No kidding about the branding! Even reading what you said I had to look two or three times to see they were different beers.

Very similar designs! And strangely I like both beers about the same. Ddh Broc is a tongue pleaser.

Happy New Beer Sunday to all of you!

I would like to say thanks to everyone in the NBS BIF as it has proved to be an awesome time once again.

I have so many new beers to rate for you folks from these awesome BAs....

    @2beerdogs

    @Bum4ever

    @Blackop555

@strohme2 (today’s is courtesy of him)

These BAs along with all the others in NBS BIF 8 have shown once again what an awesome community and people you all are.

I have been battling a slight cold so hopefully I’m not too off today.

Since Justin’s box somehow got delivered after the mail yesterday and didn’t get noticed till today, it happened to be at perfect drinking temperature. So I grabbed one right from his box and poured it into a glass. How awesome is that?

    The beer

    My feeble review

And just to show how different everyone’s palettes are.....

@CanConPhilly I could not detect any meat, garlic or onions from this beer. Just the awesomeness of one if my favorite hop varieties!

Cheers all and hope to see you folks again today!

Checking in with my first new beer today! This one thanks to @Roguer from the most recent NBS BIF.
12 ounce can, unsure on date as I forgot to look and it’s already in the recycle cart. Poured into tulip.
Pours a pale golden yellow, fizzy half finger of head that left just as quickly as it came.
Interesting nose of lemon, lighter and tangy watermelon jolly rancher, dough. The taste is soft, bready, cantaloupe, honeydew more than watermelon. Hints of cucumber. Not sure how to rate the taste. Sticks more on the melon side but not watermelon. It’s not offensive in any way.
Light, low carbonated. Melon adds some lingering softness on the finish.
Hmm, I won’t say avoid. If this was the only beer in emergency situations, I’d make do. Hey, it’s a gimmick beer and those count as ticks too! Thanks Andrew!

[IMG] Poured into a 13 oz Funk Brewing Teku Glass canned on 9/21/18. Pours like a glass of OJ with a big fluffy 2 plus finger head that leaves beautiful marks of lace with excellent retention. 5

Smell guava, papaya, pineapple, tangerine, and some grapefruit rind. Paradise! 5

Taste follows makes you want to go to an Island and never ever come back, guava, papaya, tangerine, pineapple, and the most perfectly balanced bitterness that may have ever touched these lips. Insanely Juicy! 5

Mouthfeel a big medium, soft on the palate with perfect carbonation, not dry but sticky from the boat loads of hops in this gem, and at 7.7% I am trying to slow myself, but holy lord it is off the charts. 5

Overall I am not kidding when I say this may be the most amazing NEDIPA I have ever had and I have had most of the greats. Nobody is worthy of this juice, but I will try and be better and the guy that gave me this can, I don’t feel I could ever give him something that can match it. 5

    New Taxman beer #2
This is their take on fresh hops with a focus on local products
    [IMG]
    The review:
12oz canned 9/27/18 (17 days ago) poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass at fridge temp 7% ABV 60 IBU. The beer pours hazy, nearly opaque, in a "dirty blonde" amber. The head is off white and recedes to a cap and leaves some lacing. The aroma is a blend of honey, grassy hops, wheat and farmhouse yeast that is not altogether inviting. The taste is semisweet wheat and honey with some strong grassy & floral hop bitterness holding the line against excessive sweetness. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with less than medium carbonation and a semi dry finish. Overall, very good and better as it warms. Belgian IPAs are tricky. This one comes out alright and does a nice job of tying in the harvest theme with all of the local ingredients.

I will note that Taxman has made a change to their can dating which is an improvement. Dates are now on the side label under the UPC. Before they were hit and miss printed on the bottom of the cans. The Bean Counter I reviewed earlier was canned 9/24/18, so I will have to update that review. Cheers to easier to read can dates and cheers to the new beer in your glass!

Greetings fellow NBSers! A bright, sunny, warm if you're in the sun-chilly if you're in the shade, day here in the Fourth Corner. I've been working my way through the boxes of beers from @nc41 and @thebeers in NBS BIF #8; Halle Berry's Pet Octopus. I'll be back later with some new brews, but until then here's what I've had this week:

Today's new beer is an English Barleywine from Deschutes Brewery. It is 2014 Reserve Mirror Mirror. The label says best after 2/24/15.
In my teku, the beer was a burgundy color with a small tan head that was apparent only at the circumference of the glass.
Aroma of caramel/molasses, dark fruit, and wine.
Taste followed the nose. Toffee, dark fruit, red wine, and some oak.
    Medium-bodied, somewhat sticky mouthfeel.
    Nice beer!

:joy: That's hilariously bad. I'd never consider FO to be a brewery who have easy-to-distinguish beers based on their labels anyway (they're all about weird abstract art and most of their output is hoppy beers of slightly different stripes), but that is just silly. I really liked the German Attitude version(?) of their Keller, though.

I have three new beers today. Nothing really tying them together, but this is the only one of the three that isn't hop-focused, so I figured I'd throw it back before getting into the pale ales.

This is Uinta's Mango Lime Pilsner. I don't think I ever tried the regular Lime Pilsner, but this sounds quite interesting. Don't think I've had another fruited beer that explicitly uses these two fruits in conjunction. How will it work out on what I assume to be a clean, crisp pilsner base? Let's find out!

