Cork plopped out without any vigor like a geezer in need of erectile medication and had me worried about carbonation and if I aged this incorrectly too long. Thank goodness it poured with nice carbonation and small lasting vanilla latte head. Appearance is like straight sewage water. Aroma is straight up pine forest followed by vanilla and maple. Taste is first bitter piney hops still, followed by some smokey charred vanilla and light maple on the tongue at end. Almost like kissing a stripper who has cherry lipstick on and smells of Victoria Secret perfume, but has been taking drags all night long in the club. Great experience in my book! Mouth feel is spot on, again like a gentleman's dancer who knows how to use the perfect amount of tongue. Overall it was an experience to be remembered, like ones first visit to Spearment Rhino in Vegas.

Happy Sunday all. Unlike our host I am absolutely hopeless at exercising first thing in the morning. I do, luckily, live very near a huge and beautiful forest though where I take my dog at least every other day for 2 to 4 mile hikes in the late afternoon. I've been doing that for years which keeps my legs in good shape, but my upper body was feeling flabby enough that I joined a gym this spring for the first time in ages. I've already started tapering off in how often I go so hopefully I can at least tread water somewhere above zero visits per month.

The hiking keeps me in good shape numbers wise (BP, cholesterol etc.) but my wife and I love to cook and eat and drink, so for the life of me I haven't ever been able to shed the 30ish extra pounds that snuck up on me in my early 30s (15 years ago). What's that you say? Cut down on beer? Come again? I couldn't quite hear you.

    Squirrel!!!!!!!

Today i'm excited to finally try the much talked about Alpenflo Helles from Six Point which clocks in at a drinkable 4.9% ABV. To cut to the chase, this beer fucking rocks.

It pours a handsomely clear golden straw color with a small but persistent tiny bubbled white head. The smell is very clean and mild with some wheaty-ness sitting somewhere between biscuits and bread. Perhaps a little straw too. As it warms there's a little yeasty doughiness as well. Taste follows the nose and continues to be very mild and clean tasting while also having a great, full mouthfeel. There is nothing remotely thin or watered down about this beer. The finish is super dry and, again, clean with all the lingering taste in the front of the mouth rather than the back. There was some talk in the dedicated thread about whether this was a pils-esque Helles but the lack of hop bite on the back end separates this pretty firmly from a pilsner in my opinion.

I love the Pilsner and helles styles but I'm also pretty fussy about them. In particular I tend to be very sensitive to sulfur flavors which pop up more often than i'd like. This is one of the cleanest tasting and drinkable beers I've ever had. Fantastic job by Six Point on this one.

    Cheers!

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the end of the weekend once again. My parents came up yesterday for a short visit, so we had dinner and hung out for a bit. They stayed in a hotel up the street for the night and stopped by earlier before heading off(stopping at the Dixieland flea market first). I'll be going down there next weekend for my Grandfathers bday as well. Normal Sunday as usual with bottle returns, laundry, and a grocery run again. My parents brought me a new foreman grill and convection oven, so gave that a whirl. Made a big new-beer post-birthday haul on Friday after work, so I will be busy for a few minutes.

Very nice spiced NEIPA. Great head retention/thick lacing on the glass. Flavors of big lightly tart lime, ginger, vodka, grapefruit, tangerine, lemon, peach, pineapple, apricot, melon, citrus peel/rind, peppercorn, and pine hops; with moderate wheat, cracker, biscuit dough malts; and herbal, floral, grassy hop/spice earthiness. Similar/muted aromas. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, grassy bitterness; peppery ginger spiciness; and light fruit tang/tartness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body; creamy/bready/grainy malts, some sticky/resinous/rindy hops/spice, and light acidic/tang in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing bitter/spicy dryness, minimal hop/spice astringency. Very smooth, not overly aggressive, minimal warming 7.3%. It's a unique one, but I like it. Great balance of juicy/dank/earthy hops, vodka soaked limes, ginger, and bready malts. Minimal residual sweetness from lingering dryness. Probably Columbus/Amarillo hops or something. Complementing resins to the spice. 3.88
    [IMG]

