Many thanks @lordofthewiens for getting this holiday weekend edition up and running! Really looking forward to the day the home improvement and moving are done. Later today I have a 'date' with some baseboards...but at least we'll (finally) be able to move into the master bedroom this week.

My offering today is Trillium's Peanut Butter PM Dawn. Can dated 08/21/18 into a snifter.

L: Pours jet black with a thin ring of low density chocolate head that dissipates almost as fast as it forms.

S: Nose is all coffee, once the beer is warm you can perceive some subtle peanut butter and roasted malts undertones.

T: Better balance of the coffee and peanut butter. Also getting some cocoa undertones. Really quite nice and interesting taste profile. Finishes with moderate bitterness, peanut butter hangs on the palate a bit.

F: Low-medium bodied with medium carbonation, tongue tingles from carbonation and ABV, slick finish.

O: Didn't know what to expect from a peanut butter coffee stout. But I really enjoyed the beer! Not something I'd want frequently, but I'm glad I grabbed two cans.

    BA score = 4.44, rdev = -0.7%

Bill Bradley has always been a hero of mine. He hasn't shrunk, he was always listed at 6'5". From Crystal City Missouri he went to Princeton and became a 3 year All American. He was a Rhodes Scholar and went to Oxford. He returned for a distinguished professional career with the New York Knicks. He later became a US Senator from New Jersey. He scored 58 points against Wichita State in 1965. A great ball player and individual.

Afternoon NBS and thanks to @lordofthewiens for the kickoff. I am no golfer. My experience is basically a lesson @the Princess in Scottsdale Arizona years ago. Won a trip there. It was one beautiful course I will say that.
I am recuperating from my 40 hour 3 day work week and enjoying this Sunday. I have at least 2 new brews starting with this:
    Mayflower Brewing 398 DIPA
Pours a beautiful slightly hazy, golden orange color. Head is about a half inch of off white foam that lasts a few minutes than leaves the occasional spot of lacing.
Aroma is lots of overripe pineapple, sweet citrus, pine resins and lots of cannabis- nicely dank.
Taste is tropical in nature again - candied pinapple, guava, tangerine, pine resins and indica. There is also a touch if sweet malt that rounds out this huge mouthfull flavor.
Feel is medium bodied with a soft mouth and likely the presence of oats in the mash. Carb lasts throughout and the sweetish front is nicely dried up on the finish. There is no hint of the 8% and this beer is highly drinkable.
A superb effort here by a brewery you dont see much of here on BA. This is very well executed. Loads of aroma and flavor is a soft and easy drinking package. Really doesnt get much better in a DIPA. Seek and try this you will not regret it! @utopiajane I wish you were closer! I would consider it an honor to sit and have a brew with you and hear your review. Cheers![IMG]

    Wynbridge vanilla imperial porter
    ..dark muddy almost solid black
..slightly creamy thick body with low / medium carbonation
..Aroma is roasted malt ,black coffee, dark fruit and vanilla
..taste is mostly roasted malt and black coffee. There's a vague dark fruit taste then a mild almost non existent vanilla
.. overall it was a tasty porter, that was very enjoyable and I would try this again. The vanilla and dark fruit didn't show up clearly and took away instead of adding to the flavor[IMG]

Good afternoon and happy New Barrel Sunday. Not a whole lot of fun going on this weekend, but I have been enjoying the Indy Car racing presence this weekend at Portland International Raceway. Fun to hear them and smell the BBQ from just a short distance from home. In honor of the loud, noisy, rowdy, crazy fans of racing I went with something else notorious for being loud, noisy, rowdy, and crazy...

    Santiam
    Pirate- Rum-Barrel Aged Coconut Stout

Santiam Pirate is a good looking barrel aged stout. A lot of the time, barrel aged beers have that thin head and oily look to them, but Pirate is different. Pirate is black as night and clean looking like a polished 8 ball. The head above is impressive and sturdy. Its khaki colored foam sttles with little bubbles popping one by one to ultimately leave a smooth and creamy looking surface.

As one would guess, this smells like a piña colada. Plenty of coconut, sweet booze, and wood. But underneath lies milk chocolate and heavily toasted bread which really makes this aroma shine.

Straight up Hawaiian Tropic in a glass. Coconut, rum, milk chocolate... all the same. The wood really lingers on in the end though. A touch of cola hits before the wood with a cinnamon/ nutmeg spice thing going on.

Pretty thin, highly carbonated, and very dry. I think the dryness is enhanced due to the wood presence. Despite the tropical infusion of sweet flavors, this is actually well balanced and has a bit of a bitter bite to compliment the barrel finish.

Overall, Pirate sounds, looks, and smells good, but the flavor and texture really turned it around negativity for me. It really needs more body to it. If this was creamy and rich like the appearance implied it would probably be an outstanding beverage.

Some appropriate tunes for the occasion, kind of:

After my official review, I gave Pirate a rating of 3.89 with an rDev of -0.8%. Which should make @cjgiant happy.

