I discovered Lagunitas Little Sumpin Sumpin and Dale’s Pale Ale which I have drank a lot of lately. Many were mentioned here that I have yet to see here in Texas, but if and when I do, I’ll be all over them like a dog on a bone.

I miss seeing lagunitas new dogtown on my local shelves. That beer was amazing. Orange marmalade on toast.

Yeah three floyds is not normal. I think they are hesitant to call something ipa. Alpha king is classified as a APA on beer advocate as well and the two beers couldn't be any more different. Talking about three floyds i need some fresh air and their is a beautiful park across the street. Shame I'm broke.

I feel like the line between APAs and IPAs has dulled to the point where almost of the newer pale ales are just as hoppy and soft as an ipa. I mean, cmon, Fort Point is an ipa. I like Lizard King by Pipeworks but that also rivals most IPAs I’ve had. Promises made by my local guys, Sand City is a great pale but if I tasted it blind I’d think I was drinking an ipa. Party Crasher by LIC Beer Project too.

If I’m going strictly pale ale, a balanced pale ale that is equal parts in every category, not just a soft hoppy beer then Sierra Nevada all day long. It’s juicy, piney, bitter, malty, it checks all the boxes. I think HA Daisy Cutter, the original, is a balanced pale. A little juicier than SNPA but still checks a lot of boxes. I’ve always enjoyed Troegs’ pale ale. I like Greenroom by Barrier if I’m picking something local.

Edit: coming to my mind now, I really liked Duckpin PA by Union. A friend picked me up a 6 on a road trip and it reminded me of Daisy Cutter.

Another vote for Sierra Nevada Pale Ale - Don’t think this one will ever get old. It’s understandable that it’s still widely consumed and a cheap option.

I'm really glad to see that there's still love for Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, they deserve it. If there's ever been a "go-to" beer for me that would be it.

And as some have pointed out, the APA style has really been stretched, covering a lot of beers that are basically IPAs, but also including some additional ingredients that wouldn't normally be included. How great is American brewing culture?!!!

Yeah can anyone enlighten me as to why fort point is considered a pale ale, not an IPA? I’m pretty ignorant about brewing but i always thought the major difference between APA and IPA was the abv. And fort point is 6.6%, putting it squarely in the IPA range. Why do they call it a pale ale?

FWIW my favorite pale ales are Hecto by suarez and Nelson pale ale by hill farmstead. Sneakbox by Kane nipping at their heels but not quite as good.

Like many others have said, I go with Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. No questions asked, it is and always will be my favorite APA and what I consider the pinnacle of the style.

I think the American beer scene is pretty darn good right now. I will use the word "great" once the craft beer industry figures out how to remove the plethora of old beer on my local beer retailers shelves; this aspect is really deplorable now. A plus would be educating and motivating all of the new small, local craft breweries that are opening (about 3 new breweries opening every day) to implement proper brewing practices (i.e., QC/QA programs).

    Cheers!

I want to say Dale's Pale Ale just over SNPA but we all know it's really an IPA.
