Mrs. Z overdid again yesterday (too many stairs in the Louvre) and is still in/will be in the bed today...what’s a boy to do? Did someone say, “Side by Side Thursday.”?

Westvleteren 12 vs. Trappistes Rochefort 10.
I was told at the bottle shop in Brussels that the Westy was bottled this year, and I can tell from the code the TR 10 was bottled May 8, 2018:

My first “Westy”...is it really better than my favorite quad (and rare 5 on my personal scorecard)? Let’s drink!

Both beers appear identical. Brown/Ruby Brown with mousse-like huge beige head; Never ending cap retention and heavy lacing; Slight nod to 10 for heavier lacing. 4.75/5.0

Both have sweet malt/raisins nose, but the 12 has a hint of spice. 5.0/4.75

Both beers are delicious! The 12 is a little more prune with spice, the 10 is earthy with touch of booze. 5.0/5.0

The 12 is jammier; both have moderate plus carbonation; the 10 feels thinner and is a tad astringent. 5.0/4.75

Overall, the 12 is stickier and the plum/raisin/spice notes shine; the 10 is earthier with a slight booziness that appeals to me; both get a score of 5.0/5.0.

As you can see (w/o me doing formal reviews or the math), the Westy will slightly beat the TR 10 by a little ... I need to age one of my Westys and compare at, say 5 years, where I think TR 10 really becomes a tour de force! Ah, Science...

Have a great day y’all, and cheers from Villemomble, Fr!

A misty rain begins to fall...I move indoors and I occupy my afternoon with laundry and light cleaning chores, and a Leffe Triple:

Tomorrow we tackle Versailles early, so I have a lot to do today (thankfully the ‘fridge is well stocked!). Cheers!

Deep rich gold color with white cap and lacing.

Aroma of bready malt with floral, spicy hops.

Taste is malt forward in a slightly heavy, bready style. I cannot tell if the grain bill is entirely malt as it seems to have some other grain presence as well. The flavors are good yet not quite as complex or sophisticated as the European versions of Helles Lager. Hops do play a role in the flavor profile by adding a bracing sharpness that counter balances the grain.

    Medium texture with balancing carbonation.

Overall it's a competent middle of the road take on what I will call American Helles in that even though it may not be an AAL it does seem to have some elements of the better made examples of that style.

A little soup for breakfast. Not a bad night, but this humidity is really getting annoying. This beer is delicious.

Versailles is really a must see my friend. I’m glad you and Lisa have been enjoying the country. So a couple days left in Paris?

Didn't like this beer at all on draft at the Mills River brewery, but it's passable in a can at two months old. Cheers all!

This is such an interesting beer. When you get your nose in there—I mean really in there—I get such a dank onion smell. I really like that smell. But the taste is a citric fruit, grapefruit. I really like this. Cheap price too.

Back from the market with Mrs. Z...I picked up a bottle in Brussels this week and will join you mon ami:

This is a nice Triple, more floral hop and kinda fruit forward. Very little clove...a “revolution” in my limited Triple experience and now I know I must dig deeper!

I’ve had it before and love it as much as the first time - solid beer. Now available in the bottle shop near me. Speaking of triple: I love Karmeliet, Westmalle or Chimay but Gouden Carolus just is from a different world.

Look it up even in Murica it’s there too.
