I don't mind a good fruity NEIPA, but it NEEDS some accompanying bitterness to be drinkable. These zero bitterness, all dry hop, no bittering hop IPA's can stay at the store/brewery.

First up today giving Tired Hands/Omnipollo/Monkish Cream Team Space Food. An interesting experiment, but overpriced and the flavors aren’t 100% working together.

A- A hazy golden straw with a two finger white head.

S- Green/dank, cotton candy, coconut, some pineapple, citrus, some vanilla.

T- Green, dank, citrus, some pineapple and a touch of coconut, some cotton candy sweetness and vanilla.

    M- Smooth, medium body.

O- I feel like they are trying too much at once with this, but not bad. My biggest issue with this is it is almost $7/can.

My experience has been the same as @nc41 in that I haven't found it less than 6 months old. And because of what you and others have noted I've passed on it each time. I did pick up Maduro of a similar age and was pleased so there's that at least.

Whats up NBS. Thanks to @lordofthewiens for the inspiration and so happy to hear things are going well for you. The terrain change alone would be an adjustment for me.
Finished a 40 plus hour week in the last three days so I wanted to get something special....I spied Simcoe. Bingo.
    Finbacks Something Simcoe
Pours a light yellow gold that is very hazy, no light shines through this. Head is white in color and quite voluminous intially, dying in a few minutes but leaving lots of lacing.
Upon sticking my nose in the freshly opened can the initial aroma is lots of tangerine, grapefruit and pine resin and damp forest floor (dankness).
Flavor follows with tangerine/orange, some grapefruit pith, some hay and herbal qualities, stonefruit, the dankness- a touch of earthy onion. The malt is likely pilsner and is laid back to let this wonderful hop shine. I am likely not skilled enough to indentify all the qualities in this brew but its a mouthful of delicious and complex flavors. Damn I love this hop!
Feel is on the lighter side of medium, carbonation is snappy and remains throughout the drink. The finish is nicely bitter and dry. An easy one to go down.
Really nice brew from Finback. Honestly I am so glad I bought a 4pk. Worth every penny. Another thing I love about Simcoe is you discover something new everytime you drink
it- even greater combined with other hops. Always an adventure. What else could you ask for?
May be back later with another. Its a bitch typing these reviews on your phone! At least Im outside enjoying this awesome weather. Peace![IMG]

Thanks @lordofthewiens for getting us rolling today. I'm travelling, so getting to sample plenty of the goodness the NE has to offer. First one today is Virtuoso from Lord Hobo.

Can dated 07/17/18 into a tulip.

L: Pours hazy golden with 1+ finger of medium density foamy head with moderate retention and left mixed lacing.

S: Nose is dominated by pineapple, with some mango accents.

T: Follows the nose well, LOTS of pineapple. A bit too much and too sweet for my palate and preferences. Finishes with limited bitterness, mild acidity and just a hint of astringency.

F: Medium bodied with low-medium carbonation, creamy on the tongue with slight tingling from acidity, silky on the swallow.

O: Wondering if this is so dominated by the pineapple due to age... Nevertheless a really solid DIPA.

I thought it was a good overall brew, an enjoyable barrel aged impy stout that I'd like to try again at some point.

Figured I'd also talk about the new brewery I tried over the weekend. Most people when going up to Lake Erie and Put-in-Bay will hang out on the island all weekend. Nope, me and a buddy decided to leave PIB and take the ferry yesterday and walk almost a mile one way just to try someplace new. Glad we did, Twin Oast Brewing in Port Clinton/Catawba Island was really nice and definitely worth the trip. To me it seemed like it was more tourist oriented than for hardcore craft beer fans but the food and beer were good there, and would love to go there again!

I certainly wouldn’t say it is undrinkable 8-12 weeks old, but you aren’t going to get the real experience. I can only imagine what upwards of 6 months is like. Some IPAs are fine (if kept cold) for that long. Jai Alai just isn’t one of them.

Good afternoon, all, and Happy New Session Pale Ale Sunday! It's been quite a sports day so far. Caught the second half of the AUDL (American Ultimate Disc League) Championship on the Stadium Channel this morning whilst quaffing my New Beer Sunday entry, then enjoyed a little of the PBR (Professional Bull Riders) Music City Knockout before the PGA (no deconstruction necessary) Wyndham Championship coverage began. I guess it's true that nature abhors a vacuum, i.e. the empty space between football seasons. Anyway, on to the beer.

