    Urban Chestnut's 'Urban Underdog'...

I don't like regurgitating words from one post to another, but I'm lazy today, so from my review of the beer today:

Clear, light yellow body; rough carbonation; thin yet lasting head. Sweet, grainy scent. Clean tasting; mildly sweet with some gentle cereal grain presence; balanced hop bitterness. Medium-light body; crisp with some bitter bite to things; primarily dry finish.

A decent and respectable lager. Generally well-balanced and easy drinking, perhaps lacking some eye appeal and somewhat mundane for mouthfeel, but nice enough overall.

If points could be given for packaging, I would have given this particular beer extra points for its unique pop-top. It threw me for a moment until I figured out that the bulk of the top is actually pulled off. I've never seen such a can before.

After my initial beer this morning with Taxman's 'Declaration', I thought a stab at a low-key lager might be appropriate to counterbalance (counteract?) the big and boozy quality of Declaration. In this respect, Urban Underdog met my goal. A first time and single tasting shouldn't permanently label a beer, and I would say that applies to this case. The beer was sitting in a cool garage but not chilled in a refrigerator, so some things like appearance and flavor may change with subsequent tastings. This is why I usually acquire two beers of everything I order from Tavour (where I got this beer). I'll certainly revisit my impressions with the second can when I do get around to it. But in this case, Urban Underdog is certainly approachable, is tasty enough, and is something I would certainly return to no matter what.

It is amazing how all those beers come together so well. I imagine they had to taste a few

    Evolution rise up coffee stout
    ..solid black color
..above average body, not super thick but decent
..aroma is straight up coffee and malt
..taste is identical to aroma. It's not not sweet but has some coffee bitterness, especially in the finish.
..Overall it's a very good beer that I would try again. It's not complex, just straight up coffee and roasted malt[IMG]

    The review:
12oz canned 7/12/18 (38 days ago) poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass at fridge temp 7.5% ABV. The beer pours bright light honey in color with sticky light khaki head. The head recedes to a cap and leaves plenty of lacing. The aroma is tangerine and candied orange. The taste is more citrus (tangerine & grapefruit) with a side of mildly bitter, piney hops. The mouthfeel is medium bodied, sticky, adequately carbonated and mostly dry in the finish. There is some west coast shellac on the finish. Overall, very good. Nice example of a classic & well made west coast IPA.

I can see why Melvin is getting a lot of traffic on WBAYDN & NBS. Solid beer that I was surprised to see on the shelf in southern Indiana. Cheers all!

    Synopsis:
Definitely not my favorite shake, but it’s decent. A little too much sugar in the mix here, but that is the case for most shakes. So many ingredients at play here...it’s hard to get a read for what this tastes like. A bit muddled as a result. Not getting a lot of hops here, apart from a pleasing hop burn on the finish. For my money I’ll take Bananas Foster milkshake any day of the week.

We are supposed to have Melvin distro by September. Most of what I have had (had a few older cans that I didn’t put as much weight into) have been very good to excellent. Not anything better than Fat Heads or Columbus Brewing are making here, but I will definitely oblige occasionally

Friday was a rare occurrence for me. Hit 3 breweries + Mohegan Sun for Frank Pepe's pizza. The highlight was Fox Farm Brewery in Salem, CT. You could say it's in the middle of nowhere and word hasn't fully gotten out on this fantastic brewery. As expected, they have a couple of NE IPAs available but they also have many other different styles on tap - a Grissette, Czech Pilsner, and a Smoked Helles for example. They recently started canning and I was fortunate to pick up the 2 beers they had available.

The one I'm enjoying now is Roam: Nelson Sauvin. It's a "haze bomb" for sure but a well-made one at that. Nelson hops are becoming a favorite of mine - which I find amusing as I am not a fan of white wine. At 5.7% abv, it's a smooth drinker and a good choice for an afternoon beer. I always save the heavy stuff for the evenings! Cheers.

