Meant to get this up over the weekend, but was a bit under the weather. Nice showing from the PNW. Chuckanut got a couple, Silver City, Old Schoolhouse, Cloudburst, Figurehead (?), Seattle Ram (I'm assuming Northgate), San Juan Island, 54-40, Ram Lakewood, Loowit, Propolis, and Ten Pin scored for WA.

    Thoughts, comments?

Really nice to see pFriem snag Best Midsize Brewing Company of the Year on top of a Gold for Druif and another Silver for their excellent Pilsner. Well deserved.

Kind of a shame to see personal favorites like Breakside, Barley Brown's, and Block 15 come home without medals, but it's not like that will stop me from enjoying their beers.

Seems like you only noted the (smaller list of) Washington medals. :sunglasses:

I thought it was impressive that Alesong grabbed 2 out of the 3 medals in the Brett Beer category.

10 Barrel entered 3 beers and got 3 medals. Baywindow Berlinerweisse triple crown-ed it, with golds at WBC, NABA, and GABF this year.

Congrats also to Three Creeks, Sunriver, GoodLife, and Worthy. Central Oregon out-medaled Portland.

do we know if they even entered any beers to the competition?

GABF medals are nice, but even an event of that size probably captures 1/1000th of the overall beer scene

Nope, but they have in the past so it would be reasonable to assume they participated in this year's competition as well. Breakside adorns the back wall of their Milwaukie tasting room with all their past awards (including GABF medals), and they seem to have plenty of room for additional hardware. So I would be very surprised if didn't enter any beer in this year's competition.

They've entered in the past and I believe have all medaled.

It's kinda like baseball, yes there's an official strike zone, but every ump has his own. Maybe the judges that would have medaled your stout were off judging IPAs that day.

Not sure about Block 15, but Breakside and Barley Browns did. This competition is massive, and getting skunked once in a while is not an indicator that their beer has decreased in quality in any way. Each competition is a snapshot, and looking at multiple snapshots over years gives a good approximation of performance, but still has many caveats.

[philosophical meandering] I may be slitting my own throat as a competition organizer, but it's important to note that competitions are not comprehensive or perfectly definitive. There's no practical way to evaluate every brewery's entire portfolio over time to make any claim that a beer/brewery is "the best" overall; such a thing doesn't exist as long as we have individual palates. GABF, BoCBA, heck even the Paste magazine lists are attempts to adapt a scientific method for evaluating as large a sample as practical and mitigate the inherent limitations in ranking subjective sensory factors like taste, smell, and appearance. It's nowhere near perfect, but we're trying to get as close to that impossible ideal as we can.[/philosophical meandering]

Ultimately, GABF is a "best of" list, nothing more. And I've never run across a "best of" list that didn't generate controversy. Look at any "10 best guitarists" list. Hell, look at the Oscars.

Yes, medals are nice to win. Who wouldn't want to be recognized by their peers as being among the best brewers in one of the best beer-brewing countries in the world?

But when it comes down to my palate and my money, the only "Best Of" list that matters is the one in my head.

Exactly. My understanding is that there are certain "characteristics" the judges look for in a particular style (still smile over what I read about judging many years ago - the first thing AAL judges look for is the amount of flavor the beer has. Too much flavor and the beer is rejected out of hand, as an abundance of flavor is not seen as consistent with the "style"). Beers that are lacking any of those particular characteristics are rejected out of hand (no chance at medaling), but after that I think it's a pretty subjective call. I've read that the judges discuss the different beers they're sampling, explaining to the rest of the panel what they like and/or don't like about certain beers, before narrowing it down to the final 3.

What Goodlife managed to do this year with "Sweet As" has become increasingly rare (back to back gold medals in the same category). There are just so many entries for each style now, and there are so many subjective factors at play when deciding a medal winner, that it's almost impossible for a beer to stand out from the pack like that two years in succession. The days when a beer like Alaskan Smoked Porter won gold year after year after year... you just don't see that sort of thing any more.

    Amen.

I'm always interested in seeing the medal winners each year, and it's fun to try them to see if I agree with the judge's assessment, but I don't take it too seriously otherwise.

I will say that when a simple, non-adjunct style (think german pils, lager, etc.) gets a GABF gold, i feel fairly confident that its really good.

some of their other categories seem much more subjective and I take the medal with a grain of salt

Not that it matters I guess, but I thought it was kind of funny that none of the beers in the hazy/juicy category (APA's, IPA's or DIPA's) were from New England.

Two thoughts...I was surprised to see no medals from Alaska this year...and nice to see Alaskan Smoked Porter mentioned, great beer. I don’t cellar beer, but I have a couple bottles of the 2011, the year my daughter was born.

I've always been impressed by how age worthy the smoked porter is. I'm not sure they do it any more, but in the past, the Horse Brass would typically put on a few older vintage kegs of the beer around the X-mas holiday. With 4 or 5 years of age, the beer was just flat out delicious.

I'm not sure how Alesong's Terroir: Pinot Gris is considered Brett Beer while Terroir: Pinot Noir is considered Experimental Beer. I don't know what exactly makes a beer experimental, but the bronze went to "Chips & Salsa Cream Ale" which is more of what I was expecting.
