Leisure Time Lager is a fine representation of the style, nothing to hate here.

Oh, definitely, bracingly so. But it's also got a solid malt foundation to support those hops.

"This town" Helles lager seems available in Monmouth county N.J. readily. For me it is a toss up between Alpenflo and This Town.

Bells from Michigan makes a solid Bohemian pilsner, ironically it is called "lager of the lakes"

I know that Pilsner is a branch of lager beers, I enjoy them all, especially a Bohemian pilsner in the summer. For marketing purposes "Lager of the lakes has a ring to it" but maybe saying Bohemian Pils would sell more. I was happy when I read the finer print.

As many people that claim to love Lagers and Pils, I look at the baffling BA scores. It takes a world class beer to break 90, and there's some terriffic beers that hover around 80. A piss poor IPA will hit 80, and top end obviously are at 100. So as good as the top end lagers and Pils are, I still think they're not rated to style but to hoppy PAs and IPAs.

    That’s a good question.

Pfaffenheck is definitely absent from their tap list these days. They’ll bring it out for German festivals I think. I assume it wasn’t selling well in the tap room as well.

Furth is probably on tap now. They brew it for the Fourth and keep it on during the summer now I believe. Both in the tap room and for distribution.

A lot of people simply don't know how to rate to style and probably even more troubling is that there are a lot of people rating beer that don't know what rating to style is.

I always rate to style . . . my style.

We just got Bells in Maine a few weeks ago, and I had my first Lager of the Lakes this week. Definitely a great beer, but the Rock Art has most Bohemian Pilsners beat in my opinion.

Gotcha. And Furth on the Fourth does make some sense.

If Nite Lite ends up being a good taproom seller I wonder what the hell that says about things? Probably just the lingering popularity of Lite Brite.

Same with me. I find many IPAs to be kind of "one note" but I can pick out many flavors in a good Helles.

So after seven pages of analysis, the results are in. The statement that "everyone hates lagers" has been decisively proven to be false.

    Cheers

Yeah but then they came back with Nite Life, there was a bunch of Village Lager in distro recently, their taproom currently features a Vienna and a Zwickle as well. They still want lagers in their lineup, I think Pfaffenheck just didn't really stand out in what is a fairly crowded local market for Pilsner.

This is true. Although Nite Lite is a different beast, and is not really what I think people in this thread are talking about when they say "lager".

Perhaps it's simply difficult to have a lager in your regular line-up in today's market. But I wonder if this has more to do with people not liking lagers, or just the finnicky beer geek in general. Always wanting something different.

I've said this before on these boards, and I think one of the biggest issues with lagers is they tend to have subtle flavors, and one's a consumer isn't familiar with. What's going to resonate more with your average person, Pils malt or orange juice? Melanoidin characteristics or coffee and bourbon?

Out of these three beers, which sounds more appealing to most people: Maple Bacon Coffee Porter, Oh-J, or Prima Pils?

This is why it takes time for lagers to grow on people. You need time to discern what these flavors are, and then seek out a beer that truly brings out these characteristics, which isn't always easy.

How easy is it today to stroll into your local liquor store and find a beer that tastes like orange juice?
