Purely anecdotal, and based on experiences that are >5 years old, but when I was using Fermcap S in the boil, and bottling, I actually felt I was getting a denser looking head that lasted longer.

Realize there is potential to misinterpret. I did not use it in the bottles. I just meant that thes observations occurred before I got a legging setup

Anyone have experience using it in a starter? I'm thinking of making a 2L starter in a 2L flask and using fermcap to keep it from overflowing. Fool's errand?

I always use it in my small boil for my starters. It will definitely help, but you may still get some krausen during the starter's fermentation, depending upon the level of activity. Cheers!

    Thanks.

Have you ever added it to your starter after the yeast is pitched?

Yep, I do that all the time--I don't add it as a matter of course, but only if it looks like it needs it once the yeast get going.

No, I figure what I added to the boil will still be in the starter, so I don't add more. No reason you can't add it after pitching the yeast. Cheers!

Update - I made a 2L starter in my 2L flask yesterday afternoon. I didn't add it to the boil, but added a drop to the starter before heading to bed last night. This morning there was just a slight ring of bubbles, so it appears to have controlled it completely.

Thanks for all the starter insights.

Fermcap is one of the more underrated tools in my brewing kit. I've made 3 gallon batches of a blonde ale in my 3.2 gallon Speidel and, using Fermcap, no issue with blowoff using WY1272.

    3787 on the other hand....
