One of my last nights in Japan. Dipping into an IPA from what I thought was a water company. Turns out they make beer as well, and this one is pretty good. Canned late last month.

Suntory makes all sorts of beverages, from bottled water to soft drinks and from beer to some of the world's very best whiskys (see Yamazaki, Hakushu, Hibiki and other brand lines). These dudes are everywhere. I've tried several of their mainstream beers (mainly rice lagers and happushus, which were OK) but have not (for sore reason) tried any of their craft ones even though I've seen them around.

Interesting stuff! I've wanted to try some Japanese whiskey for a while, although I'm not sure who makes the bottle I want to try. I'll keep that in mind about Suntory. I'm amazed at the diversity of the beer companies here. Asahi also makes bottled/canned coffee drinks as I found out inside a hour ago. Kirin makes some sort of alcoholic coffee drink too...?

Pretty darn good, although I'm not sure how to declare this in customs and therefore I may not bring any home. It's a very coffee robust Modern Time's Black House or a less light malt Mother's Winter Grind, in other words I like it.

I'm obviously trying things off brand definition, but so far that's going fairly well. Of course, it helps when one of the only words you can read on the can is a familiar brand.

I am drinking Framboise De Amorosa a red wine barrel aged American Wild Ale from the Lost Abbey, ABV 8.50%. The flavor is tart raspberry, green apple, some toasted bread and slight yeast, a hint of red wine, some champagne like qualities including the carbonation. I think it is delicious.

Rich gold color with white cap and lacing.

Aroma of bright citrus (can't really tell what) that's zesty and fresh.

Fullsome flavor of solid malt with citrus hops dominant. Fairly simple flavors but strong and straight forward. Not really complex but there's a lot of flavor packed into this one. I do get a hit of tangerine in the aftertaste.

Medium full texture with balancing carbonation.

I like tangerine and think the idea here is sound but this brew is so hop heavy that the somewhat delicate flavor of that fruit is subsumed by hop goodness. Don't get me wrong, the hops here are tasty, yet I have the lingering impression that tangerine was just used as a descriptor rather than a flavor for what is otherwise a very well constructed IPA.

Although I woke up clear-headed, I figure on starting out the day with a clear/hazy dichotomy...

The beer is pretty decent. It has a nice, soft gold and hazy appearance with a respectable head. The taste reveals a mild biscuit-like backbone with enough zip and spiciness to hold one's interest.

Decided to stop in at Jack’s Abby for lunch and a beer as I was in the area.
This delicious lager is brewed with danko rye malt and is part of their Keller series.

An excellent dark brew from Four Fathers...

A double black IPA (imperial Cascadian ale?) that delivers some excellently rich and flavorful dark grain goodness with a respectable hop bite and sneaky bit of boozy kick.

This is an interesting one. Wasn’t too crazy about it at first, but it’s growing on me. Glad I got a four pack so I can dive into it some more.

Does one drink 'too much beer' early in the morning??? Now there is an interesting proposition...

Coffee beer done right! Light malt base, some caramel, with a decidedly caffeine bent that works...

Pretty berry tinted gold color with white cap and lacing.

Aroma of tart ripe berries which actually remind me more of raspberry than our native dewberries.

Taste is tart ripe berries that themselves carry a depth of flavor that is completely overwhelmed by tartness. A shame really as there is clearly some tasty fruit in there. Fruit does emerge a bit mid palate and after the beer warmed some, but by the finish a sharp lemony sort of acetic tartness has returned and taken over.

Thin to light textured body with balancing carbonation.

In an effort to be fair to this beer I approached it from several angles, trying it cold, letting it sit and warm up a bit, sipping it slowly to see how my palate would adjust and nothing really changed.
