My in-laws left yesterday after a five day visit. They were the first visitors to our new home, and we had a great visit. I don’t know how other folks on this site feel about their significant other’s parents, but I imagine it runs the gamut. I happen to like mine and we get along quite well. I’ve identified a few reasons for this. My wife is their youngest (and most favorite) daughter and I think they appreciate how much my wife and I care for each other. My father-in-law is an avid golfer, so we have that in common. We all enjoy playing card games, and that is a great way to pass the time while socializing. The biggest reason, however, is that their other two sons-in-law are, to put it bluntly, idiots. So anyone who is near normal comes out looking pretty good in comparison.

My father-in-law is a scotch drinker, but he is always ready to try a beer. When we visit them in Michigan he always wants to know if there are particular beers I want. He has even been known to scout out a new brewery to see if I might like a visit there.

When I drink my new beer today, I will toast my in-laws, thanking them for the wonderful daughter who became my wife. When you are drinking your new beer, for whatever reason, perhaps you would like to tell us about it. Tell us how it looks, how it smells, how it tastes, and how it feels in your mouth. Then give an overall impression of the beer.

    Happy Sunday, all!

    Stone woot stout
    ..pours a solid black
.. medium light carbonation, with a thick, slightly creamy above average body
...aroma is roasted pecan, dark chocolate, malt and espresso
..Taste is very similar, just a bit sweet with a little sour/bitterness from what felt like the pecans. The coffee, chocolate ,malt all blended nicely without any particular flavor dominating
...overall it was an excellent beer and I enjoyed how the pecan showed up[IMG]

Thank you for starting this at midnight, there are 24 hours in a Sunday.

I did a blind review of this new beer. I recieved it from @LloydDobler as part of the NBS BIF

    Here is my review:
    4.03/5 rDev 0%
    look: 4.5 | smell: 4 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Thank you to @LloydDobler for sending me this .
When reviewed I was blind as to what it was.

A:Straw yellow with a good bit of haze. Solid finger or so of head but it quickly subsides.
S: Pineapple, hint of horse blanket and coriander and all spice
T: Very tart. Pineapple, green apple, under ripe kiwi. Loads of funk.
MF: Dry. Mouthfeel is a little odd. Like it is missing a middle. As if you were listening to music with the treble and bass all the way up and the mid range all the way down.
O: Very good but Maybe a little too sour. I would like a little something more in there to offset the sourness. The earthy funkness that lingers throughout is very nice.

    and here is the reveal:

    Transient Softly Spoken Ryes

    Rye Double Dry Hopped IPA

    7.5%

I was not going to review this beer, but rather I was going to drink it while playing Super Mario 64, and sipping the side car you see. But then the midnight edition of NBS popped up so I figured I might as well give the beer some proper thought.

I received a number of Transient pale ales in a recent BIF box from @Smokesnotes and I have not reviewed any of them...until now.

Please do ignore the glass of rye. For the sake of a clean review, I’m withholding the rye for the end.

Appearance: This beer comes in with a hazy, golden amber color. Off white head settles to a half finger and leaves some scant lacing along the glass. It’s quite attractive. Not too far down the murky side of the spectrum. No visible carbonation.

Aroma: The rye is certainly present with notes of rye bread, unsweetened iced tea, white pepper, herbal, earthy, bay leaf. A hint of fresh lemon and orange citrus. The aroma is enhanced as the beer warms. I’m really starting to get some more prominent hoppy notes melding with the rye for sweeter canned pineapple syrup and some candied orange peel. Amazing how this beer has opened up.

Taste: A spicy, bready, grainy, malt flavor profile. It’s a bit nutty and it’s quite dry. The hops are subtle, but I definitely get some earthy and sweet orange citrus notes as the beer opens up.

Mouthfeel: Super smooth and creamy. Really great feel.

Overall: At first I thought this beer was too subtle for me. But as it warmed up, the hops really started to shine through and meld nicely with the rye. Out of the several Transient beers I’ve had so far this one is my favorite.

With that, I’ll leave you to it, BA, while I sip my side car, wake up Mario, and try to add on to my 86 stars. Perhaps I’ll be back with one more before calling it an evening. If not, I’ll definitely see you here on NBS later today.

This is being reviewed blind as to who brewed it and what it is. After first sip it is obviously a Gose
A: Hazy yellow. A effervescent white head forms two fingers that quickly subside and disappear.
    S: Seawater apple and pear
T: Salty and sour. pear, pineapple, citrus fruits, There is also some sweetness there
MF: Very tart-almost puckering. There is a smooth backbone here.
O: This is really terrific. It is a very sour gose that is balanced with a sweetness. I could drink this one quite often.

So what is this mystery beer?

