an eyeroll and a Heavy Sigh. But I do get the SN, the only thing that I know for a fact will be satisfactory. I've been burned too many times by precious offerings that cost plenty and leave me a little bit wanting.

I'm just curious how this keeps devolving into hating on NEIPA's??
    Isn't that another thread??

When will the big goat hipster trend finally end? Bars are becoming unbearable.

I could say the same thing about any industry or hobby though.

People make fun of others for not owning the most limited pair of sneakers when they consider themselves 'sneaker heads'. People make fun of others when they talk about a bourbon that isn't Pappy or some other rare bottle. People make fun of others when they're grinning talking about fixing up their 90's import car just because it isn't a BMW or some other high-end, high-dollar car. People make fun of others when they finally reach a new level of fitness in the gym, in the pool, or on the roads just because the other person lifts more or swims or runs faster. People make fun of others because they're playing a drumset from the 80's with cracked and old cymbals. People will make fun of others because... the list could continue indefinitely when related to hobbies/interests.

There are assholes and entitled folks in every hobby. Doesn't make it right, but there are, and will always be, people who don't understand the value in being modest and humble. If I run across snobbish behavior from a service staff member, I leave no tip, and let the manager know I am disappointed*. That sends two very clear messages. If I return and continue to get met with bad service, then I'll let family and friends know about the poor service. Fortunately, I really have never dealt with this in the beer world aside from one run-in with a proud cicerone.

*Doesn't have to be a big display. A simple "I was very disappointed in ____ tonight." will do. If they care enough to make their establishment more welcoming, then they may ask for more specifics on why.