Cheers everyone, and I will see you all soon.

Hoping your Labor Day weekend is going well... After way too much yard work, it’s time for a new beer.

Today’s choice is BA Oat from Southern Tier.

I had heard fantastic things about the base beer and was super excited to try this one. In the end, it’s a good BA stout but it comes off a little sweet and doesn’t really stand out from others in its class.

Poured from 500 ml bottle dated April 2018.

A: Pitch black with 1-2 finger tan head. Lasting retention and chunky lacing.

S: Bourbon, dark chocolate, coffee, vanilla, oak, and molasses.

T: Rich dark chocolate, sweet bourbon, vanilla, and coffee combined with subtle dark fruits. A bit of an off note at the finish like wet cardboard that becomes much less noticeable as it warms.

M: Full bodied almost chewy with above average carbonation for the style. Creamy mouthfeel with a sweet finish.

O: Very nice BA stout that comes off a touch too sweet for my tastes but otherwise very enjoyable.

    Synopsis:
Weird AF. But I guess that’s to be expected from a “dry hopped 5 nut double american blonde ale”. The nuts are there, but only barely. I can taste a bit of pecan and almond, but it’s ephemeral. Mostly this beer presents as a sweet blonde ale, which is not that appealing, especially for the price.

It does. Pirates scare me ever since that one time one plundered our house and murdered my mom.

    Don’t worry, she got better.

Should be able to find a new beer soon...

New Imperial Stout Sunday (Week 706)
Greetings fellow NBSers from on the ridge in Mid Hud Val, NY. Excellent day in the woods. It is so great to wander through thick woods and see the interplay of all the plant and fungal life, each with their own unique forms and beauty. Finding edible mushrooms is just the icing on the cake. Today there was no icing, the woods were just too dry to produce what I was looking for (just below The Trapps for those who know this area). I did find two end of season chanterelles and one surprisingly moist L. volemus, so will add those to supper tonight.

This beer is hitting the spot, and I am enjoying it so much as I near the end of the 16 oz. can that I might go back and refine my review a bit. Black Crack from Southern Star Brewing Co.

Pours black with a thin skim of finely bubbled tan foam that relaxes quickly to a lasting ring. A swirl produces thin, oily lace.

Delicious, medium strength aroma that brings the words mocha vanilla bourbon to mind. It is a rich aroma that fills me with anticipation.

Medium strength, well balanced mix of sweet chocolate, chocolate, vanilla, cocoa, and light coffee notes, that gets joined by roasty bitter and bourbon to close with a warming semi dry blast.

Light bodied for style, nice low carb., light/med. viscosity, with a clean excellent finish that lasts.

This is a beer that is straightforward and well balanced with clean flavors that blend well and def. hit all the pleasure notes a good BA stout should hit. Recommended for sure.

Hope you also have a Great American Beer in your glass. Cheers!

    NBS beer #1 Septoberfest edition

I wandered into a Tops grocery store in western NY in the process of bringing my daughter back to college. In so doing I found a lovely display of Septoberfest beers to which I had not been previously acquainted. None are whales by any stretch, but ones that I don't have access to at home in VT.

    Leinenkugel's Oktoberfest

    Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Company
    German Märzen / Oktoberfest / 5.10% ABV

    3.55/5 rDev +11.3% | Score: 3.19
    look: 3.75 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.25 | overall: 3.5

L-The beer pours an attractive clear copper. The head is 2 fingers of off white foam which recedes to a ring and irregular central island. Lacing is absent.
S- Nose is pretty typical for a marzen. There is a light caramel malt presence. Spicy hops are present over the top of the malt presence.
T-Malt presence here is stronger than in the nose. The malt however is not as sweet as in a Sam Adam's Okto. Hop presence does a good job balancing the beer.
M- Mouthfeel overall is light, bordering on watery. Carbonation is prickly enhancing the light feel. This is one you can drink multiples of easily without feeling weighed down.
O-This one is ok. Mouthfeel is a little watery for my personal taste. It is better balanced in terms of sweetness than Sam Adams is for those who don't want a sweet Okto.

    New brew number two...
Mainstream Pop Song DIPA (8% abv), from Stillwater Artisanal...
Medium-deep orange-gold and opaque, with a finger-plus of white foam on top... Orange and melon seem to be the dominant fruit impressions here, with a supporting cast of tropical and citrus flavors like grapefruit, lime, and mango... Moderately sweet and mildly bitter, with a solid malt body... Smooth and medium-weight but with a little chew to it... A very nice, fruit-forward DIPA entry from Stillwater... No canning date, but based on their Instagram page this was probably a 7/3/18 can release...

Hope they wake you up before they go-go, and may you never be left hanging on like a yo-yo; here's to you getting to hit that high, cheers...

Nice to see you found a way to have fun without me being around :rolling_eyes:

Had that at the Olmsted location the other night. I liked it but did think it was a little bold and full fir the style, maybe closer to a [robust] porter.
