Thats a steal! No wonder it sold out so quick. I paid $150 for a bottle a few years ago. I doubt that I will do it again but I wanted to try it and enjoyed it. The good news, I now have a vessel to put my ashes in once I'm gone! If I don't quit drinking I may not fit!

I paid $200 for a bottle in 2015 for the experience and saw it for sale at a Cub Food Liquor store a couple weeks later for $160. Was a touch disappointed with that. Ended up sharing pours with good friends over a period of about a year. Told myself it was worth the cost for being able to share but I'd not do it again. Then this year I saw it and I caved in. Paid $200 again. Would only buy one for $85 but obviously would be happier.

True. I’ll have to cop to two things:

1 Not reading this post very carefully and missing some of the finer details, like those 588 bottles
2 Having only cursory knowledge as to how the Canadian distribution system works. I have never worked in that market directly and suppose I projected my knowledge of “our ways” onto this situation. I was not suggesting that a US distributor and the LCBO engaged in some sort of crazy cross-border back door deal if that’s the impression you got,

Still, seems weird to me that they are able to price Utopias that low in an export market. I’d think there has to be import taxes and the like that would seemingly drive cost up vs American prices, not down. I know when my old brewery had exported kegs to Quebec, they ended up more than double the price of the average cost in the US. Makes me wonder what kind of margins they are working with on that product.

It's not even available in my state. Though even if it were I wouldn't pay 200 bucks for it, especially since you can't really drink it like a normal beer.

These days, what IS a normal beer?

Well, you can apparently beer-bong it like a normal beer as in this video. That would be about the equivalent of 11.6 Buds.

I just missed that last time around.

I have a feeling BBC sees Ontario as a great market for them. A sole buyer for the whole province. It will be interesting to see if more Sam Adams stuff starts to filter in.

I can only guess why prices would be so much lower in Canada but I can see why border city residents would take the short drive and pay duties at on the way back still coming out way ahead financially.

I'm sure it's a great drink, but I'd never pay that for any beer. I'm also what you'd call "not affluent", though.

Setting affluence aside for a moment I can still think of a helluva lot of things I would rather spend $200 on instead of just one beer.

I would love it if there was a follow up vid from an hour later. Whatever your alcohol tolerance, bonging a whole utopias must do some sort of damage

Towards the end of the video he said it wasn't sitting so well, like he was getting queasy. Bet he "reverse-beer-bonged" it not too long after.

I can handle sipping 135 proof bourbon, but beer bonging 28% beer would make me vomit instantly. He's a boss just for keeping it down at all.

When I watched that the word moron kept buzzing through my brain ... as much as I try to be non-judgemental. And it was in all caps no less!

I don't think he put the entire bottle in there. Also, I laughed. That's the sort of thing you can only do when you didn't pay for it out of your own pocket.

It's incredible what some people will do just to say they did it. Einstein was correct when he said genius has limits but idiocy does not.