Good afternoon. Today I’m going to feature a few beers from @Duff27

First up is Vallejo from Half Acre

    look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

Pretty easy pour creates a beautiful crystal clear light gold beer with a nice foamy head and sticky lacing. deceptively soft mango nose, and a big bitter pop in the mouth full of grapefruit and a tailing off hint of orange, underscored by just a bit of earthy maltiness. Finish is fruity, bitter and not a bit dry. Really great beer.

The only underwhelming thing about this beer is the appearance, most specifically the flat pour. Virtually no head over the murky reddish brown opaque body. Things look up instantly as the big chocolate nose gives way to vanilla and cherry. Taste is equally massive as the chocolate plays a big role until the barrel creeps in with vanilla, bits of oak and a whiskey heat. Finishes up with molasses and toasted marshmallow. Body is somewhere between thin and medium, a little sticky while it leaves a very sweet aftertaste. How great this is really can’t be overstated.

Maybe that's my beef with the NEIPA style, they say they use a ton of hops but who can tell? Theyre blurred out by the fruity additions. Don't get me wrong they're very good, but they might possibly be mind blowing if say Amirillo or Columbus hops would be a player, or maybe even noticeable.I'm guessing any bittering hop will do after all it's not the star player here, and then it will be overshadowed by the fruit and the drive for crazy turbulent beers.

Totally agree. There are some NE IPAs that do let the hops shine...Other Half’s Hop Showers comes to mind first...but the vast majority are overwhelmed by additional ingredients.

    MIA's 'Ultramix' DIPA...

Still feeling lazy today as far as mixing up the verbiage between WBAYDN? and NBS, so here's my BA beer review wording...

Murky orange body; thick, frothy head. Pungent, earthy hop presence in the aroma; a bit of lemon and orange. Balanced and subdued light grain taste with fine complementary hop bitterness; elements of citrus rind; mildy zesty citrus flavors. Heavy body; lively and prickly on the palate; balanced between juicy and dry for overall mouthfeel.

This is a fine DIPA, not too bold or in your face with hop bitterness or harsh alcohol notes.

A fine tasting beer yet one that I apparently ranked lower than current impressions of others as far as BA ratings go. My overall is 3.69 which winds up at -9.1% rDev as of today. Perhaps this means that I find many fine quality beers are becoming more mainstream and available, and so my inclination to give higher ratings across the various beer evaluation criteria are starting to lower. Then it may be that I'm just a tad curmudgeonly today.

No, I think my rating is fair and that a 3.6+ overall still equates to a desirable beer. It's like the conundrum of writing USAF performance reports where something along a 3+ score really should be a respectable evaluation overall yet in practical terms could be a career progression killer for otherwise deservedly promotable individuals. I see this same elements with beer ratings. Well, one tries to do the best one can...

    New Beer #2
I've put this off long enough. Purchased on first site, months ago and kept refrigerated.

    The review:
12oz bottled 5/30/18 (3 months ago) poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass at fridge temp 11.1% ABV. The beer pours a little hazy in a rusty orange color. The head is thick and off white settling to a nice cap and leaving some lacing. The aroma is mild with rum and some tropical fruit. The taste starts with the wood part of the barrel before the rum takes over mid to late palate. Very little IPA with just a hint of the Mosaic hops and bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium bodied and adequately carbonated. The finish is a touch sweet, yet balanced by the woody notes and bitterness. The alcohol in the nose and taste slowly builds as this one warms. Overall, unique and the best (& only) rum barrel aged IPA I've ever sampled.
I'm enjoying this more than the average it seems. Keep it interesting Founders! Cheers all!

    Woodland Farms Blinky NEIPA

Happy Sunday, BAs. I'm on my way back from a week in Maine, including a few days in Portland. I've got to say that's as good a beer town as any I've been to. Really amazing stuff everywhere.

Today's new beer is a single I picked up based on the can art.

Blinky pours a hazed gold color with a large, off-white, airy, soda-like head. It leaves a thin cap, but no lacing.

It has an almost lager-like aroma with hints of bread and some distant honeydew and peach.