I can totally get down on this thread at this hour. My kind of jam 23 minutes into the new day here in snowy Billings Montana. We got a new pup a week ago today. She’s now a partner to the boy we got from the same place last year around the same time, both Rez Dog rescues. Terror x2 now at the house but so much fun to see the life and energy exuded. Second time in 41 years I’ve had two dogs at the same time but they were ten years apart before. So far a great dynamic. I work at a local restaurant and meet quite a few regulars but my favorites have always been a family from KY with a boy who at 11 was driving drag cars at the local strip. He’s 15 now and just made Eagle Scout a couple months ago to which I was graciously invited to the ceremony. His mom just a few years older than myself was diagnosed with colon cancer a little over a year ago and I found out tonight she lost her battle at the end of last month. Absolute cosmic injustice and she was one of the best people I’ve ever met on this earth. Been processing emotion and thought this evening and definitely didn’t need one more beer but it’s new to me and wanted to contribute to the thread properly. Life is unjust and unfair at times but it’s the one beautifully tragic existence we get that we can remember while we still draw breath so I’ll still take it over the option of nothingness. The beer is Consider Yourself Hugged, a 12% imperial stout with coffee and peanut butter. Overall a 4.5 out of 5 scale for me and the hug is well appreciated. Cheers BA fam.

This is Ithaca Beer's Bullseye Red Ale. I was pleasantly surprised at how versatile this beer is with food. Often at this time of year we see only festbiers and pumpkin beers. This one was a lovely seasonal addition to an already outstanding year.

Pours ark chestnut brown, copper red. Autumn hues with a caramel stripe. fresh and malty peppered with hops. citrusy and pine. Beautfful appearance. Tan foam. Does nto smell the same as a brown ale but it does have what you might call mild coffee notes. Toast bread. The extra malt allows for a broader use of hops and lets you see soem malty complexity. Fresh pine on toasty malt. Good for a wet hop style. Malty breaddy and crisp with malty complexity . The malt was going toward the fruitier flavors that malt can show you but its the hops that sensationalize this beer with lots of their mouthfeel. A bit of slickness, their oils make the beer seem to glide gracefully and show you all that toasty malt and then surprise you with citrusy and piney hops. outstanding character, Clean beer. No bitterness from alcohol or mouthfeel from alcohol. Just a bit of hop slickness surprises the palate after it beholds all that breaddy malt. Pairs with lots of fall dishes. Rosemary can be introduced here with its piney woody scent. .

This is a pub favorite , cantina beer. Lots of dishes complimented it. Also it paired nicely with the pilsner either before or after.

Cheers @lordofthewiens for an early start! I can dig the early NBSundays. I'm still at work but wanted to get some thoughts down before I cracked my New Beer later today.

I am my father in law's favorite son in law because as you can guess, his only son in law. He is slowly experimenting in the world of craft beer. For the longest time when my family would visit them in Grand Rapids, MI, we'd go to Founders and he'd always order "the IPA". It was familiar to him and he didn't want to embarrass himself by repeating his mistake the first time he went to Founder's by trying to order an Amstel Light. Turns out, he doesn't even care for IPAs. He has discovered dark beers and loves barrel aged imperial stouts, especially CBS. Side note and kind of funny short story...a friend from out of town visiting GR over the holidays dropped off a box of beer for me and I the same at my in laws house. As a joke he slipped in a Miller Lite to my friend's box hoping no on would notice until unpacking.

Cheers to father in laws and their daughters! Be back later for my beer.

Happy Oh, Boy, It's JoBoy's New Beer Sunday (Week 712)!

I seem to be the impetus for the Midnight (Eastern) start on the even-numbered weeks & I am happy to participate whenever I am awake and cognizant. Last Saturday was my 35-year high school reunion & I had an MRI on Monday up in Hershey, both of which caused me to miss my shift as barback at Columbia Kettle Works 2nd Gear. I will be on today from 1030 until whenever I am first cut or 1630, whichever comes first.

Things are slow at CKW2G right now because of construction. They are in the middle of a complex with La Cocina Mexicana still under construction and Zoetropolis Art House, Theatre & Distillery with the latter under construction. There will eventually be a courtyard & patronage, but for now, it is slow.

JoBoy's Brewpub is in downtown Lititz, but when they originally opened, they were located in Manheim, both here in Lancaster County. It is owned by Jo & Jeff "Boy" Harless, she being a county native & he a retired USAF Master Sergeant who agreed to retire back here with her after his career. Lititz was named "Best Small Town in America" at one point & beer is prevalent in this burg with The Bull's Head/GEN Sutter Inn, JoBoy's & Appalachian BC all in close proximity.

