Good morning BAs, and welcome to yet another installment of New Beer Sunday. I know quite a few of you reading this have been around a while, but for those first time readers, this is a weekly thread that encourages you to put yourself together with a beer you haven't had before and a willingness to exercise your senses and writing skills.

Speaking of exercise and new beer, this past week I managed to get up nice and early and hit the gym a few times. Having found the drag of a day's work along with dealing with DC traffic just end up leaving me unmotivated to hit the gym after work, so I am trying a new route to better physical shape. The GF has been following a similar workout before work for a while, so I am just now starting to catch up with her.

Hitting the gym in the AM also gave me the opportunity to visit a new brewery this week with a little less guilt. The brewery, called Chubby Squirrel is only a couple weeks old, and is located in Fairfax City. A bit of a strange location in a strip mall, it looks more like a "fast casual" restaurant on the inside. The owner/operators were very friendly and seemed quite happy to see the place as busy as it was. The beer quality was in the good range, making them one of the better new small, local breweries that we've tried recently - but there is still room for improvement.

So back to you. How can you contribute to this thread? It's really not that hard at all, though it's not exactly the easiest thing you'll ever do. What we ask is for you to take some time with your aforementioned never-had-before beer and let us know about it. Give the beer the once-over - looking it up and down and describe its appearance. Sniff around it a little bit and let us know what your olfactory sense is telling you. As you consume the beer, what flavors are you getting; do the flavors remind you of other foods (or non-foods)? Is the beer as refreshing or decadent as you expected, or does something not feel right? Lastly, would you recommend the beer to all of us? or maybe a subset? or should we really all just avoid it?

Also, please feel free to include any other information about the beer and your experience with it for us to geek out on. Thanks for taking the effort to share a small part of your beer experience with us. And with that, I flip over the sign and disengage the lock to the front door of another New Beer Sunday. Welcome all, we're open for business.

[IMG] Poured into a 13 oz Snulip glass canned on 7/04/18. Pours like a well shaken glass of pineapple orange juice, leaving nice thick rings of lace all around the sides of the glass, with exceptional retention.4.75

Smell papaya, passionfruit, pineapple, and just a little hint of grapefruit rind. 4.75

Taste follows tropical frontvto back, incredible one dimensional balance and how is this juice bomb only 5.1% ABV really world class! 5

Mouthfeel is soft with just the right amount of life, not dry but a stickyness from a ton of dry hopping, and once again this gem drinks closer to 6.5 or 7%. 5

Overall this one brakes the mold, I am scoring a tad higher because of what the have accomplished with a sessionable NEAPA. Honestly nothing short of exceptional and they truly have earned the insane hype surrounded there craft. 4.75

New Beer Sunday: A Fruit/Vegetable beer.

Mornin’ NBSers with a special signal to seekers of a suitable sippable for sunny, sweltering summer days. Also a special salutation to @cjgiant for signaling the start of a Sunday session.

Today’s weather is expected to be a bit cloudy with an occasional shower and thunderstorm in the area. While temperatures are expected to be in the high 80s. the humidity is expected to be high enough to give us a “feels like” high in the middle to low 90s.

This morning’s new beer is Coolcumber from Wicked Weed.

As usual, my review, subject to revision until I finish the beer, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30581/94325/?ba=drtth#review

The Aromas/Flavors are mostly about some basil, juniper and cucumber There’s also a bit of sweetness from the malt and some light grassy bitterness in the background. Although the basil and juniper begin fade during the finish, the cucumber and light bitterness become a bit more noticeable in the clean crisp ending. This seems a beer well suited for today’s weather and as such it’s nicely drinkable.

    Cheers, all!

Morning all! Thanks @cjgiant for the excellent start. Hitting the gym is a great topic for the opener, it is something I definitely need to do, not necessarily at a gym, but more exercise and less bad carbs consumption is something I think about now I am at the heaviest weight of my life. Gonna be taking a break from beer for a while, and getting out mushroom and wild edible plant picking much more often for exercise.

But that break and exercise program won't be starting today.

I have my boys... err, men, here visiting, so we will see if I get a chance to open and review the Suarez beer, Local Boy, to which I have been looking forward. See ya then.

Hi you all and Hiya Craig @cjgiant . Thanks for getting us started today. I am so excited
I want to make all kinds of exclamations of joy and surprise. Thank you @2beerdogs Happy New Berliner Sunday!

I have a wonderful opportunity to try the lineup of a well known brewer. I am so excited, Thank you very much. With the sour stout pork and potatoes. With the berliners, let me see . . . The sour blonde with blueberries is the one I want to try the most. This glass fits one beer. Cheers!

