I'm not sure that low ABV necessarily equates to less calories. I drink beer because of the alcohol effects so if I am drinking 5% beer instead of 10% beer I am going to drink two beers instead of one to get the same effect so calories wise it is a wash and the higher ABV beer may end up having less calories than the two 5% beers. I also drink beer because I enjoy the taste, if I only care about nutrition I would drink straight vodka. If you work out and have a healthy diet and lifestyle there is nothing wrong with drinking big beers and still maintaining a good physique

I keep saying that I am going to reply, and I keep not. So, here goes.

I am calorie-conscious when I drink. This means that I take ABV into account in terms of the total that I drink, but I never shy away from any ABV, no matter if it's 3.5, 19, or anything in between. I drink what tastes good. That said, if I want to have 2 beers in a day I am more likely to choose 2 beers (both 12oz) that are 9ish% over 2 that are 14%.

Other than that, my setting (as others have mentioned) dictates my preference.

    Calories and ABV are correlated.

90% of the volume of beer I’ve had this year is 5.5% ABV or less, which is lower than 2017. Looking to average under 5% ABV going forward.

Fake news, no calories in alcohol, not listed in the contents. Beer is a liquid. Water is a liquid. Water has no calories, so beer has none.

I like beers all over the range, but I will admit my preference is for higher ABV, especially for hoppy beers. Session IPA's always feel anemic to me. I do love low ABV British style beers, but they are very rare around here. I think it might be because I started my appreciation of drinking with Spirits, so booziness is never a problem for me. Though I do prefer wine at the lower end of the ABV spectrum, generally.

4-6% abv for me when I comes to a session of drinking. If i'm looking to tie one on then DIPAs to Pastry Stouts 8-12%. Its always those 7% beers that mess up my day. ;-)

Good luck with your health! I have back issues too, but not to the extent you do apparently. I also need to lose weight, it's not easy to do. I've been keeping my average abv lower than it used to be, maybe it'll help. I'll have to focus on buying lower abv beers for a while.

Thanks. It made a huge difference - the weight slid off.

Please count me in with the lower abv people as well. I prefer nothing lower than 4.5 and I would say that most of the beer I drink tops out at 6% .

I pretty much pay no attention to ABV unless I'm tailgating or at some other function that I know I'll be drinking more than 3-4 beers. In those cases, lower is better. I'm not 25 anymore and don't feel the need to get completely smashed. Recovery is way longer these days than it used to be.

It basically follows a simple rule, the ABV gets higher as it gets later in the day, the ABV is the PM hour I'm drinking, give or take, So around 5 before dinner, around 7 for dinner and 9 to double digit after dinner. 13% seems to bee the roof for me though.

Normally during summer I stop at 7.5-8 though...

I also prefer maltier beer after dinner and crispier and hoppier beer early in the day.