The move has provided them greater space & as a result, they are bottling some of their beers, especially their flagships. I bought a Variety sixer on my last visit & having gotten pics approved, I am ready to go. Some will be new in bottles, others outright new for me, beginning with:
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/22459/70571/?ba=woodychandler#review

Now, it is back to Rack City, followed by my 1st shift at 2nd Gear & my eventual return. See yinz then!

    Howdy NBS,

As stated in a couple posts in WBAYDN, the summer was extended until mid October here. Why not. We are off for 4-5 cold, rainy and snowy months afterwards and we might enjoy while it last after all.

Today’s new beer is an offering from Evil Twin brewing, NO HERO:

A pint poured into a founders glass leaving a 1,5 inch brownish head.

Smells chocolate, raisin (grape?) other berries.

Taste is again dark chocolate and a hint of caramel... well balanced bittersweet aromas.

Overall I enjoyed this oatmeal stout offering from EvilTwin. Quaffable, thick, flavorful and pretty delicious, having it for a brunch on a Sunday late morning I doubt I could have had something better at the moment.

    Cheers!

Alright so mystery beer from @akatz821 i shared this with a group of guys at a weekly tasting. We all could smell the vanilla at bottle open and we all figured it would be an imperial Stout. I had a pretty good guess on what it was after a sip. I've seen some post this beer and thought it sounded very interesting and i figured since i got some other half beers this was a good chance. So i got lucky. Otherwise i never would have guessed. Thanks for the chance at this beer sir. Your tape game is spot on to so i had to rip the bag off. Here's the review. Oh and another beer from @akatz821 makes an appearance in the back ground. That was another excellent one and I'll throw that review on here later as i haven't finished the review yet

Pours dark brown. Foamy, short brown head lasts a little.

Smells vanilla, vanilla extract, chocolate and sugar cookie.

Tastes sweet vanilla that is almost artificial, light chocolate, hint of dark fruit and hint of roast malt. Finish is sweet with vanilla. Lighter body and smooth lower carbonation.

New Beer Sunday: American Wild Ale

Mornin’ NBSers, with an alert for folks who still have warm weather in front of them and want a refreshing beer to go with the weather. Also a special thanks to @lordofthewiens for his start up this morning and the new twist a midnight (East Coast Time) brings to one of this site's longest running traditions--the Sunday virtual bar where like-minded folks gather to share and chat. As for my in-laws, I've always gotten along well with them and always felt welcome. Plus there have been, over the years, a couple of temporarily difficult financial times where they were able and willing to provide some moral support and assistance. Adding to that, they raised my wife. What more could one want?

The weather here today is expected to be partly sunny with a thin high cloud cover and a high temperature in the low 60s. A welcome change from the rain showers and cloudy skies both yesterday and tomorrow.

This morning’s new beer is from Avery Brewing and is called Bug Zapper

As usual my review, subject to revision until the beer is finished or breakfast has started, which ever comes first, can be found here.

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/30/292393/?ba=drtth#review

The refreshing, drinkable beer has aromas and flavors of ginger, lime and mint, all backed up by some malt. On the whole this is a light, enjoyable, drinkable and refreshing beer. (Just as the brewer intended.)

    Cheers, all!

Love me some rye. Woodford Reserve. It’s good but I find it too sweet for my tastes. I prefer Bulleit Rye over it. I recently had High West Rendezvous Rye for the first time and will probably be picking up a bottle of that next.

    What’s your preference?

NRS would be a problem for my wallet and liver haha

    Sippin’ on Sunshine!

So, what does Sunshine taste like? Well, today I am going to find out via Lawson’s Sip of Sunshine IPA.

I have heard of Lawson’s which has an interesting formal business name of Lawson’s Finest Liquids but since they have a limited distribution area (Vermont and Rhode Island) I have heretofore never had any of their beers. Today I am drinking one due to a generous benefactor.

Since I am basically not well informed on Lawson’s I did a bit of web research:

“Lawson’s Finest is a small batch artisanal microbrewery located in Warren, Vermont. Their goal is to provide local brews of the highest quality and freshness, while crafting unique new recipes and emulating the best of widely appreciated styles. Lawson’s beer is custom crafted in small batches at a modest production facility tucked in the woods, on the east flank of Lincoln Mountain. Their flagship brews, Sip of Sunshine and Super Session, are brewed and canned at Two Roads Brewing in Stratford, CT.”

So, interestingly the beer I am about to drink is brewed by the ‘partner’ brewery of Two Roads Brewing in Connecticut.

Below is a description of this beer from BA:

“This lupulin-ladin India Pale Ale is packed with juicy tropical fruit character, bright floral aromas and delectable layers of hop flavor. Pour mindfully, inhale deeply and enjoy a tropical vacation in a glass. Always store cold, enjoy fresh and stay cool!”

