According to The Oregonian, Alameda Brewhouse will close on November 3, and the production brewery will close at some point afterward: Alameda Brewhouse Closing Doors in NE Portland The Alameda Facebook page confirms it: "After 22 years, with an extremely heavy heart, we close Alameda Brewhouse. Please join us in showing our amazing staff a lot of love, celebrating the legacy we’ve forged, enjoying the beers we’ve made, and sharing the stories that we can remember. November 3rd is our last day, beer specials, special beers, special people, don’t miss out."
Too bad. Never like hearing this sort of thing, especially for a business that seems so well established. The way the article was written, though, leads to conjuncture and supposition, of which I have none, but is going to happen. I will say one thing though; the owner must have been a good guy if folks kept working for him for 15+ years. Raising a glass to all the staff right now.
Curious about the "legal reasons" bit. It's always sad when the older breweries disappear. They were a great fit in that strip on Fremont.
Based on the tone of the article, it doesn't sound as if this was volitional on the part of the owner (given that apparently he was as devastated by this sudden turn of events as his employees were). While I've never been a big fan of their beers or the location (even when I lived no more than a mile away), I always figured the owner must have been doing something right, given their longevity (in an area that has become increasingly upscale and trendy). Very sorry to hear about this.
When I first moved back to PDX in 2006, I lived two blocks away and would frequently stop in for a pint or two, and some food. Was always a great spot, and super friendly staff. While (most of) the beers weren't outstanding, they were all solid. I've very fond memories of the place, and am sad to see it go.
Some of my favorite wings in Portland. Last 5 years it seemed a bit disorganized and they didn’t maximize the space they had or get creative with their beer. Sad to see it go
Sad to see them go. Agreed with most of what has been said, and it always sucks to see an institution leave the city. Will need to stop by before they close to pay my respects.