Pours a lightly hazy light yellow-gold color with very intense streams of carbonation building up to a fluffy white head of loosely-gathered bubbles that seems to sink pretty quickly to a light foam atop the body of this lager. The surface has some small islands of foam as well, but overall, it's not the best looking beer I've seen lately. Would like to see some more head retention, especially considering the strong carbonation. Oh well.

The nose is very strong mango with some light herbal hop notes, crackery pilsner malt and a light tinge of citrus (which I assume must be the lime flavor added). There are some side-lined notes of mandarin orange and guava as well, building off the adjunct additions, but overall it's pretty straightforward. Smells refreshing and fruity... solid.

The flavor profile is, again, hefty mango and other tropical like fruits upfront with a pretty plain, slick mid-palate. The finish has a lot of orange peel and lime flavor; pretty crisp but also maybe a little too sweet for my taste. The fruit flavors are heavy-handed and don't feel attuned to the main structural malt component of the beer. In other words, it's more "fruit lager" than "pilsner." That said, it's pretty gulpable and enjoyable for what it is. I feel like I'm probably a couple months behind on this one (best-by date somewhere within a month from now) but I've never seen it before last week. Probably a distribution problem... which is a shame because, even though it's not amazing, it would've made a great lakeside beer during the summer.

One local DDH pale ale and one hazy IPA from an unlikely brewery coming up soon... stay tuned!

    Thrash 'til death!

Next up I grabbed this one from the fridge and almost did not open it thinking I should save it to share with my buddy who loves sours, gose, berliner and saisons but I opened it anyway. I think he is going to be mad because this one is great. Leelanau Brewing Good Harbor Golden Ale aged in Oak Barrels. This beer was sent to me by @strohme2 via NBS BIF #8, the flavors are really rich lots of oak and vinegar with a touch of delicate fruit. I really wish I had waited and shared this it is just that good. Thanks Justin!!!

Appearance 4 - Pours hazy golden color with no head at all few spots of lacing around the glass.

Aroma 4.25 - Big oak aroma, vinegar, apricots, pretty sweet aroma. Nice yeast with a little funk.

Taste 4.5 - Really full flavored, vinegar is a little more subdued, lots of oak and yeast. Funky earthy tart up front with a little sweetness on the end.

Overall 4.5 - Medium bodied, tart slightly puckering nice dry finish.

Overall 4.41 - A really nicely done beer. Big oak light funkiness very easy drinking. Sometimes it is tough for me to drink a really vinous beer this is wonderfully balanced.

Pulling off the cover he attached, I see that my mystery beer is actually from Scotland!! And is not smoked (although suprisingly that information has not changed my perception of it) I immediately smelled the bottle and got the same woody sweetness.
A very tasty beer and ironically (due to my hesitation to drink it) the lowest ABV beer of the whole box.
Really delicious and I gotta say that the only thing that changed in my mind knowing what it was was my appreciation for it went up a bit seeing how low the ABV is. Talk about being "substantive-but-quaffable"! It is nuts to me to have this much flavor and this nice of a feel it a four-something percent beer.

    Thanks again @Ozzylizard !

I've still got a can of that for my own NBS review. I had no idea if it was remotely good or not - but it's a local, it's gimmicky, and I love the name.

I will say the base version - the yellow can Emergency Drinking Beer - was a very pleasant surprise based on what I was expecting.

I ventured out today while my son is in a work meeting (drop off/pick up thing) so having one at nearby Sedona Taphouse seemed like a good idea. My only selection though, not so much good idea

    Ardent IPA X

    3.56/5 rDev -8%
    look: 3.75 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.25 | feel: 3.25 | overall: 3.75

Looks pretty underwhelming, virtually no head lets the murky brownish orange beer to breath a bit I guess. On that note, one of the bright spots of this is a sweet, flavorful nose that brings mango and tangerine to the forefront before a decent earthy bitter settles in. Taste goes downhill a bit, largely due to a comically thin body that can’t support what flavor is there for very long at all. Before the flavor fades off there is a bit of ripe mango before seltzer water becomes the dominant flavor. Exit is mostly clean, save for a hint of bitterness on the tongue. Kiddie pools have more depth. Just saying.

    Sounds amazing!

That was my thought as well. If it was a ploy by him it worked. I looked and there were a couple other reviewers that noted smoke but I'm not convinced that my expectations didn't fuck up my perception. I love tasting blind specifically because of stuff like this.

Good afternoon NBSers! We've got a beautiful fall day here in Michigan, so time to do a little grillin. And what's grillin without drinkin?

This black lager from @JBowenGeorgia was calling my name :

The Silent World from Creature Comforts. I've had (and thoroughly enjoyed) a few of their IPAs, and was really excited to see what they can do with a less hyped/ trendy style.

This pours jet black with a thick foamy head, almost like what you would expect to see from a nitro pour. Strong retention on the head and beautiful lacing. The nose is, well, a roasty lager. Some nice roasty notes over cracker and what I tend to identify as sweet corn. On the tongue it is definitely roasty malt forward with just a hint of lager sweetness behind. Surprisingly crisp, clean finish.

I'm really enjoying this, and am happy to have tried it. Thanks John!