I wanted my first pairing to be a salad. It's been so hot. The Berliner is refreshing and tart. A lovely style. This brewer is known for innovation, you might even say flavors. From stouts to saisons I have seen all kinds of ingredients in Bruery beers. Terreux focuses on farmhouse style sour beer. I have the rare opportunity to have their Berliner with three different fruits. Peach, cranberry orange and raspberry. Also I have a sour tripel and a sour blonde from them so I am excited to see their definition on those styles. In cooking lemon is the watchword so these beers should be perfect with light summer dishes that feature citrus.

    [IMG] [IMG] [IMG]

With the beets and beet green salad I wanted the raspberry berliner. My dressing was simple lemon and dijon. The naan crackers had cumin in them. I did not use too much salt and a bit of honey to sweeten the dressing. So pleasing to the eye with the creamy just tangy home made buttermilk ricotta. I thought the sweet raspberrries would pair easily with the beets and their earthy sweetness.

Lentils and Beet Greens with Ricotta and Cashews

Pours hazy and pink with a tinged head that lasted surprisingly well but fell away to nothing. Opaque. Nose is ripe fresh raspberries and cracker. No real hop scents. No diacetyl no DMS. The fruit is so vibrant you can almost smell the seeds on the raspberries. Drinks crisply and sour with a good acidic punch. Bubbly and effervescent. Cracker malt gives way to the fresh raspberry and then leaves your mouth watering as it finishes sour and with hearty bubbles. Graceful and swift on the palate although it explodes with fruit flavor. Dry, graceful and has an earthy side without hops to speak of and a firm malt.

Happy Sunday everyone. Thank you so much Derek. Cheers everyone!

Somewhat hazy bronze color with beige cap and lacing.

I am not sufficiently familiar with rhubarb to say whether or not this smells like rhubarb but it does smell of something very pleasant supported by strawberry.

Taste like a light, fresh, pleasant, almost herbaceous mixture of vegetable and fruit with strawberry popping in and out adding a high note here and there.

    Medium texture with balancing carbonation.

I like the way this both drinks and finishes dry which is a welcome step away from the sweetness sometimes found in fruit theme beers. This is not a one trick pony, it's fusion of flavors that works beautifully.

Thanks to @cjgiant for the thought-provoking start to New Beer Sunday. My exercise program has been nearly non-existent. I golf (walking) in the summer, X-country ski in the winter, and treadmill sporadically. I rationalize this by saying how busy I am at work, and that my weight has stayed the same over the past 50 years. Now that I'm retired, the work excuse doesn't hold water, plus I'll need to do something with all my new free time. I see a lot of hikes in my future, and I expect to be more regularly active.

All that talk of exercise has made me thirsty. And I have a world-class beer to slake that thirst, courtesy of @DoctorZombies. Dave was exceedingly generous when we and our wives met for lunch. One of his gifts was Hunahpu's Imperial Stout, a beer I have been coveting for a long time. This beer is brewed by Cigar City, and it is the 2018 edition. From the label:
"Central to Mayan mythology is the story of twin brothers named Xbalanque and Hunahpu, the Hero Twins. After the Twins' father was murdered by evil deities from Xibalba, his corpse became a cacao tree that spawned our Two Heros. Epic adventures followed, culminating in a journey to Xibalba to avenge their father's death. Vanquishing their enemies handily, the Heros ascended into the heavens where they became the sun and the moon."

In a snifter, at nearly room temperature, the beer was black with a one-finger cinnamon colored head.
Aroma of chocolate, cinnamon, and pepper.
The taste is where this beer shines. Intense dark chocolate. Cinnamon. The chilis are very noticeable, but are complementary and not intrusive.
This is a wonderful big, bold beer. It more than lives up to its hype.
    Thank you so much, Dave.

    New Beer Sunday: A Gose

Mornin’ NBSers with a special signal to seekers of a Gose suitable for summer weather. (Aren’t most of them?)

For a variety of reasons associated with some mindless heavy lifting (and no trip to the gym :slight_frown:) in the hot humid weather, today is one or those rare summer mornings when I’m allowing myself more than one beer. So this morning’s second new beer is the Limey Gose from Victory Brewing.

As usual, my review, subject to revision until I finish the beer, can be found here:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/345/238580/?ba=drtth#review

The Aromas/Flavors are mostly about the lime and tartness with some salt and wheat in the background. The tartness is stronger than the sweetness and the saltiness remains in the background during the finiish. I’d say this beer can be refreshing enough but once the six pack is finished I’ll probably not be buying it again given that I prefer the Dogfish Head Sea Quench.

    Cheers, all!

    Caution! Low Bridge ahead!!

