Hey all - my beer fridge got way too cold and ended up freezing a few cans. Are these beers done, or will they still taste somewhat okay? They were just stouts and NEIPAs.

Also, is there anyway to regulate refrigerator temperatures better? What might be the symptom for a refrigerator getting too cold?

    Thanks in advance!

You're fine, simply defrost it. As far as regulating temp - I would put a digital thermometer in there, and don't trust the adjusting dial. Keep in mind that air coming from the freezer will be colder, and will gravitate to the lower shelves, making them colder. If beer is freezing on the bottom shelves, try moving them to the top shelf but away from the air coming from the freezer.

Haha maybe symptom was the wrong word, but maybe reasons why my fridge is getting too cold?

Temp set too low or it is not working properly?

It's a wine fridge with clear temperature settings. I had it set around 45 degrees, but it tends to bounce around. Mostly heading towards high 30s to low 40s. Something must not be working properly.

Can we seriously put this in like a stickied thread or FAQ or something? I haven't been on this site all that long and this comes up like every other month.

Your beer is ok, maybe a little worse for wear, but what's the alternative? Dump it all out? Just let it thaw and drink it.

If it won't hold a fairly steady temperature - measured with digital thermometer - then get rid of it, or at least stop using it for beer. Doubt it is worth fixing, unless it is a very expensive unit and/or under warranty.

If your built-in thermostat is balky you can purchase an external controller like this one: https://www.amazon.com/Inkbird-Temp...8-1&keywords=inkbird+external+temp+controller

Johnson Controls makes similar units that are popular with homebrewers, but typically they are more expensive.

It overrides the built-in temp controller by cutting off the compressor from running when the Inkbird thermocoupler that is placed inside the fridge says the correct temp is reached. Essentially it replaces the built-in balky thermocoupler.

The frozen beers will be fine, just put them in the regular fridge until they thaw.

Then fill your beer fridge with a 30 pack of Hamms and fiddle with the controls until they don't freeze.

Yrs. ago when in college in VT we would put a leftover beer or two out on the windowsill in winter, let it freeze, then in the morning open it and suck off the alcohol off the top. Don't freeze your beer !

The beers that I have had freeze had no carbonation after thaw.

    Enjoy

Same here - they were lost beers and I learned from my mistake (usually in a hurry to drink them and forgetting about them).

    I set a timer now so I don’t forget.

Worst forget was a bunch of Stone 22oz bottles many years ago. Cracked the bottles open as they froze.

    Enjoy

I could see that if the cap was compromised - the liquid expands enough to affect the integrity of the seal (or can seam, I suppose).

Like MG said, get a separate controller if you can't calibrate your fridge using the existing thermostat.

It's probably gonna suck tbh, I've never defrosted a beer and ended up tasting normal.
