Given the rising popularity of microbreweries and brewpubs, and the relative slowing of sales of many larger nationally distributed breweries, I'm curious to what extent this is reflected in the BA Community.

So just for fun, what percentage of the beer you drink is locally brewed? Local is a relative and subjective term, obviously, so for the sake of the poll, local means anywhere you could drive to from your home and back within a few hours (so "the next state over" doesn't count if it still takes you all afternoon to get there). Feel free to estimate, or check your BA stats for extra credit!

Since I have cut back the overall amount of beer I drink. the amount of local I drink is up to about 40%.

I could check one based on percentages, but none of your "humorous" descriptions fit, (especially the one where I would be "normal") so... pass. :sunglasses:

You forgot "None of the above." As is the case for @MNAle, none of the descriptions fit my habits/patterns.

I apologise to you and @drtth and anyone else that my sense of humor hasn't made the cut. I didn't mean for the descriptions to be binding, just a way to make the poll a bit more fun.

Feel to contribute to the survey just by using the numbers!

I try to support local but besides Toppling Goliath, there's only a couple local breweries I'm a fan of and check out often.

If we define local as "within a few hours", then I can probably safely say about 80% of my current inventory comes from New England. That "few hours" includes my heavy hitters - Allagash and Jack's Abby. I haven't actually done inventory in a long while since it was kinda hopeless, but I have a decent idea of what's on my personal shelves _ Allagash and Jacks Abby/Springdale dominate. If I define local more narrowly, let's say 15 - 20 minutes away, then I am certainly less than 10%.

When I look at beers reviewed, I am at 45% from New England out of 372.

I agree about the on the category descriptions being strange, but I can play by the numbers. Combined, I land in that 40 - 60% range overall. I do review any new beer I drink, and often those happen when I travel for work rather than just Sundays.

Off topic: Funny that the "dope can art" is mentioned (and apologies for the mini-threadjack). It's rapidly becoming a pet peeve of mine - we were in a local store last weekend, and there's a lot more cans than bottles on shelf now. There was about ten feet of shelf space top-to-bottom jammed with (non-local) cans that were impossible to identify. It was like a unicorn had vomited a rainbow the crashed horribly - just a mass of colors, couldn't read any print from a foot(ish) away, and could not identify a brewery never mind a particular beer. Very graphic intensive labels too densely packed and indiscernible from each other without picking up the can, and the shelf labels far too small to read. I think the missus and I said WTF at just about the same time. I know - cry me a river and it's the way things are. But it makes me wonder about brand identity.

When it comes to beer I am without prejudice and will cheerfully down a brew even from far off lands such as New York and California.

Honestly, the only time I "drink local" now is when I'm at the pub and not very often even then. Local beer is represented pretty well here in Pittsburgh, but since I don't go to taprooms much and a lot of local beer is derivative, I just don't bother. If someone started making kick-ass lagers, British ales, or Belgian Abbey-style beers, I'd drink more local beer, but I'm not holding my breath.

More often than not I support local breweries, either by going to local breweries or drinking local breweries at bars. especially when I'm drinking IPA's, as we have some of the best in the country

Living where I do in NJ (southern tip of Warren County), a 1 hour drive in almost any direction gets me some pretty good offerings from PA, NJ, and NY. Two hours and I can add DE and CT.

My consumption is probably in the 50-50 range. I try to support the locals and also enjoy some of the big name out of state breweries.

For me, "Local" means my county, and maybe the next county south (and, both of those counties are physically larger than Rhode Island). I even consider beers from Seattle and Vancouver BC as being regional as opposed to local.

There are significant number of breweries local to me producing high quality beers of varying styles from the current popular Juicy/Hazy IPAs but also more 'traditional' beer styles like Helles, Pilsner, Mild, etc.

My consumption of locally brewed beers has increased over the past few years and with a new small, local brewery seeming to open every month I would suspect that my consumption of locally brewed beer will further increase. At the moment I would guesstimate that I drink something like around 60% locally brewed beers. I have no issues in purchasing non-local beers when I can find them fresh.

    Cheers!

    Oh noes, I guess I'm a normie!

If I consider NJ, NYC, LI and the Hudson Valley local it's like 40%. Then maybe 40% imports and 20% National. That last one has taken the big hit in the past 5 years.

I love my local stuff but never turn down out of state beer. When local stuff is available I always have cans on hand, but I also stock up on lots of out of state/country items. So I guess I am 50/50?

I'd guess 60%? Especially this time of year, I find myself drinking mostly hops, and local guys are the best way to make sure they're the freshest they can be. There's definitely exceptions, but most of the out of state stuff I have in the cellar is heavier beer that I tend to shy away from when the weather is warm.

There are probably about a dozen breweries in a ten mile radius from my house. So much good stuff that I do not need to go elsewhere most of the time. I fill growlers and buy cans and bottles.
