We've had a very strict English only posting policy since day one, simply because the vast majority of our users are from the United States and English is their native language. While this has been great for that segment of our community, it's no doubt discouraged others from joining and contributing. We'd like to change that.

Effectively immediately, posting in your native language is allowed for the following:
    • Beer and place reviews.
    • International forums; accordingly.
    • Private conversations, but post in English if you're conversing with someone whose native language is obviously English.
You can still post in English if you want, which will ultimately be more useful to the greater community, but we'll leave that up to you now.

    Language Detection/Translation
We currently don't provide language detection of translation support, but it's something that we may explore.

    Moderators
Drop me a message if you're interested in becoming an International forum moderator.

    Additional International Forums
Based on demand, we'll also explore creating additional forums in order to support native language discussions for users in those areas

    Updated Code of Conduct
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/community/threads/code-of-conduct.336525/

We're not sure how all of this will evolve, and we'll be relying on your feedback to help guide us, but we're excited to see where it goes and I personally hope that this is the first step in creating a more welcoming community for our international users.

Cheers! ¡Salud! Skål! Kanpai! Salute! Prost! Santé! Kippis! (...)

@Todd This is truly a great idea!

Being my native language is English it personally doesn't effect me. But if my native language where something else, admittedly I would certainly like the option to post in said language.

I'm really glad to see this happening, it will help non-US beers and places in the long run and will build up already great parts of the community in the int'l forums. The disparity in reviews due to language in Quebec alone is pretty incredible when you look at other places in Canada and Quebec beers that have been reviewed elsewhere. Glad to see it! Gracias/Merci/Thank you!

Excellent. I know a number of people in Quebec who have used Ratebeer to rate and review their beers, not because they like the site better, but because they could do it in French.

Now, any chance we get Provincial top beer lists? I realize that it may be difficult because of the way things have been set up, but the fact there is a top list for Wyoming but not for Ontario is unfortunate. Furthermore, because inter-provincial distribution tends to be very limited, the current list is almost useless to someone visiting, say, Nova Scotia when they may only find 2-3 of the beers on the list even available in the province.

    Cheers!

    Spread the word...
I'm definitely not opposed to exploring this, but it might require more ratings from Canadian users to make it useful.

Understood. I figure this is a bit of a chicken/egg scenario. Hopefully the new language allowances will see an uptick in ratings/reviews.

My thoughts would be to have individual lists for BC, Ontario and Quebec, and then regional ones for the Praries, Maritimes and territories.

And, I will spread the word.

    Cheers.

The next step might be different language versions of Beeradvocate. Even english menues could be a problem for potential foreign users. Anyway огромное спасибо! (thanks a lot)

Very cool. It seems there is very little participation from the Japanese looking through local beer reviews while I'm in Japan. Hopefully that'll change!

    Merci pour les non anglophones!

    Thanks for the non-Anglos!

I’m sure it will help BA to reach a different and wider audience. I can only encourage you Todd and Mike to have sort of a translator feature outside of Google like a few social media’s use.

    Cheers and santé!