The same distant, overripe fruitiness shows up front in the taste with a nice grassy bitterness in the finish. Not at all lagerish here. The taste reminds me of sort of a B-caliber Heady.

It's medium bodied with a pleasant fizziness to the feel.

I like the subdued fruit and firm bitterness in this one. The look, nose and feel aren't up to snuff with contemporary NEIPAs, though. I probably wouldn't have advertised it as such.

Mid-August and I'm still not ready to go for Oktoberfests or Pumpkins ales until at least Labor Day. So this one is a great option, at least to the Oktoberfest style. Jack's Abby of Massachusetts and Foundation of Maine collaborated on this Munich style Helles called Sommerfest Lager. It was released for the first time in July 2018 so it is new. It is 6% ABV.

Pours a heady yellow with decent clarity. Big aroma of grainy and bready malts and grass. Same for the taste but there is more of a bitterness to discuss here. Light to medium body. I think it emulates the style well.

Happy Sunday NBS players. All the rain has kicked the humidity out the door and it’s a rather cool overcast summer day here on the island. Another lazy Sunday for myself. Watching mindless baseball and binge watching season 5 of Alone. Got some grilling lined up and that’s about it.

My new beer today is Resting Brew Face, a ddh nes ipa, from Mikkeller brewing. The brew checks in at 9.1% abv.

A hazy/turbid pour with a vanilla-cream color and amber hue. A frothy white cap of foam that lingers. Very subtle hops upfront. Tangy, soft, and plush fruit tones. A rather creamy flow that finishes smooth. Bitter does not seem to exist here. Decent fruit tones of lemon, orange, melon, and grapefruit. The mouth feel is moderate. Again creamy feeling with good lingering flavors. The abv is dangerously not noticeable.

Overall, it’s decent drinking but once again just really lacks the wow factor for me. Probably around a 4 here players and slightly lower.

Beer #2 for today. From Ass Clown out of Cornelius NC. IPA canned on 8/8, 7% abv. Eh, another kinda ok beer, it's fresh it pours nice, and I do like the hazy look. Nose? A bit of sour feet , yes sour feet, if you've had kids you know that smell. It's not quite b.o offensive it's just off. Certinly not a great beer, even though the tastes doesnt quite follow the nose.

I have to admit of getting a bit tired of these attempts at fruity hazy IPA bombs. Some are good, most are not.

You know what I'd like? How about a 10 day old Hop Devil, I could use it to clear my palate. I can't get it all that fresh here right now, but I'd love to find a fresh 6er. Just a simple wel made ipa where the hops are the star, and hazy milkshake yada yada isn't in play.

Picked up a few local ones today but starting off with one I received from @LloydDobler in an amazing box he sent this week, I definitely heard and felt the 'Dobler' effect from that box.

Pours a mostly clear yellow with a slight peach hue. A finger of spritzy white head that dissipated rather quickly.
Smell is tart, slight citrus, most predominant smell was salt.
Taste follows, tart, salty, citrus. The peach lingers in the finish but doesn't really show elsewhere.
Light bodied, tart with a dry finish.
    Overall a good summer sipper.

    look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 3.75

    canned 07/23/2018

L- The beer pours a pale yellow with the haziness of grapefruit juice. The head is towering 4 fingers of fluffy white bubbles. This recedes to a thing film with a thick outer ring. Lacing is heavy with curtaining.
S- The nose is sweet citrus. It gives me the impression of a mix of lemons and oranges that leans sweet rather than tart.
T-The nose and palate align. The same slightly sweet combo of orange and lemon presents itself here. It's fairly one note in that the flavor is consistent from beginning to the end of the sip. Bitterness is light, probably too light.
F- Mouthfeel is fairly thick for an APA. It's on the higher side of medium overall. More in line with a DIPA. Not overly quenching with the low bitterness and thick mouthfeel.
O- This one is a strange combination of parts for an APA. It reminds me of a scaled down version of Two Roads "Too Juicy". It seems like a session DIPA. If your looking for that than this will fill the bill. If you want a light session brew on a hot day, I'd look elsewhere.