Great gose! Great head retention and soapy lacing for the style. Aromas and flavors of big juicy/tart/tangy blueberries, cucumber, fruit skin, lemon, lime, peach, pear, melon, red/green apple, white grape, coriander, sea salt, hay, and grass; with moderate wheat, cracker, white bread dough malts; light pepper/lacto funk, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tartness, fruit tang, and light coriander spiciness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body; creamy/bready/grainy wheat, some lactic acid/fruit tang, and light sticky/salinity in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing acidic/tangy fruit dryness, no pucker/astringency. Very flavorful/refreshing, 5%. Not overly lactic or salty. Well balanced authentic juicy fruits, Lacto, spice, salt, and pale/wheat malts. Liked this more than the watermelon I had a couple days ago. It had some lingering spice astringency, which was not present here. This is spot on style stuff! 4

New Beer #2. Tidal Offering, a 9.9% Wee Heavy from Czig Meister Brewing in Hackettstown, NJ. It's a wee bit thin in the body but it hits the spot on a rainy Sunday. Here's my full review:

    3.97/5 rDev 0%
    look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75

Poured from pint bottle into Czig Meister pint glass. It pours a hazy ruby color with orange hues, and a thin, khaki-colored head that dissipated quickly leaving a thin sheen of of like colored lacing. The nose features roasted malt, caramel, and earthy peat. It opens with the expected sweet caramel and dark fruit but quickly becomes smoky and bitter with notes of peat and tobacco smoke. It has all the classic elements of a Wee Heavy. It finishes with more bitterness than I expected, which is a positive. The mouth feel is a little thin; I wish it were more creamy and viscous. The carbonation is mild and the 9.9% ABV is barely noticeable. Overall, it's tasty but the flavors and feel are not at the level of Dirty Bastard, Scotty Karate, Claymore or Traquair.

    Cheers, NBS compadres!

Smell is pineapple, mango, mandarin orange, and some grapefruit rind. 4

Taste follows pineapple a tad more assertive, orange, mango, and a very balanced hit of grapefruit. 4

Mouthfeel is pretty big, plenty of life, a tad dry, and at 7.7% ABV goes down easy. 4

Overall this is a very nice beer, for fans of East and West DIPA lovers. 4

Hello NBS crew! Hope everyone is well today. It's very warm and humid in Southern WI and we are taking it easy while celebrating my youngest daughters 7th birthday.

Today I am enjoying a juice IPA from Brewproject, Pineapple Mango IPA. Poured 16oz can into snifter. It is a dirty orange color with a 2 finger dirty white head that slowly fades into a ring and leaves behind some lacing. Aroma is very juicy tropical fruit with dominating pineapple and mango scents. Flavor is fruit forward with pineapple, mango. Very juicy with some tropical hops and light malt and low bitterness. Feel is medium with soft carbonation and very juicy. This definitely has juice added and it is delicious!

Ok, time for my last beer from @pretzyl04 - a friend who has started his craft beer journey focusing on his enjoyment of stouts. He mentioned that there weren't a whole lot of those available to him along the way during his European trip. He did mention going to Dunkels as a substitute. I forget if he mentioned this was one he had or not.

As stated in my review, I found this a little more earthy (including earthy spice notes) than I expected. This Sanwald Weizen Dunkel (in the DB as Dunkel Weizen, I presumed) does meet the basic requirements listed by BA for the style. The malt aspects are also just a little too muted for my liking. In the end, the beer was drunk without great enjoyment but also without any disappointment

Great fruited cream ale. Good head retention, minimal lacing. Aromas and flavors of big lightly tart/tangy lemon juice, zest, cracker, corn, and white bread; with some herbal, grassy, light peppery hops. Mild herbal/grassy/zesty bitterness and citrus tartness on the finish. Medium-high carbonation, light-medium body, and moderately crisp/clean finishing. Bready/grainy malts, some sticky hops/zest, and light acidity in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing tart/bitter/carbonated dryness. Very flavorful/refreshing, 4.5%. Not watery at all. Very clean and not yeasty. Great balance of vibrant citrus and clean pale malt/corn flavors; with mild earthy hop balance. I really liked that this kept the base style character intact, and added the fruit on top of it. It doesn't feel like a shandy like I expected. 3.97
    [IMG]