I live a few miles away from Valley Forge National Park and within the park is a neat looking covered bridge (Knox Covered Bridge):

This bridge and another nearby covered bridge of Rapps Dam Covered Bridge have been closed over recent years due to damage from vehicles (trucks). The good news is that the Knox Covered Bridge is presently open (until the next damaging accident?)

Which brings us to today’s new beer of Root Down Low Bridge Lager. Did Root Down name this beer after these local covered bridges? Hmm!?!

For those of you unfamiliar with Root Down Brewing below is a nice paragraph by the Philadelphia Inquirer food critic, Craig LaBan, on Root Down:

"A new brewpub opens seemingly every month in this town, and Root Down is one of the newest. Set inside a deceptively large warehouse space of a converted Hires Root Beer plant, owner and ex-Marine Mike Hamara has paired with head brewer and Sly Fox alum Steve Bischoff to create a solid opening portfolio covering a broad range of styles, from a crisp pilsner to an ever-evolving IPA (Bine), and a "Cosmic" series of Imperial stouts like the barrel-aged Woodie that impressed me. A smoker turns out a BBQ picnic from the kitchen."

On the can it lists 5.1% ABV.

From the other popular beer reviewing website: “Brewed with all German malt, and Saphire, Tettnang and Mt Hood hops.”

Well, I am a fan of German (Pilsner?) Malt and all of those hops listed so I proclaim: “Let’s drink!”

Served in my Firestone Walker Pivo Pils glass:

    Appearance:

Golden yellow colored with a BIG rocky white head. This beer has good head retention forming a Belgian Lace as the beer is consumed.

    Aroma:

Lots going on here. An enticing combination of bready (from the malt) and herbal/spicy (from the hops).

    Taste:

The flavor very much follows the nose. The bready Pilsner malt flavor is at the fore but with some herbal/spicy hop flavors as well. There is a moderate bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

Medium bodied, moderate carbonation and a dry finish.

    Overall:

This beer is very, very good; I enjoyed drinking it! This beer had an appealing bready maltiness which is pleasantly balanced by the herbal/spicy flavors from the hops. When I was finished drinking this can I really, really wished I had a second one to drink. This beer has the quality that Germans refer to as süffig (drinkable).

    Cheers to Covered Bridge beers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks to @cjgiant for kicking things off. I like to think that I exercise regularly. I normally play on at least one soccer team in California, but had to take a break this year. Will start that back up in September. Right now I am training for a marathon (had a major set back last September with a femoral stress fracture). I am hoping to run one in SoCal in October, assuming I remain injury free. I ran 18 miles this morning, and I'm kicking back with a beer.

I have been eyeing this one for a while. I am a huge fan of Hair of the Dog beers. In fact, this was one of the first breweries I jumped into when I got into craft beer a long time ago. A great friend of mine took me to a bottle shop in Corvalis, OR about 16 years ago and stocked me up on HotD stuff. I was hooked. @Lingenbrau is lucky being so close to them! This beer is Binkie Claws, aged in Woodford barrels ('18 edition). It's simply an aged Doggie Claws, but brewed collaboratively with De Molen.

This was poured from fridge temp. From my experience with Hair of the Dog beers, I expected no/little carbonation. I was wrong! This pours a nice a nice very dark brown with a respectable amount of tan head. Nose is really nice, with notes of caramel, port, cherries, brown sugar, roasted malts, and honey. Taste is phenomenal, and really unique. I definitely get the Doggie Claws, but with a huge amount of rich toffee and maple. Tastes like a wonderful English barley wine with great notes from the bourbon barrel aging. Dark fruits, figs, maple, brown sugar, and some resin. The hops don't come through nearly as much as with Doggie Claws, but I'm a huge fan of the English barley wine style. Mouthfeel is thick, creamy, and robust. Overall, I am so glad I picked one of these up, and will try to grab one more.

    Defiance Brewing Golden Giant IPA
    6.8% ABV

I just found a new pet peeve: not being able to photograph the beer label in one shot. Oh well. This is my 15th different beer from Defiance and I think 10 of them have been IPAs. I have a general admiration for the brewery in Hays, Kansas so let’s see how this new brew stacks up:

Look: Probably the most opaque ipa I’ve had, it’s a dirty dark straw yellow color. The head is white and frothy like latte cream, it settles to a thick film and thick collar. Lacing is random arcs and turbulent lines of foam.

Aroma: Very fresh yet light pine notes lead into fragrant sweet fruits like mango and apricot. On the back end, citrus and spicy hops linger.

Taste: Very straight forward with a piney, evergreen wood beginning that turns straight to citrus — orange and grapefruit zest. The beer finishes only slightly bitter and a bit tangy.

    Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, slightly dry.

Overall: A little bit of pine and a lot of citrus without huge amounts of bitterness.

16oz canned 6/15/18 (1 month ago) poured into a nonic imperial pint glass at fridge temp, no ABV listed on can. The beer pours dense very dark brown with rusty brown head. The head recedes to a thin ring and leaves no lacing. The aroma is strong, even cold, with coffee and baker's chocolate. The taste super dark coffee and really dark, like burnt, malt. The bitterness seems to come completely from the dark malts and coffee and the taste never goes too bitter or sweet. Mouthfeel is medium to thin bodied, less than average in carbonation and dry in the finish. Overall, very good. Lots of dark roasted malt and coffee flavor packed into a low ABV (5.2% according to BA) porter.

Cheers all & enjoy the new beer in your glass today!

Woke up way too early this morning(4AM) and decided to have this instead of coffee in hopes of going back to bed for a couple of hours. It worked, hopefully I can get back on my normal schedule of sleep over the next couple of days.

Pours a very dark brown/nearly black with a thin tan head that didn't last very long.
Smell is dark roasted malt, dark chocolate, some coffee.
Taste follows with the dark chocolate and roasty malt. A touch of dark fruit flavors seem to sweeten it a bit, not overly but just enough to provide balance.
Medium to full body, good carb level.
Overall a tasty stout that hides the 11% quite well.
This one was a quite a welcome from the stouts in Ireland and elsewhere over the last two weeks. I believe today I'm going to get out and find a nice juicy DIPA, those seemed to be nonexistent everywhere we went while we were out of town.

I see we have a nice little crowd here early in the day. The staff is bustling about...

A nice walk never hurts, and outdoor cardio work is always preferred. The gym allows me to lift some weights and usually once I’ve done that, since I’m there, might as well do a couple miles on the treadmill.

I’ve never been able yet to give myself any significant time off from beer, though sometimes I feel it would be as good an idea for a palate reset as much as the potential health benefits.

Good job maintaining a steady weight. When I used to golf I preferred walking (and carrying my bag). As I got a little away from the game I still thoroughly enjoy walking, but with a pull cart. A fair number of the more upscale courses around here aren’t suited for walking. Luckily as my game has faded to obscurity, I’m even happier to hit my local muni for a good, spoiled walk.

Good morning all! Our summer New England road trip in the RV is winding down with a week in Avondale, a Charleston SC suburb, before heading back to Florida briefly. The weather is hot and humid, but I have a ‘fridge full of beer, so I’m a happy camper!

Today’s newbeer is “Luscious”, a British style stout I pickup up at The Alchemist when we visited Stowe VT about 2 weeks ago. The brewery’s visitor center is very well set up, and Mrs. Z (a retired professor of advertising/creative) was impressed by the layout and graphics there.

The beer pours an inky black with dark brown rocky foam at 58 degrees; there is clarity underneath a long retained cap that leaves a solid ring and moderate minus lacing; decent legs upon swirl. 4.5

Roast malt and nutty/coffee nose; some floral/earthy hops too. 4.0

Bitter roast malt right up front, followed by bittersweet dark chocolate, roasted nuts and coffee beans, toasted grains and pumpernickel. 4.25

Medium plus body; creamy tongue coating; moderate minus carbonation; no warmth from the 9.2% ABV. 4.25

Overall an enjoyable stout; the bitter roast linger is long and tasty, and not smoky or char; there is an underlying sweetness that balances the roasty nut/coffee flavors; the feel is fullish with a very pleasing tongue coating. 4.25

Tasty beer! A little more bitter roast than I prefer, but I really liked the smooth tongue coating. Definitely recommend.

We might go to a brunch with family, or we may just hang here on the marsh and bird watch today. Have a great Sunday, and Cheers!

Next up for me is Franky Four Fingers from Monyo Brewing in Budapest. This is my first time having anything from Hungary, and and was pretty excited to see a big barley wine (my favorite style).

Poured from fridge temp into a snifter. Pours a nice dark brown with light brown head. Nose is caramel and dark fruit. Not a ton of complexity. Getting a bit of orange peel as well. Taste is really interesting. Getting a hint of mint and spice upfront, which is unusual for a barley wine. Definitely picking up some toffee and dark fruit (figs), but also getting a bit of menthol and cough syrup. Maybe even a hint of soy sauce. A bit of pine, wheat, and funk as well. A slight bitterness on the back end - reminds me of tree sap. Mouthfeel is a bit dry and surprisingly thin for 13%. I was expected a deeper malt flavor given that it's an English barley wine. Overall, a pretty good barley wine, but not close to my favorite of this style.
