    Hello New Beer Sunday!!!

Another long day at work done. Is that all I ever do? Sadly, it seems so. One small reward for all the hours I work is a beer after work. Tonight's beer is a large one, and it wasn't the one I was thinking of doing all day at work. I changed my mind when I opened the fridge door up, and saw this beauty.

After Dark from Bad Habit Brewing in St. Joe, MN. It is a barrel aged chocolate milk stout. Clocks in at 9.5%.
Bottle #302. It is aged in rye bourbon barrels from Panther Distillery

This is a beautiful beer. Really rich, and it's getting even more so as it warms up even more. My most recent sip at 63 was even richer than my first at 52 - yeah, I'm nerding out with the digital thermometer. I'd say it should be consumed in the 60s. Really brings everything out so well. I'll be sipping on this for a while, and enjoying every sip. I did update my review based off this info, and I'm glad I'm taking my time on it. So worth taking this beer slow.

Pours pitch black with a minimal, tan head. Some carbonation bubbles rising on the side of the glass.
The nose is rich with chocolate, lactose, a hint of vanilla, and notes of barrel aging.
Taste - and drinking at 52 F - An explosion of lactose and chocolate up front, that is mellow and smooth at the same time. On the back it turns into a barrel flavor. As it warms up, it gets more rich and creamy. At 63 F it is really deep and creamy. I'd say it is ideal in the 60-70 F range. It also gets a bit less harsh from the barrel, and more smooth as it warms up.
Body is decent, though a bit thinner than I'd expect. There is a bit of harsh alcohol burn that lingers in my palate from the barrel aging.
Well, this is a treat - a barrel aged chocolate milk stout. Damn interesting, and tasty, beer.

Likely done after this, but who knows. If not, see you all next Sunday, and throughout the week in WBAYDN.

Have you tried imgur? It works super well for me and doesn't seem to have as frequent of technical issues as the other hosts *knock on wood*.

No, but maybe it is time to. Might be a DB maintenance or something.

    Greetings All:

I have been absent from NBS for several weeks/months. Mostly because I don't run across a lot of new beers these days. But I drove over to Odessa on Friday for some golf and ran across this one at the local grocery.

    Hop Farmer's Daughter.

I found it interesting because I visited with the brewery founder on many occasions and he was not a fan of hoppy beers. I believe a son has taken over the brewery, and well, you have to have an IPA these days.

It's not bad, like the Fireweed with a hop presence. For some reason my addition is not showing on the site. I'll figure that out later.

    Meanwhile, Happy Trails!

Happy New Beer Sunday! Today I'm trying Finback Something Mosaic. A Mosaic-hopped NEIPA.

It looks like orange juice. Opaque dull yellow with a small foamy white head.

It smells like ripe apricot, yellow peach, mango, pineapple, tangerine, and a hint of dough.

The taste follows the nose. Tons of ripe stone fruit. Apricot and fuzzy yellow peach for days. Also some under ripe mango, tart pineapple; soft, floury dough-like malt, orange zest, and a hint of earthy dankness. No bitterness whatsoever. Slightly chalky and astringent from the yeast, but not as bad as some NEIPAs. Not a major detractor.

The mouthfeel is thick and creamy, like a good hefeweizen. Moderately carbonated.

All in all, a great NEIPA. Just slightly flawed, but overall a really good NEIPA.

Hey all, I’ll be checking in with 2 or 3 new ones tonight. First up is a beer I had earlier today, Destihl Flanders-style Red which is part of their Wild Sour Series.

    Here’s my review-

    3.77/5 rDev -0.8%
    look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75

    Canned 3/20/18

Look- Opaque amber-tinted brown liquid with a 1 finger off-white head that receded to a thin ring after a few minutes

Smell- sort of a musty, mild, apple cider vinegar along with a slight bready note

Taste- getting that apple cider vinegar sourness up front, but it's quickly tempered by a sort of bready dryness that keeps the sourness in check

Feel- medium-light bodied and very dry finish

Overall- relatively simple and easy drinking flanders-style red ale with a nice dry sourness

As always, it’s been great checking out what you all have to say about your new beers. And thanks @lordofthewiens for kicking things off this morning. Cheers!

I believe this one ended up being my nightcap.

