The alcohol in a magnum (50.8 oz.) of Fred (10% abv) is roughly equivalent to the alcohol in 8.5 12-ounce bottles of 5% lager.

Over a 5-6 hour period, that's about a bottle and a half of lager per hour. Which is a pretty decent pace, but certainly doable.

Hi, I'm vurt. I like math.

I was actually going at a pretty good clip the first couple of hours (I was a lot younger then), but the last couple of hours things slowed down appreciably. :sunglasses:

okay...had to visit the Used Food Store and see....

They has the Monkless! nice. Best price on Nut Crusher in town. Overall selection was good for a discount grocery. Probably better than most "real" grocery stores in some towns middle America.

And what's this? a sale on Oct. 13 for additional 10% off? Only in Bend, I think...according to the cashier all locations are independently owned.

Hey guys, this might be a silly question, but my wife and I planning to visit Bend around Christmas time.

I was wondering if there was any part of town that should be avoided in looking for accomodations or hotels?

It doesn't seem that way from what I've read but I figured it never hurts to ask. Thanks.

There's a strip of major chain motels on Old 97, just a few minutes walk from downtown, that I've stayed at before with no issues. It does get cold in Bend in winter, so dress appropriately. Enjoy your visit!

I’m sure some of the older motels on 3rd Street/Business 97 have sketchy goings-on, but the only reports I’ve heard from people staying in that area is clean, no-frills rooms to lay one’s head. There is also a lot of newer lodging and airbnb-type rentals across the price spectrum. There are no dangerous parts of town.

Thank you, we are looking forward to it. We are from Boston so we will have the appropriate cold weather clothing with us!

I like Motel West just off 97 and Greenwood..next door is Laughing Planet restaurant..great fresh food.
You can do the walk down Greenwood to the center easily..if tired drop into Silver Moon on the way.
    Its cheap but not nasty.

There's some really nice Air BnB options in Bend if you're down for that style lodging option. Don't forget to get some Barley Browns Pallet Jack if you see it.

I'd avoid Days Inn on 3rd. Been in plenty of cheap motels, but never experience one with a national brand quite so crappy. Usually hotel beds have too many blankets and I kick them all off, but here I woke up shivering. Had just stayed in a Holiday Inn Express a couple weeks before, and it was a luxury hotel by comparison.

Trying a different place for this year's trip.

Yeah we usually do HIE or Hampton in just for consistency. You know exactly what you're getting.

We had a less than stellar AirBnB experience in Portland so probably won't go that way this time around.

Will definitely keep my eye our for a bottle or can (or three) to pack home. Packing a few trashbags and ziploc bags in the luggage.

Just booked here. Literally 1/3rd the price of the national chains. If we don't like it we'll just move after the first night.

Barley Brown's Pallet Jack IPA is draft only, so if you want to take it home you'll have to look for it at places which will fill a crowler or growler.

But yeah, I have to agree with @jakecattleco: Pallet Jack is terrific stuff.

Which really should be no problem in Bend. One or the other of the two Growler Guys should have it on tap I would think.

Big Dog on the south end of town (~5 mins drive from Motel West) has Pallet Jack almost constantly; pints and growlers, but no crowler option.

If Motel West doesn't work out for you, try the Rainbow Motel on Franklin. Easy walking distance to downtown. Definitely in the "budget" category. Clean and basic. Note, the pedestrian underpass on Franklin below the railroad tracks can get a little gross. Transients tend to hang out there and relieve themselves there. It's got that good "subway" smell if you know what I mean. It's our own little taste of the big city. I dont' think the underpass on Greenwood, near Motel West, is as bad.

Lot of useful info here. The wife and I typically stay at the Shilo Inn, but increasingly have started looking for alternatives in the budget rate category (as the place tends to sell out most weekends now).
