Scratch Brewing Company has been open over five years now and has gathered quite a reputation with their truly unique beers and beautiful brewery setting. They distribute a few places and have events in Colorado, Chicago, Louisville, and elsewhere. I've seen ratings from people nationwide who have traded for their beers and they make appearances in BA magazine and various online craft beer articles. Every time I visit the brewery I talk with people from St. Louis, Chicago, or farther away who have had it on their must-visit brewery list. So is there enough interest in this amazing little rural brewery to keep a thread going? I live an hour away and it's my most frequented brewery, usually visiting at least every couple months and more often during the best weather of the year. I don't chime in to the many Chicago brewery threads, but I'd love to talk Scratch with anyone who may be a local, semi-local, or just has gotten hold of one of their amazing, unique beers. If there's any interest in discussion, I'll post when I visit the brewery and when I have a bottle, and perhaps with any interesting news or upcoming events.

So who's been to Scratch or had some of their beers and what are your favorites?

I've loved pretty much all I've had. Hickory is always an awesomely unique, interesting, and tasty beer. Their fruited beers have been pretty delightful too (strawberry rhubarb, freestone).

I also loved reading through their Homebrewers Almanac to see interesting ideas and uses of ingredients.

Hickory is very tasty and the hickory soda is perhaps even better. I have a bottle of Freestone that I haven't got around to yet, but it'll be the next Scratch bottle I drink, hopefully next week. And I don't even homebrew but the Almanac is so cool just to get insight into their brewing.

I sampled their Sahti and it was an absolutely delicious and super flavorful beer.

I’ve passed up buying bottles while in Chicago due to the price, but I think I’ll pick some up next time I’m there, if they’re available.

The 4 places I know of in Chicagoland:
-Beer Temple (most common, the owners loves them - but they also probably sell out their quicker) and West Lakeview Liquors north of downtown.
    -Moreno's SW of downtown.
    -Open Bottle in Tinley Park

It's very dependent on timing with what's available, if they've made it up to Chicago, etc.

A friend of mine's wife was in school at SIU-Carbondale for the past 3 years - he would often bring me up growlers and bottles. Sadly, she just graduated and they're moving to NC, so that connect is done :-)

I definitely hawk Beer Temple's facebook (and I'm not even on facebook) looking for Scratch deliveries.

I've only ticked 19 different Scratch beers according to untappd - the very first Spring Tonic I tried was a revelation - it was like the best boozy ginger ale you could imagine. I remember liking the Alehoof sour which was one of the first growlers he brought me, strawberry rhubarb, and recently, the Pepita ("English mild" made from pumpkin seeds).

So - I'm in for this thread for sure!

My wife and I visited Scratch at the eclipse weekend last year. Absolutely the most beautiful brewery setting Ive ever seen. A magical place.

Once you learn their story and see their dedication to use locally foraged ingredients, you will be hooked. Ive had their stuff locally at the Beer Temple and also fobab. Had a few at gabf last year, Bark Sour stood out of that bunch. Gooseberry Saison and Sour Hyssop I loved. Looks like I have 17 Scratch ticks on UT.

Even if I didnt love each beer I tried, I was very interested in their craft and dedication and willingness to experiment with their terroir. I mean, who makes smoked locally foraged mushroom beer???
    Awesome thread thanks for starting.

This sums up exactly how I feel about their beers!

Yes, forgot to mention - was thinking more about bottles - but they always have one Scratch line on tap.

Thank you both. Ideally, bottles. Worst case, something on draft.

Local Option occasionally gets Scratch kegs too.
In the past they've sent beer to CO, KY, NC, SC, IN, DC, NY, and even Belgium.

Big fan of Scratch, just had a Sour Hyssop at Beer Temple last night. The brewery itself is easily my favorite one in Illinois. Their wet-hopped IPA last year was the best i've had in recent memory. Hopefully it comes back soon...

The owners Marika and Aaron were in Chicago for a Beer Temple event back in May, they shared a lot of their creative process and were super knowledgeable. They talked with the crowd afterwards, and were extremely down to earth people. I'm glad they have been so successful.

