this only furthers your point, but the $1.47/oz number does in fact include tax

I'd guess it's about the equivalent of a $30 bomber.

Amen. Most beer enthusiasts go through the different stages. The stage where you don't care about every release is enjoyable.

I actually have a different point of view. I enjoyed my first years of drinking good beer more than I do now. Not that I dislike it now, but back then I just drank whatever was new at the store I used to buy from. I prided myself on trying almost everything the store stocked at a given point in time. That included trying tons and tons of different styles of beer. I really enjoyed the variety of it back then, and then when more 'rare' beers came out, they were insanely easy to get a hold of.

Now, there are obviously better things about the scene now, but there are also worse aspects of it. I'd be lying if I said the quality hasn't improved overall, but with that has come a lot of the negatives we complain about.

I still love beer, I think it takes a more conscious effort on my part as a consumer though. Like you mentioned, even though I didn't end up buying a ticket for this release, there was still a FOMO there for me. There are SO many of these releases now too. I can tell myself over and over it's not worth it (which I truly believe), but it takes a conscious effort to put that into action. So I still love it, and it's a lot better in some ways, but back years ago it was just so much simpler, if that makes sense.

I think for me there's been so many beers that I've chased that haven't lived up to any billing and certain beers I don't have to chase that are miles better than those. Let alone with 2 very small kids, and not getting out and about much, knocking out a bomber - 750 of a 10+% beer on my own is, lets say a challenge. I've found myself searching for decent 12oz beers at a fair price. CW stuff, Cafe Deth, even the bourbon counties are a manageable size for me on a weekend night with the wife. With 2 kids do I really want to wait in line for hours at a release for a beer thaqt may or may not be any decent when I could be with my boys? It's just not worth it. My time is my most valuable resource, and chasing beer is not high on my list of things to do anymore. Then there's the price. MORE is clearly just testing where the price elasticity is, and good for them. Didn't get a ticket, didn't try. Maybe after the shitlords get their max profitz I'll snag a bottle on the secondary for a reasonable price.

You know from past posts that I wholeheartedly agree that the scene has gotten worse in many, many aspects, especially attitude-wise. Fortunately, the scene is so much bigger now that I find it easy to avoid the worst parts of it or at least minimize my interaction with those dregs. I also think most people on the Chicago forums are pretty nice, so hopefully they aren't Jekyll-Hyding when they get out in the real world. Still, I do think it's a bummer that we've lost a lot of the friendliness and community that there was 3-5 years ago.

Quality-wise, of course it has gotten a lot better, so I agree there, too.

I guess I've just come back around full-circle. I used to just buy interesting things off the shelf when I first started, and now I do the same again. It helps that I'm really into lagers, which are really never hard to come by, but ever since I stopped obsessively trading and ticking, the joy of beer has come back. There are still certain beers that I feel I really need to get, but they're usually spaced out far enough that I can dedicate just a little bit of effort every now and again and succeed in getting them. If not, oh well, I can substitute in a different release that's just around the corner, or, worst comes to worst, trade/buy on secondary for the exact beer that I want since I have more money due to not buying every single release that there is.

It also helps that because the beer quality as a whole is so much better than it used to be that great things sit on shelves to such a degree that I can find more than comparable substitutes for things I might miss out on, and through the magic of blind tasting, I've found in some cases that the shelf beer is actually better than the über-hyped new thing.

I don't really find it much effort to not care about every little release (especially with some of the pricing that we've talked about), but obviously I understand where you're coming from.

    Cheers.

Also 0 for this week. So it goes. I'll make up for it next Friday though. That's shaping up to be a solid day. I almost want to join FB just so I can gawk at the train wreck of butthurt beer nerds. Almost.

It won best in show at Fobab so I think the pricing conversation is kind of silly. 3 Floyd’s charged $40 for a BA barleywine and a BA porter with less griping. Again to each his own but this release is not the hill to die on IMO

Agree. Today was the first time I will get some of any of the Henna releases. I was at the right place, right time. I simply have better things to do than sit on the prairie path at 5AM every 2 months. Mix it up. Do a normal lineup a couple time; last minute ticket sales the next etc. This give DIFFERENT people chances to try this stuff. And I don't want to hear "I've sat in line at every release and this clearly shows you don't care about me.."

Everything you say is fair but 5am on the path is either intentionally hyperbolic or it is out of touch with their releases. You could’ve walked up and bought Henna 4 at 11:30. Even the BA beers were available well into later morning.

What don't you get about earning your beer, bro? If you can't put in the time and effort of three hours in line, you don't deserve it as much as me.

    (This is sarcasm.)

#Wojdud? I kid. Not bad but that's what you get when you look for word on the street. Word on the path is much more accurate in this instance.

Agree. Also, when you realize that every beer on the high end more or less kinda tastes the same in regards to style.

When it comes down to it, is there really that large of a difference beween BCS and Assassin? Sure Assassin may be slightly better, but they’re still very similar beers. If you were given a blind pour, I’d reckon I’d be just as satisfied with either one.

I've had Term Oil which a lot of TG fans describe as "Assassin-lite" which was enough for me to know I didn't need to seek out Assassin.

The differences between lots of these beers is so marginal.
