The difference between the best and worst barrel aged imperial stouts is razor thin.

I’m not sure I’d agree with best and worst. But certainly best and middling

I'm not going to try to put words in your mouth, but I want to agree with this because of what I'd call "acceptable levels of oxidation". Personally, that sherry character only belongs in a small percentage of beers, most being barleywines of the English persuasion. In imperial stouts, I just can't stand it. It's right up there with overly phenolic Brett beers on the "beer characteristics that are no longer acceptable to me" chart.

Personally, I like my beer like I like my violence, Domestic.

I get the point. A big alcoholic semi-sweet Zinfandel tastes great, kinda blunting the palate. Lost. A delicate Riesling can be fresh and dry, just like a perfect grape juice, but with a light kick at about 9%.

Taking it to all the soaked wood, I like it. I'm not going that harsh, but I absolutely feel like the best barrel aged imperial stouts are nowhere near the best non-barrel aged ones.

This should not be controversial, the best saisons and biere de gardes I've ever had were in green bottles, and they benefitted from it. Green bottles are blasphemous like wild yeast is blasphemous, it has its place, ppl need to get over it and stop hating.

As rgordon says, London has some great CAMRA type pubs if you know where to find them. Roaming around Berlin or New York (pre-smartphone era) it was nigh impossible to find a pub and yet we knew they were there. But yeah, compared to pretty much the rest of England, London is piss poor for cask ale pub crawly type drinking.

Oh yeah, and if you liked old Speckled Hen you'll love some of the more 'modern' stuff.

Same thing just happened in the Tykes in Taprooms thread. There’s an epidemic of snitches who also want the last word.

No, it is not something I look for - it is something that I make an allowance for under certain circumstances. For example, if I am given a Grolsch, I will expect it and I will still enjoy that beer.

I actually think that this thread is great and should stay open, whether you enjoy the content or not.

Since this started up I feel like there’s a lot less threads along the lines of “Heady Topper - Yuge Disappointment”. People see this thread and plop their “controversial” opinions in here instead. It’s a sort of turd sponge.

It has been a few years since I have been so it would be interesting to taste some newer brews!

In reality OSH wasn't the best I had there, there were a few cask beers which were amazing. But OSH was the best of the common tap ales to me. I just wanted anything that wasn't piss yellow!

    Turd sponge? Fantastic.

Agreed, however, that its presence has seemed to increase the quality of content on the board, in general.

London is the most atypical part of the UK. I only go every few years and feel so relieved not to live there.

I think in 5 year's time Budweiser will be producing a nice range of quality lagers that will be as good or better than what is being offered in the so-called "craft" market. They are slowly testing the waters and from an anecdotal POV, I don't see much resistance.

That'll never happen! They'll keep going after craft breweries, trying to buy up as many as possible. While producing the same yellow fizzy crap.

I find it hard to be convinced that a brewery that now relies on a low-brow consumer base content with Bud Lite and it’s citrus derivatives will really ever focus on craft-type lagers.
