So I got nostalgic and picked up 2 12ers of Schlitz because had it a year ago and found it better than PBR. After finishing the case I found that roughly half the beers had a burnt veggie taste on the finish. Awful and had to drain pour a few. The majority were really good solid Adjuncts. If there are any Schlitz drinkers out there could you please weigh in cause it has me bugged a bit. Doesn’t make sense it was a bad lot cause many of the beers were fine.

Amazing you didn't have to drain pour all of them !

Used to drink that back in the late 70s and was decent then. In fact I would steal a few cans from my uncles bar fridge when I was maybe 12 back in 72 and would drink them in the yard. LOL!

Schlitz? Wow I honestly can't remember the last time I consumed any of that particular liquid. Honestly I never even see it around anymore.

I don’t see it often but picked it up out of town. Had a BB date 12/18 so not stale. Won’t buy again but just wondered if anyone had similar experience. I’m a beer lover and drink mostly craft lagers and IPAs but like a Nascar beer every so often.

I enjoy a few here and there, nothing to write home about but they are what they are. Sometimes I need a break from heavy beer or IPA, so a ice cold PBR or Miller Light is tasty!
    Cheers
Regarding why you got the off flavor it just could be that you had your fill and were ready to be done with them. I get this way a lot when having a lot of the same item over and over, it goes from good to why am I doing this, lol.

Picking up a sixer of Schlitz and drinking one, maybe two, before realizing you'd made a mistake is 'nostalgia.' Picking up two 12-packs is a psychotic break.

Nostalgia: Schlitz was my first beer. My Uncle Andy slipped me a can while my mother was out of the house. I was in first grade.

Back in the 60s Schlitz was the first choice of many and having consumed a good number of them back then I understand why.

Today it just is what it is.

Not here anymore, but back in the day it was slumming it. If I'm feeling nostalgic I'm going simple Bud, or PBR.

My grandfather used to let me drink that when I was like 5. Cause he was an awesome influence on me. Pretty sure I haven't even seen it since then. And I'm old as hell.

In about 1968 my Dad used to keep Schlitz and Munich Lowenbrau on hand weekly. He came home from golf one day, checked out the fridge and mentioned it appeared that I liked Lowenbrau better than Schlitz, and with a broad wink. That guy was so cool.

70’s were a Schlitz time for me living about a hour away from Milwaukee. You know the tag line if you are this old.
Liquor stores closed 9pm per state law. Picked up more than a couple 6 packs from bars for a night cap. 18 drinking age.
The Kristofferson “ Star is Born” movie made drinking Schlitz cool.
I’ve had Diet Cokes from 12 packs that were flat while others were fine. Modern canning techniques. But an off taste? Probably happens more than we know just a bit more subtle difference.

    Edit: can’t remember last time
I had one. Rumor was the recipe has
been tweaked, like in a bad way.

So of the 24 Shlitz you bought, some were tasty and some were bad? Did you isolate the bad ones to one of the 12packs vs. the other or just randomly bad/good ones in the mix? Seems really odd if within a 12pack there are blend of good/bad beers. If they are identified from the seperate 12 packs, then that could be several factors (heat, handling, age, quality control etc).

I tried Shlitz about a year or 2 ago, and thought they were pretty decent. There are several other AALs I prefer more, but its decent.

Not sure how old "old as hell" is, but Schlitz was the #2 brewer in the US up until 1976, with a barrelage of 24M bbl., of which around 2/3 was Schlitz Beer (their popular-priced Old Milwaukee was also a huge seller).

They operated a large (3M bbl.) brewery in Los Angeles.

The year before being purchased by Stroh in 1982, Schlitz Beer was selling at a rate of around +6 million barrels a year- easily still among the Top Ten beers in the US.

Since the 1970s, Schlitz Beer's recipe changes have been pretty well-documented - from the early/mid-'70s with changes to the brewing process and ingredients, including some additives that didn't well work together, to being reformulated in the late '70s when Schlitz hired an ex-AB brewmaster, Frank Sellinger, as CEO in a failed effort to save the company.

After that, Stroh turned it into an economy brand (likely also changing the recipe) until Pabst - which bought the brand along with many others when Stroh left the business in '99 - tried to revive it around a decade ago now, based on some ex-brewmasters' "remembrances" of the 1960's era recipe, under the "Schlitz Gusto" branding.

IIRC, the hops (Cascades, Willimatte - among others?) Pabst used for the "Gusto/1960s recipe" didn't exist in the 1960s... Hard to say now, tho', since Pabst's website for Schlitz currently looks like this:

I bought a case of Schlitz 1960s formula beer a number of years ago and below is a post in I made in 2013 about that beer. The beer was in bottles and on the label it stated; “1960s Formula”.

“Patrik, There is a ‘regular’ Schlitz beer and a totally separate beer that is labeled as “1960’s formula”. If you go to the Schlitz website there is no longer any mention of the beer labeled “1960’s formula”: www.schlitzgusto.com

Interestingly in the History & Advertising tab they still list:

“2007: The ‘Classic 60’s Formula’, the one that made Schlitz the most popular beer in the country in the 1950s and 1960s, is back.

“2008: The ‘Classic 60’s Formula’ of Schlitz, in traditional brown glass bottles, returns to its birthplace, Milwaukee, Wisconsin.”

Below is something I posted previously:

I bought a case of Schlitz 1960’s formula beer last summer and I was pleasantly surprised!

First off, the case cost less than $20.00 including tax. As I paid for the beer I thought to myself: I can’t remember the last time I paid less than 20 bucks for a case of beer.

Now, Schlitz 1960’s formula beer is not ‘earth shattering’ but it is indeed more flavorful than a typical BMC beer. They utilize a bit more hops (bittering and flavor/aroma) then present day BMC beers so it has more hop presence. They still use adjuncts in this beer (corn) but at a lower level; they use 30% adjunct in making this beer.

What they were going for in making this beer is just as the label say: 1960’s formula. This means a bit more hops and less adjuncts then present day beers. I thought this was a very tasty and pleasant beer given that it is an American Adjunct Lager.”

    Cheers!
