One June 30, 2018 the famed Andechs am Dom just of off Munich;s Marienplatz closed its doors forever. After 24 years in business at that location, the building is slated to be renovated/rebuilt and rumor has it that an FC Bayern Fan Shop will take its place. There is speculation here in Munich that Andechser am Dom will reappear in another location, but that's just rumor at the moment...

Andechser am Dom will reopen in a new location in September 2018! The Abendzeitung reports that Sepp Kraetz has secured a new location just 100 meters from the old one. It is currently leased to the Maredo steakhouse chain, but they will be vacating the property. The kitchen of the Maerdo is almost brand new since they had a kitchen fire there about a year ago, so Kraetz won't hardly have to touch that. However, they do want to recreate the atmosphere of their former place, complete with the unique terrace. Many of you may remember that the place was almost always full, so the good news is that the new location with have a full 1/3 more seating capacity.

I am so looking forward to this. Hope they are open in time for o-fest because it was always a good spot to party after the weizen.

Too early to say for sure, but especially since he lost the Hippodrom tent, I'm sure he's quite motivated to get Andechs am Dom ready for the Wiesn crowds!

Hasn't the Hippodrome tent rotated sponsorship pretty often? Never understood what was the actual "house" brand there.

Not really - the city of Munich revoked his Wiesn concession because he was convicted of tax evasion. The new concession went to Able Gastronomie in 2014 and they built the Marstall Tent. But Spaten held on to the beer contract.

In addition to the Hippodrom at the Wiesn, he ran it also at the Fruehlingsfest (now run by his wife & daughter), and he operates the Waldwirtschaft Biergarten and Andechser am Dom. He used to be the Wirt at the Hirschgarten and he ran the Hippodrom at the Wiesn from 1995 until 2013: https://www.abendzeitung-muenchen.d...est.ca0b9da9-1a28-4984-bc1a-6d49c6c8b0f7.html

You can see all of Able's operations here: http://able-gastronomie.de/betriebe/index.php

So Kraetz is more a business manager than having a direct connection to Andechs?

This is fantastic news. That 3-meat platter + Andechser Hell is one of my favorite things in all of Germany.

For the most part, the Gastronomie people and people who run the tents are not affiliated with the breweries directly. In regards to OFest, the Wirt (person who has tent concession rights) buys beer from the brewery and re-sells it like any business.

I understood that with the Schottenhamel Tent, but doesn't (or didn't) Spaten own the Ochsen tent outright? I only deduced that because I was supposed to meet the (past) Spaten importer there at the main office.

The Ochsenbraterei serves Spaten beer, but is operated by Haberl Gastronomie: https://haberl.de/

Ochsenbraterei did a renovation to the tent and added quite a lot of seating in 2017. I don't know for certain if Haberl paid for this or if Spaten did, but Haberl led the management of the expansion. In the case of the Hippodrom, I believe the tent structure itself was owned by Sepp Kraetz because he mentioned in a newspaper article that the new concessionaire never contacted him - ostensibly to purchase his tent and/or the rights to use the Hippodrom name.

Glad to see it's staying in the area.
Always enjoyed the place, even if was just a nightcap of
a small doppelbock and some strudel.

hopefully the new location will have a better seating situation. The old one was frequently full and I got the impression that drinking without eating was frowned upon.

I'm happy to report that Andechser am Dom is back in business. They renovated a nearby property which was formerly a Maredo Stearkhouse. The interior is nicely done with a modern Bavarian style. Still not a ton of seating, but you can see photos here: https://www.andechser-am-dom.de/en/

I'll assume you've been there. I couldn't tell from the photos, were they able to save the cherub door handles? the ones with its head on one side and its ass on the other? Otherwise it looks almost as good as it used to be, nice and cozy.

The cherubs are still there and as shiny as ever.
It seems to be a little more bit more open and a bit brighter
inside, but the Edelstoff still drinks easy.
