I was over in Winthrop last week, at Old Schoolhouse, a favorite spot I've been to several times. I had a Ruud Awakening, their standard IPA that they've been brewing for several years. I've had it before, but not for a while. And you know what, Ruud Awakening is great, and it's worth revisiting again and again.

That got me thinking. We beer geeks often want to chase the newest brew, looking for new stuff that we haven't had before. In the process, I think we skip over the tried-and-true, the excellent beers that have everything going for them, except that they aren't new.

So what are your Old Favorites? I'm looking for beers that belong in the top tier of beers, and have been around for several years.

    Some of my old favorites:
    Boneyard RPM
    Logsdon Seizoen Bretta
    Deschutes Obsidian
    DFH Palo Santo Marron
    Tank 7
    Ten Fidy
    Ruud Awakening

(PS. Looking at my list, I notice that I didn't put any barrel aged beers on here. Somehow those beers, even the ones that have been around for quite a while, seem to fit a special one-off category. No one is going to overlook KDS or Abyss just because Fremont and Deschutes have been making them for years.)

Old Schoolhouse IPAs are always a treat. They have been putting out some fantastic ones lately.

With a geographical change and the introduction of Bodhi, Georgetown’s Lucille is not as prevalent in my life as it used to be. When I stumble upon it now, I get that same feeling you did with Ruud Awakening, it’s a Hall of Famer for me.

These are the beers that I have bought the most of over the last 10 years. Whenever I recycle there will be some of these in the garage.

As it happens, I'm wearing an old-school Winthrop Brewing (which was the name back when ) t-shirt today.

I'm also a big fan of OSB. And, many other of our less hyped breweries. And, after yesterday, I'm adding San Juan Brewing to that list.

I was over at a friend's house on Sunday helping with some yard work and had a can of Hale's Supergoose. Just as good as it was years ago.

I think Jubelale is my favorite all time beer. I get giddy every fall when I start seeing it on shelves.

    I'll toss in:
Black Butte (a gold standard if you ask me)
    Anchor Porter (my favorite porter)
    Anchor Steam
SNPA (when's the last time you had one? such a damned simple solid beer)
    Workhorse
and an old one that I'd like to see again:
    Blue Heron...

Brideport has had Blue Heron on tap ever since they remodeled their tap room this past winter, and it is fantastic.

A few years ago my wife and I were doing the ale Trail in Bend, and the Deschutes pub was serving Jubelale on hand pump, like it was a cask ale in an English pub.

It was a revelation. The beer had low carbonation and a gorgeous velvety texture which suited the flavors of Jubelale beautifully. Sublime.

Am I wrong in thinking the jubelale recipe changes from year to year??

I guess this qualifies as an old time favorite.

Had a glass of draft Black Butte XXX the other day, and thought it just outstanding. For those who tend to like a little bourbon (and by that I mean a lot!) in their porter, this beer is a standout. One of the best BB anniversary beers I've had in some time. Well done Deschutes!

I've had some years of the Black Butte anniversary in the past that I haven't cared for as much, but they absolutely nailed it this year. The Black Butte Cubed aged in black butte whiskey barrels is also good, and almost tastes like an entirely different beer.