Pours black with a finger of khaki head that didn't last very long.
Smells of dark roasty malts, dark chocolate, mild whiskey presence.
Taste is dark roasted malt, coffee, chocolate, caramel, toffee. Barrel notes are a bit faint.
On the thin side of medium bodied.
Overall a quite tasty stout, a bit fuller body would make it great.

    Yes, indeed.

Today’s beer is East End Brewing Co - Gratitude:

This beer is #10 on the BeerAdvocate top rated American barley wine list. Beers #1-#9 are all bourbon barrel aged beers or similar, so in my mind, this is the highest rated proper American barley wine on BeerAdvocate.

In a recent thread about some "bad" beer names, posters were asking @Ahonky what he thought was actually a good name. I'd submit this beer as an example of the good. Gratitude. Simple but unique. This beer has been brewed annually as a "thank you" to the supporters of the brewery. If they were giving it away, it would be truly appropriate, but despite my cynicism, it still is a great name for a beer like this. The drawing of the bird on the label changes each year as far as I know... and the entire package truly feels classy... stupid wax and all.

The beer is a stunner. Fantastic head (something I love on a relatively fresh barley wine). Beautiful vivid chestnut color. Clarity changed as I was drinking it, but at it's clear best it was a pretty beer.

The smell is of alcohol. The malt is very rich here, but not off-putting. It's luxurious. Tastes of burnt caramel / creme brulee, but it manages to not be too sweet. This aspect is a big success. There's a definite hoppiness coming through and some decent bitterness, but the flavor of the malt sits on top of any specific hop flavor. There's grapefruit pith for folks who want to dig for it. The beer is a little harsh in the throat. The alcohol presence is the Achilles heel, but it's by no means a deal breaker.

Just going from bad memory and imperfect comparisons, this one reminds me of Bell's Third Coast Old Ale and maybe the new Thomas Hardy's. Enjoyable beer. Cheers.

You can also post with imgur without getting that branded border. For example, my post above is with imgur. Don't ask me to explain it or take you through the steps. I'm not qualified. But I believe there have been posts here that dove into that from folks way more qualified than me.

    Good evening late night NBS
Worked all day and currently marking off style #84 Faro
    [IMG]
12oz green capped and corked bottle poured into a teku glass at fridge temp, no ABV listed on label. Coded L:BF220FA. The beer pours bright in a rusty color similar to apple juice. The head is khaki and recedes to a thin cap. The aroma is musty in a horse barn type way with apple cider vinegar notes alongside. The taste is kinda really sour, at least to my palate, with some sweetness coming through late. There are some definite tart cherry notes although no fruit is used. Mouthfeel is thin bodied, highly carbonated and very dry. Overall? I'm ok with giving it a try, but this style is not for me.

No golf talk for me. I gave up 16 years ago when my son was born and I realized that golf spoiled what could have been a relaxing walk. Cheers all!

Just finished another new one, a Czech Pilsner from Bear Republic-

    Double Aught Pilsner

This was a bit of a let-down due to an unpleasant green apple, almost soapy note in the nose. Fortunately, it was pretty much absent from the taste so it wasn’t unenjoyable.

    BA Review-
    3.51/5 rDev -4.4%
    look: 4 | smell: 3 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

Can't read the BB date on this one now, but I'm pretty sure it was 9/18.

Look- crystal clear vibrant golden color with a white head that sticks around; spotty lacing

Nose- getting a tart green apple, almost soapy note that's predominant, but under that I can detect some soft floral notes and light bread

Taste- starts off with a nice, rich, bready malt, along with some floral hops, just a hint of the green apple and a mild bitterness

Feel- medium-light bodied, pretty heavy for a pilsner. Nonetheless, it's still refreshing with a semi-dry and somewhat bitter finish.

Overall- decent tasting pilsner, but the apple/soapy note in the nose was off-putting.

Having hand of the queen, a barleywine by ommegang. Seems a little thin in the body and not as much raisiny flavor as I expect, but it's very drinkable. Not a style I drink a lot of, but on the lower side of the ones I've tried.

I'm pretty sure that you click on the little camera at bottom center in your phone. On a computer it is top left. Also, FYI if you don't want your pictures visible to people outside this thread (on imgur) there is an option to make it "hidden" when you upload it.
