I'm surprised you didn't give them a listen sooner. Been one of my favorite bands for 6 years. Have been posting them quite a bit in my review posts too. Visions is the best album, IMO. I have the whole thing memorized.

Also my favorite 20+ minute epic.

    Cheers to prog metal.

Hopped with Idaho 7, El Dorado, and Azzaca and clocking in at 10.5% this is one I have to be careful with. Too crushable..

Recently I feel there is at least one beer in the San Adams Variety pack that shouldn't have got past QC. This is the one from the Fall pack.[IMG]

Fantastic example of one of my favorite, underrated beer styles: the Black IPA. Complex, yet well-balanced, with lovely roasted malt, chocolate, licorice and citrus hop and pine notes, finishing with a strong, dry bitterness. Rich, creamy mouthfeel as well, just awesome.

I've never posted pictures. I don't know how to post pictures. My wife and I finally went to Decora IA to celebrate our anniversary. Toppling Goliath exceeded our expectations. I'm drinking a King Sue now. I can't imagine a better beer. Other than the Nomad's Bounty, Pompeii, Golden Nugget, or Psuedo Sue that was had around town on tap.

Pale light yellow gold color with white cap and lacing.

Aroma of rich bready malt and floral, spicy hops. Hop brightly is particularly noted in the scent.

Taste is hop forward in a stronger dose than I usually get even in North German styles. Noble hops certainly but used with a generous hand. Malt doesn't get lost in the shuffle but it does stay in the background. Hops are grassy and spicy with a emphasis on the spice. Close to remaining in balance but it's at least 60/40 in favor of the hops.

Yeah I've seen them around, but never actually heard them .... so I'm a little late to the party.

Been giving Ihsahn's new album another listen, and it's growing on me, as well. Is there such a thing as progressive black metal?

Yes. Ihsahn is partially classified as it, so is Ne Obliviscarus, Enslaved.

    https://www.last.fm/tag/progressive+black+metal/artists

Best example is one you likely never heard; they technically haven't broken up, but no new albums for 8 years yet.

Ehh, even though Ne Ob has some black metal moments at time, I wouldn't consider them black metal, really. Enslaved fits that pretty well though, admittedly. I guess Ihsahn has always kind of been like that, but this is a whole new level, IMO.

And I'm discarding symphonic black metal bands as progressive, although I suppose there's an argument there, as well.

What say you, @GreenBayBA ? I feel like we're missing a key member in the black metal discussion. :grinning:

That link you posted is definitely new to me. Sounds like progressive death metal to me. A ton of lower growls, and more driving, rhythmic patterns. Doesn't give me a black metal feel at all except for the occasional high screams. Thanks for the share, Ian!

Beer-wise: still tackling this Rum Barrel Aged Ten Fidy. After that, I'm looking forward to an IPA break before I return to finish off Dan's bottle of Sump.

Damn this is good, even though it's mostly flat by now. (That'll happen when you take a mid-beer nap!)