My new beer for today is a "session" pale ale from Thomas Hooker: Nectar of the Goats. I thought this was rather pretty in the glass, an almost luminescent hazy pale yellow. Decent head retention, with only a modicum of sticky lacing. (The lack of lacing may be due to the inferior quality of the glassware. :flushed:) This is, in my view, the quintessential "session" beer. Light, good hop character without being overpowering, crisp and dry. The can lists the hop bill as Cascade and Centennial; the web site description says Sorachi Ace and Bravo. Which is it? It's not clear from anything I've found so far that they use different recipes for this. I'm getting pine, orange zest, Meyer lemon, and grapefruit, with nice bitterness and a very light malt presence. That works for me regardless.

Good Sunday afternoon, New Beer Samplers and commentators. It's a late start from me as I spent way too long crawling up the Garden State Parkway from the Shore this afternoon. Newark, NJ, was a major brewing city for most of its history. The big breweries, Ballantine, Krueger, Feigenspan, Pabst, and others are long gone, although there remains a large Anheuser Busch plant near the airport. The first American IPAs were brewed in Newark. For its 7th anniversary Carton released an Oak Aged IPA in the style of the old Newark brewers. In fact, Carton used yeast from California that was originally from Newark. Inside Our DNA is creamy and malty with a heavy dose of Bullion hop oils. The bitterness and sweetness really compliment each other. On his video, Augie Carton advises that this ale can be aged and will drink like a Barleywine, which I believe based on its oaky, caramel flavors. This is really a nice beer! Here's my review:

    4.35/5 rDev 0%
    look: 4 | smell: 4 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 4.5 | overall: 4.5

Canned on 8/16/2018. Poured into Carton pint glass. It pours a cloudy, orange-brown color with a large, fluffy, long-lasting snow white cap and thick, soapy lacing. Its primary smells are sweet malt, caramel, and oak. There's almost no fruit or hops on the nose. It has the taste of a Barleywine with lots of sweet malt, caramel, and oak. After the initial taste, as you swish in in the mouth there is a wash of bitter Bullion hops and quite a bit of spice that balances the sweetness very well. There's a certain oily quality to the taste (in a good way!). This ale features a rich, thick, chewy mouth feel with moderate carbonation, and I'm glad the ABV is kept to a manageable 6.6% While this drinks like a "big" IPA, given Carton's goal of emulating IPAs brewed in Newark, a higher ABV would be distracting. Overall, this is a superb beer, the whole of which exceeds the sum of its parts. Augie Carton advises that Inside Our DNA is appropriate for aging and I plan to keep a few cans for awhile and see how they evolve. This is a fitting 7th Anniversary beer from a quality, always adventuresome, brewer. Cheers to the Brick City!

I thought it appropriate to pull out my Krueger tray. Krueger was the first brewery to can beer. It first sold a cream ale in cans in 1935.

Thanks for putting up with this. I love New Jersey history and I love beer. Cheers, NBS!

Rockford Brewing. Awesome IPA. Fantastic lasting head retention and thick soapy lacing on the glass. Aromas flavors of big mandarin orange, grapefruit, lemon, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, melon, berry, citrus peel/zest, light pepper, and pine hops; with moderate toasted bread, light caramel malts; and herbal, floral, grassy hop earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body, and fairly crisp finishing. Balanced creamy/bready malts and sticky hops in the mouthfeel. Some resins/rinds, light-moderate increasing bitter dryness, no hop astringency. Very smooth, not overly aggressive, minimal warming 7.1%. Really damn impressive. They state 6 hops; and this is probably Simcoe, Citra, Amarillo, and 3 of the C's. Very juicy and fairly dank/earthy hop complexity; nice bready malt backbone, minimal residual sweetness. Would buy again. Midwest style IPA. 4.13
    [IMG]

