This is true. Preferences always come into play with these things. I just know I had LPF '08 a year ago (at Cantillon)... one of the top 10-15 beers I've ever had. It was insanely complex and I couldn't even really describe it.

LPF > LPK in terms of taste for me

LPK > LPF in trade value due to scarcity because it hasn’t been made in awhile.

with the Lou Pepes it just comes down to scarcity and the values of each just tends to fluctuate. Years ago LPF use to trade the highest of the 3 and it’s just recently that LPK has come on the rise due to it not being made recently. I think most people who have tried all three would rate LPF is their preference based on taste. At the end of the day they are both 1:1 for me as in if I had an LPK, I’d easily trade it for an LPF. However, in terms of trade value LPK has skyrocketed because we don’t know when it’ll be made again.

I would think you need a decent plus. Most years you would just need to make up for the fact that someone has it over here so something small but St. Lam this year was way more limited so it has gone up in value. Black Gold is probably 1:1 with vign or close to it. St. Lam is closer to Black Magick levels or 2 FOb4 give or take.

Very nice insight. What vintage year was the last LPK released? I had a 2014, and I’m curious if there has been one since.

St. Lam right now - from trades I have seen - definitely appears to be somewhere between Rare and 1.5 Rare's. If I had a gun to my head, I'd say only people ISO a specific bottle would really consider moving for less, whereas probably 50% may move for Rare Level while the other 50 move for closer to 1.5 Rare (as part of a larger trade).

I want to say October 2014. That was when I went to Cantillon for the fou foune release. It was limit 3 for FF and limit 2 for LPK per day. I ended up bringing back 16 FF and only 4 LPK back to the states. If only I had known that was going to be the last run of LPK....

I could be wrong and the last year could have been 2015 but for sure it’s either 2014/15....pretty sure 2014.

You are correct. LPK '15 was released with Lambic d'Aunis b2 for Quintessence 2018. I believe the limits were 2 for Lambic d'Aunis and 1 for LPK.

Thank you both for the feedback, decided to just lump the St. Lam into a larger trade with LPK and Fou Foune.

The interesting things about trade values, rarer bottles and larger trades is that it cuts both ways.

If you can get multiple bottles in one trade - especially ones that are hard to find - many people are totally open and willing to go over trade value. At the same time, a lot of times when you bundle people relax the ask somewhat.

Last question for a while I promise. Just want to get feedback one more time and make sure you guys don't think I'm being unfair in my trade proposal. We've already agreed to my BAA '18 for his LPK '11 1:1. Then was thinking of adding to the trade my BA Sump '18 and MD b5 for his Fou Foune, St. Lam and Kriek (750ml). All Cantillon bottles I think are 2017, but he didn't specify. Seem fair?

Personally, I thought the LPK for BAA 18 was a little generous on his part. Those additional bottles on both ends balances the whole trade out nicely. If anything I think you still have a slight edge, but it's minor, and not something that I would worry about. Use this as an opportunity to make this person your trading partner.

I know it hasn't been released yet (bottle pickup begins Saturday), but I've seen a bunch of trades closed so far for Bourbon ANTEAD. Anyone know what the value is compared to Wilfred, IGCCS, etc? I feel like ANTEAD can fetch some big bottles.

It just doesn't make sense to me, I really don't see people that really like this stuff having that much difficulty obtaining it (outside of BA) for ya'll to need to trade something as valuable as a new bomber of MD.

My apologies, but I'm not sure I understand your argument. Pips bottles are incredibly limited and difficult to obtain. If your argument is that mead in general shouldn't be that hard to obtain then you would be correct. But then you'd also be labeling all meads as a commodity that are easily interchangeable with no unique qualities which is definitely not the case. It'd be like saying I don't know why someone would give up such a valuable Pips bottle for a maple coffee stout that are so easy to obtain.

How long will Pips bottles be difficult to obtain? I mean, my circle seems to get them without trying but I guess whatever I don't really care about mead. Kind of like how people stopped caring about Garagiste as soon as they started caring about Superstition...and then they stopped caring about Superstition even quicker as soon as Pips became the hip mead...and that hasn't even been but a flash in the pan so far. I mean where does all this stuff come from so suddenly, and why does it die off even faster? I'm just saying this stuff will likely be very easy to obtain in 3-6 months.

Plenty of good points there, but your argument works for any brewery/meadery that increases their production. Hence why MD b5 is half the value of MD b3 and people swear b3 was terrible. And I'm considering values when both were first released, not current day values so we're talking apples to apples. Plenty of folks still care about Superstition, Garagiste, Schramms, etc. just maybe not in your immediate circles and obviously the lower bottle count/meadery only releases (just like with any brewery release). The beer scene is much more mature than the mead scene and hence less "flavors of the week". But you still see it in the beer scene a la Three Chiefs is the new flavor of the beer week. Pips production has only steadily increased recently, but unless your friends with members not sure how anyone has had easy access to them especially if not in the Northern Illinois/Southern Wisconsin area. Said my piece and understand yours so will not let everyone get back to trade value talk. Cheers!