Fantastic milkshake DIPA. Awesome head retention and lasting lacing on the glass. Aromas and flavors of huge juicy/lightly tart/tangy strawberries, fruit skin, peach, pineapple, apricot, lemon, grapefruit, orange juice, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, guava, citrus peel/zest, and light pepper/pine hops; with balanced vanilla, whipped cream, wheat, white bread dough sweetness; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Very mild pine, citrus peel/zest, herbal, grassy, peppery bitterness; and berry tang/tartness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; very creamy/silky/bready/grainy wheat/lactose mouthfeel. Light sticky hops, and slight resins/rinds near the end of the glass. Lightly increasing lingering bitter dryness, no hop astringency. Insanely drinkable, minimal warming 8.6%. Definitely way better than the mixed berry was. Super juicy and lightly dank fruit/mosaic hops; perfect lactose/vanilla/malt backbone. Not overly sweet/heavy from lingering bitter dryness. Will be getting some more. 4.23

Hey all. Thanks @cjgiant for the kickoff. So I started my life as a chef/cook after 17 years Tuesday. I prepped the whole menu solo in a day and a half and walked in at 430 for a 500 pm service. Craziest thing Ive done and now Im old. So I was pretty happy with that. So weds was ok. Thursday dead. Friday decent and Saturday decent. I had no time to work on presentation, cooking process or mise en place. I called it a win. People loved the food. But the owner, like many, has no patience. Saturday he says hes going on vacation and next week he wants fish n chips, steak tips, fried calamari and stuffies on the menu. Love the stuff but its not my style. So back we gonto square one.
Going local with a new brewery today.
    Newport Craft Brewing Unaware NEIPA.
Pours a hazy golden orange with a half inch off white head. Little retention and almost zero lacing. Looks flat. Color is nice but the rest meh.
Aroma is sweet tangerine/orange, some gooseberry, pine resin. Not huge in this department as well.
Taste lots of citrus, some white grape, mango, lots of piney resinous notes.
Finishes with lots of hop resins on the tongue with some solid bitterness. The carbonation seems medium to higher which is strange due to the head retention.
Im not sure if its palate burn but I dont have alot to say about this brew. Its got galaxy and citra characteristics but nothing to really set it apart. Its a standard take on a very crowded NEIPA category. Not a bad beer just nothing that stands out. You could drink a few at 6.7% on a hot day. Worth a try I would say.
One of my dishes thats coming of the menu next week for fish n chips.
Pan seared local scallops, local mushroom risotto (hen of the woods, golden oyster, crimini) rainbow chard, pinot noir syrup, mushroom essence.
    Cheers. Have a great week.

Salutations, NBS. Work is done, and I am beyond ready to sit down with the World Cup finale and a beer. So away we go!

Today I'm drinking the Bruery's Tart of Darkness with black currants, 2018 edition, 6.2% abv. It's my first time having any of the ToDs.

Pours brownish dark purple. Thin brownish lilac head dies quickly. Near-black and opaque with purple highlights. Not much lacing, but none expected.

Smells of tart dark berries, spiky sourness, and oak tannins. Sweet tart pie filling with hints of leather and tobacco.

Tart and puckering sour taste up front. Dark berry sweetness and tart jammy flavors mellow to a slight roast on the finish. Tannic and dry.

Medium bodied, well carbonated. A nice, complex sipper that really smooths out as it's drunk down.

Begins more sour than stout. I initially poured 2/3 of the bottle and drank about half, and found it a really good jammy sour. After adding the last third of the bottle, the tobacco and leather flavors came more to the forefront. I never got much roastiness or coffee or anything that really said stout to me. A delicious dark berry sour no less.

This looks exactly like what’s inside the bottle - raspberries, blackberries, and cranberries mashed together, watery look on the edges, and a head that disappears like hail on the ground in Texas.

The funky Brett aroma is forefront on the nose, with the three fruits in the background, and just a hint of wine barrels (my assumption).

The fruit flavors are much more forward on the taste, and the Brett adds to those flavors. If the mouthfeel was a little brighter, this would be outstanding, but it is still worthy of a spin.