Fantastic! Poor head retention and minimal lacing on the glass as expected. Aromas and flavors of huge sour/tart/tangy red grapes, fruit skin, plum, currant, lemon, lime, orange, cherry, raspberry, strawberry, cranberry, red/green apple, melon, red/white wine, oak, hay, straw, and grass; with some wheat, cracker, bready, brown sugar malts; light oaken vanilla, peppercorn, leathery/musty funk, red wine vinegar, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tart/sourness, fruit tang, and light yeast/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body, and fairly crisp finishing. Balanced bready/grainy malt, lactic acid, fruit tang, and oak tannins in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing acidic/tangy/tannic dryness, no puckering sourness. Extremely smooth, not overly lactic, no warmth of 8.8%. Never been disappointed by the sour series from Upland, this is one of the best ones. Outstanding balance of jammy fruit and Brett/Bacteria complexity; great oak presence and malt backbone against acidity. Consistently exceptional. 4.25

isiting something else from Revision. This one I picked up as a single, making this my first review from that mix-six pack. As I landed in Las Vegas, the haze in the distance from the wildfires become quite apparent, making the nearby mountains looking like cloudy ghosts, making the name quite relevant.

    Revision's Distance Haze.

Pours an opaque yellow-straw with a finger of white foam. The final ounces of this beer do not impart any additional murkiness. Aroma is bright and cheery, hitting notes of mango, papaya, tangerine, orange, and biscuit malts. Despite the wide array of tropical fruits, the malts poke through nicely balancing it out. Flavor profile is bright mango, tangerine, papaya, and melon with a hint of biscuit and earthy malts behind. Melon's twist chases the tropical fruit notes well, and when combined with the malt presence at the finish, maintains balance in what would otherwise be a very sugary sweet taste. Mouth feel is smooth, and is high fiber juice-like, with a medium-thick consistency. Overall, splendid balance between hops and malts, combined with the fiber-thick juice feel makes lands this creation on par with famous NE IPA producers Treehouse and Trillium. The noticeable difference between this and a Trillium beer is that this Revision beer contains and maintains a little extra viscosity in each sip.

    Score: 4.25 | 4.5 | 4.5 | 4.75 | 4.5 | BA Score: 4.51 | rDev: +9.5%

    Personal notes:
"Opaque" is italicized for emphasis. This beer (and most of all NE IPAs) are opaque/murky - not hazy. You can't see through this beer, nor can you see wisps of particles suspended on the beer. It's not a cloud, a fog, or a hazy - it's opaque, casting the only light that penetrates its dense curtains as a shade of orange. Aside from digging into word definitions, this beer is phenomenal. Trillium beers often come off a little thin to me, but the thickness of this beer that I can only liken to a fiber-rich juice gives this beer a little extra presence. That puts this one a notch above if we're talking about something to pick up for slow enjoyment after a fast paced day at work.

I walked into a local (yet way across town) bottle shop yesterday and saw bottles from a new brewery from my home town that's making/distributing all sours?! Hell yes. This deviates from my dark beer summer I've been posting the past two months but I now have another stop to swing by when I head back to Columbus in two weeks!

Since the small label doesn't say the producer- from Pretentious Barrel House. All 4s - a well made beer just not as sour as I expected

500mL bottle poured into a wine glass
    A: Brownish orange with a 1/2-finger head
    S: Wheat/mango/orange/sour berries
T: Matches the nose, lighter with an emphasis on the mango
    M: Light-bodied, not particularly acidic
O: A good beer and tasty just not sour

I like this line, Craig. I can totally relate. The scent of "pine", is what makes or breaks a great IPA for me. If it's "fresh and damp" it can be an intoxicating aroma. If it's dead and dry, it gets lost and uninviting.

The summer blast furnace here in the Brazos Valley is still cranked to 11 outside, and inside football season already has been kicking my backside at work. Good news: Today starts a three-day weekend for me, and I have a new beer, so let the recharging begin:
No Label's Squeeze & Twist, an American pale ale — it's a self-labelled IPA but at 4.4% ABV, I'm thinking of it as an APA FWIW

A little late to the party on this six-pack:
I'm assuming 18/05/24 means a born-on date of May 24 this year which means my sixer is almost three months old, but I'm glad I grabbed it. It's almost exactly what I want out of an APA with loads of sweet citrus in the nose and much of that in the flavor with a slightly bitter building aftertaste. Grapefruit juice, candied orange and pineapple are the main notes. The way that earthy hop flavor builds in the aftertaste is a deft touch by the brewer — it could get medicinal but never does.

    The review:
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/24326/348038/?ba=Premo88#review
    4.05 (+3.1% rDev)

I'm tempted to give the beer a much higher rating as a reward to No Label for brewing something tasty in the sub-4.5% ABV range. Maybe as I work through the six-pack we'll adjust the numbers.

Hope your Sundays are going well!
    Cheers!