95 different Scratch beers for me. I know people with more. Spring Tonic is a yearly that I haven't had yet. They had it the last two times I've been, but lately they've had so many bottles available that I can't get them all. I will pick it up either next time or next year. Had Pepita recently and it's such a flavorful easy drinker.

We were there eclipse weekend also. I remember going specifically to get my wife a recently-released goat shirt and have some Basil IPA, which is probably my favorite Scratch beer if I had to pick one. And you said it well. The first time I went, I had a beet stout. I thought it was a good stout if it didn't have the beets. Then I later realized that the beet is what made it Scratch. Every Scratch beer is always unique, always experimental, and always worth trying, even if not the best beer I've ever had.

They have a wet-hopped ale right now. It's not an IPA, just a pale, but the fresh hops are very nice of course and they used a wild mixed culture, and the lower hop level makes for a really complex pale. I really enjoyed it. And the owners do seem really nice. The fact that one or both are usually there says a lot. I'm not the chatty type, but I'll ask about a beer I hope to see again or make a compliment on what I had that day or whatever and they always respond and act grateful that people come to their brewery, and it's cool that they're there and always willing to talk to people. And one time I asked Aaron when a beer would be released again and turns out it had just been bottled and he hooked me up with a bottle (well, I paid for it) several weeks before they released it. He could have just told me it'd be a few weeks, but that was really cool.

    From Saturday, 8/25:
Sour hyssop, Sour Cedar, Marigold Chamomile, Nettle Spicebush. Marigold Chamomile was the best of the bunch, really bright and perfect for a too-warm summer afternoon. Cedar could have been stronger on the cedar, but all four were tasty and paired extremely well with the pesto pizza. I also had a few sips of my wife's coffee porter. It was pretty straightforward actually, which I'm not accustomed to with Scratch. It was quite good, more English-style porter with strong but not overpowering coffee. I capped it off with a full glass of Oak Aged Wild Grape Leaf. Complex and evolving as it warmed, it was the best of the day and one of my favorites from Scratch.

    From Monday, 8/27:
Wet-Hopped Pale Ale, featuring hops I've been watching growing in their garden all year (walking around the garden and seeing the goats is part of the Scratch experience!). Not overly hoppy, which allows the wild yeast culture flavors to shine through and makes for quite a complex pale, which of course tastes like no other pale I've ever had.

I don't have any grand thoughts on Scratch, except to say that the few beers I've had from them were all interesting and I'm looking forward to having more.

But I do have one grand thought: this was an excellent post, @dlcarst and it's in the best spirit of this community. Thanks!

In terms of experiences, I put Scratch up there with visiting Hill Farmstead, Upright (the old taproom), New Glarus, Hammerheart, and Logsdon (when you could still visit the farm), which is to say a truly special, unique, and inexplicable experience that is more than the sum of its parts; it was magical (at the risk of being too romantic). It's a gorgeous, picturesque environment that feels welcoming and relaxing, a lovely, idyllic respite from the real world. Also, the few food options that they have available are great.

In terms of beer quality alone, I also put them very, very highly. Every beer is unique, to repeat myself, and I don't think they really make a single bad beer (or soda for that matter). Every beer is interesting, balanced, showcases the unusual ingredients without being gimmicky or overpowering the other elements of the beer, and are great beers in their own right outside of their oddities. I also have a ton of respect for the foraging elements of their brewing process.

In short, I don't have a bad word to say about the brewery except that their pricing can be high, though considering the very costly realities that their methods deal in, this is not surprising and is not something that can be held against them at all. They are a hugely underrated and under-mentioned brewery and should absolutely be a destination for anyone and everyone.

I don't think I can pick just one Scratch beer as my favorite, like I can't pick one beer as my favorite in general. But this one is a Scratch top-3:

The basil is just awesome. So fresh tasting, and it really works like a hop, as if instead of extra hops they just used basil. The basil is really in-your-face, but further drinking reveals much more to this beer. Piney hops, lemon, honey, and some malty goodness. This is a must-buy every year for me and if it was cheaper it would be a go-to.

Stopped by Beer Temple yesterday - they had Spring Tonic, Barrel Aged Cedar Oak, Cherry Bark Biere de Garde, and they had one last Pepita on the shelf but I bought it.