I wonder if this will be a ‘NEIPA’ type beer? Well, let’s find out!

Served in my Gulden Draak tulip glass:

    Appearance:

Golden yellow with a slight bit of haze. A big fluffy white head.

    Aroma:

Mostly tropical fruit aromas but there is some citrus and even a very tiny bit of dank. Lots going on here!

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with predominantly tropical fruit flavor but pleasantly accompanied with citrus and yup that tiny hint of dank as well. As Shrek would say: “layers”. There is a firm bitterness to this beer.

    Mouthfeel:

This beer has a medium body with an off dry finish. There is also a very subtle aspect of ‘juiciness’ to this beer as well.

    Overall:

I think this beer is very good! There is lots going on in “layers” and it all works well together.

Assuming this beer properly captures the flavor of sunshine I would describe sunshine as tasting like ‘layers’ of tropical fruit with some citrus and just a very tiny bit of dank.

Due to the firm bitterness, the mostly clear-ish appearance and just a very subtle nod to ‘juicy’ this beer is closer to the IPA spectrum of a West Coast IPA vs. being a Juicy/Hazy IPA.

Cheers to the folks of Lawson’s & Two Roads for producing a tasty sunshine beer!!

Mystery beer #1 from NBS BIF #8 and @Bum4ever!

    The bottle:

The cap is marred and wrapped with electrical tape, so no help there. The aluminum foil protects its vital fluids from alien intervention.

OK - from the appearance and the aroma, probably not a schwarzbier, bock, or duppelbock. Aroma and taste suggest imperial stout or RIS.

    Review before unwrapping the bottle.

Stored at 42 degrees and served at 42 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 48 degrees.
    Appearance – 4.25.
Body – Dark brown/black, opaque. When held to the light, a bit of brown appears under the ring.
Head – Average (Maximum three cm, controlled center pour), tan, medium density, average retention, diminishing to a three mm ring fed by effervescence and a thin partial layer.
    Lacing – None.
First pour – Dark brown, slight haze.
Aroma – Roasted malt, chocolate, molasses or sorghum, brown sugar(?). Weakens but remains evident for the duration.
Flavor – Begins moderately sweet with roasted malt and a molasses aftertaste. Sweetness drops but no bitterness from the roasted malt appears. Raspberry? No hops. No alcohol, no diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide.
Palate – Medium to full, almost creamy, soft carbonation.
Impression and interpretation – This seems to be a molasses-based imperial stout or RIS. The ephemeral raspberry could be a delusion.

    The reveal:

Damn! Almost totally wrong, except for the word "Imperial". The label says "Imperial porter brewed with pecans and walnuts, aged in rum & bourbon barrels with Madagascar vanilla, then finished with cacao nibs and toasted pecans". At a higher temperature, perhaps I'd have detected the bourbon, but the rum and vanilla lie outside my taste spectrum. As for the nuts, I eat them by the unshelled bag, but I can never detect them in beer. Oh well, at least I got to tick a new brewery and a damn good new beer.

Hello all. Hitting an early entry today and I will follow up later with another, after I get home from breakfast. It’s a cold one here in northern Indiana. The sun cracked the sky and turned the frost into morning dew.

I’ve had a lot of different beers from Revolution but never this one.

    Coffee Eugene
    [IMG]
This pours a very dark brown with a fluffy mocha colored topper of foam. Nose is of milk chocolate covered roasted coffee beans. Upon my first sip I can’t help but notice how creamy this is. Very frothy, like a coffee/chocolate malt. Thicker than I would have expected from a porter. In the taste, what I thought was going to be a heavier bitterness from the coffee was actually softened a lot from the sweetness. Light lingering coffee grounds and bakers chocolate. Really caught me off guard how much I enjoyed this one. Thanks @Franfab for the opportunity to try this. I will be on the lookout in the future.

I rarely do this NBS contribution, but since the latest version of Cumbre's Project Dank, now in seasonal can offerings, is out - why not?
    Autumnal edition. 7.5% ABV.
    Appearance
is way clearer, less hazy, than the summer edition of a few months back.
Aroma is as dank and grassy but has a little more...tropical hop action going on. Hard to say, but the ...
Taste gives away more of that mango/pineapple hop profile with each sip, and it's not overplayed with any cloying fake dry fruit taste that some of the NZ/AUS hops can give off...
Mouthfeel is great, much smoother, good carbonation but not overly so (could use a few more bubbles) but just another smooth criminal.
Overall, another great 'version' of P. Dank from Cumbre. Jeff and his team really seem to nail this each time I've had it. Never been let down by this rotating hop monstrosity. Interesting to see and taste the differences between the summer and fall editions, too. Seek it out! About $16-17/4pk however. :slight_frown:
    Cheers all!
